K, thanks for your question. To answer you, when I saw Poko Ono laying her eggs back in May or so, I didn't expect them to hatch, because for years they haven't been fertile. This year there were four babies that we know of.
So, we started looking for babies when DH found the first one. You find one, and then you go looking for the others.
When the sun first starts warming up the air, they get active and it's a matter of searching for them sunning themselves. That was last time, ten years ago. This time it was a miracle any were found before they perished, like the one our neighbor found, or were eaten by ravens or other birds, raccoons, or skunks. They all eat baby tortoises.
Sue, Thanks for looking in at the Tortoise tots. You are right, they are the cutest little things. Tiny and perfect. We feel lucky to have these three, but now we will dig up the nests when she lays them. There are too many tortoises looking for foster homes as it is.
How on earth did you ever find those tiny little things in the big Out Of Doors?
ReplyDeleteBoo Miss Zippi! What a cute baby!
