Rockhounds and what they do.....

This is our rock hounding buddy going through the Amygdules and Quartz roses we collected that day and cutting them in half with a little saw that he packs along. We collected a lot of them because there are billions of them all over the cow fields below Locomotive Mountain in Southern Arizona on the Lazy B Ranch. This picture was taken at the same camp ground in which we saw hundreds of Yellow Headed Blackbird. They were roosting in the reeds of the small lake.

And, I am moving my blog reading lists over slowly to another page. Details soon. This was something I had been working on before but now that I'm up half the night, it's a nice quiet thing to occupy the long, dark hours.

  1. The yellow headed blackbirds are so beautiful. I haven't seen one for so long. I was in Arizona last month but I didn't get to see any. The red winged blackbird is the one that lives in northern Ohio; their song is the soundtrack of my childhood but they are not as pretty.

  2. Hi, Ellen. Yellow winged blackbirds are spectacular. So beautiful. If you get back to Arizona in the winter, look for them near Safford, near the mountain massive to the east at a lake preserve.

We have red winged blackbirds in the fields here, and there are flocks of them in the mixed flocks out in the Imperial valley near all the cattle pens. We were told for years that you could see the yellow winged ones out there as well but we never found them. Believe me, it was like Christmas finding so many in the farmlands of southern Arizona.

I'll put a picture up if I can find one that looks nice on a monitor. The ones I put up in Ravelry are about as clear as the weather allowed, but I've found the original photos recently.

  3. Please forgive me, I'm not quite out of the quick sand with my brain fog and mire.

    Yellow headed blackbirds..

Duh! I put a picture up of them. It's a nice size when you go to flickr and click on the "All Sizes" tool.
