The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency
This is a whole series of books and should be read in order. I'm pinching myself at having stumbled across them while looking for a non fiction book at Alibris. I really love this writer! The books are very well written, and they are something that won't make your hair stand on end so badly that you can't read them after dark! You will love the No.1 Lady detective, Mma Precious Ramotswe. She's a very sympathetic character, and so intuitive and clever, and KIND!
The series is written by Alexander McCall Smith, who is a professor of Medical Law at Edinburgh University in the UK. He was born in the part of Africa that is now Zimbabwe, and he also taught the Law at the University of Botswana, where the books are set. He has an amazing ear for cadence in a language and translates it very well to his stories.
I think you will like these books very much if you want something well written, engaging in the character and plot developments, and descriptive of the beauty of Africa; they are definitely worth the time to read.

What a shame I didn't tell you about them years ago when I first found them - so remiss of me! Enjoy!! Cx
ReplyDeleteHBO had a series based on this a bit ago - you can probably rent or Netflix it. Well worth a peek.
ReplyDeleteok you sold me...that is one (of many) that I have not tried! I will take a look at my local used book store ;)

PJ they are so much fun to read. I hope you can find the books. Don't forget to look for them on line if the LBS don't have them.
I've been getting mine through two library systems.
Well, PJ, it finally popped up! Imagine that....

ReplyDeleteChris, well, I'm glad in a way that you didn't. hehe. Now I can escape to Africa with a wonderful lady and her adventures. And thank you! I am enjoying this very much.
ReplyDeleteEllen, I saw that after finding the books, there was a blurb about a series on the back of one of the series. I looked it up and the woman you plays the lead just didn't fit my mental image of her. That hat, for instance! I imagined her in an elegant head wrap.
I got three books today to read. This gives me the feeling of being tremendously wealthy! I love public libraries! Thank you, Mr. Carnegie!
Naughty little word.. escape.
