vaguely knitting related-straight needles and a gift

The two tiny straights sets ( 0n the left) are 0s and 1s, sent by a sweet friend in KR. Thank you M!

These littlest needles are hard to find nowadays, and are perfect for making small lace. I wish that the one on the end, a 000, would have been in stainless steel because the lace that H's mother was making on it got rust marks. That's bobbin lacemaking thread on that needle. FRAN suggested something to get the rust out, and I'll try it now that it's in front of my face again! Life is a meander for the likes of me. Wander here, there, sleep, read, knit, rinse, repeat.

I'm working on the Drops Aran sweater and it's very pleasant now. When the row count is to 30, I'll post a picture. I'm knitting row 26 right now and can really see the advantages of using a chart, yay, and in knitting a sweater in the round. Wow, what a difference it makes!

That's about all for today. Just finished reading a Cadfael mystery called The Holy Thief, and now I am going to go start a new birding mystery called The Audubon Quartet by Ray Sipherd. I know nothing about this book other than it's bird related, and of course since I'm allergic to birds it stands to reason I'm also bird crazy. Love the birds. DH picked this up at the book sale. I never go there anymore because otherwise we would be there all day, and come home with far too many.

  1. For those very skinny knitting needles:
How about a set of turkey skewers? Or bamboo skewers? You could make a point on the other end with a bit of fine sandpaper or an old emery board.

  2. Pogonip, I've heard tell you can make them from bamboo skewers but the quality of the skewers I have in the kitchen doesn't match what is in the bamboo needles from Clover or Crystal Palace.

I'm thinking that maybe their needles are soaked in resin after they are made, or at least something like it to assure that amazing smoothness.

The little "0" needles in the picture are so much thinner, too, that it would take a lot of sanding on a skewer to get it down to "0" size.

I have aluminum "00" dpns from Susan Bates that came in a large set of "00" to "3" small dpns but haven't tried to make anything on them other than the beginning of round mats.

Oh! And there are stainless steel dpns up to "0000" (maybe higher) available off the web. Those make the cutest tiny socks you can imagine.

Now for something completely different. Have you seen the Scientic American article on the Evolution of Cats? I thought of you and Lucy Locket when I read it. My DD sent it. I think she is maybe tempting me to get a cat. I'd like a ragdoll, sometimes. Or a Maine Coon Cat. You know, the ones more like dogs. lol.. just joking.

  3. I don't think I've seen the article. But I might have - can you hum a few bars..... Not such a good memory, but then I never did have a good one. So it can't be age or Al Zeimer's.
