Val, I will take your suggestion of making a sample of that one chart and work it out. I have seen this thing before on other sweaters but not in a pattern/chart ever.
Rho, actually graphs get easier as you work on them. In all my years knitting I've avoided them save for small ones (we are talking itty bitty here) that could not be avoided. They were all that was there.
By reading in the KR about ways to keep your eyes from dancing around like crazy from one line to another, or flat out forgetting from one day to another - thank heaven for that little quilter's tape trick!- this one is going along fine. Except for that strange tiny line Above.
