Saturday 9: Big Girls Don't Cry (1962) Boy did I ever mess this one up!

Saturday 9: Big Girls Don't Cry (1962)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) When is the last time you shed a tear?

Last night- I'm a big cry baby for melodramas. Plus, I even shed tears when I'm laughing.

2) Lyricist/producer Bob Crewe recalled he got the idea for this song while watching a movie on TV. "Big girls don't cry" was a line from the 1956 film Slightly Scarlet. Give us a quote from another movie.

"Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya; you killed my father... prepare to die."  That's from "Princess Bride".  I love that movie!

3) This inspiration came to Bob during the late night/early morning hours. What time of day are you most productive?

Apparently when I am asleep.

4) Bob wrote another song for the Four Seasons, "Silence Is Golden." The band was not happy with their recording and never released it as a single. Three years later, The Tremeloes had an international Top 10 hit with "Silence Is Golden." Tell us about a decision you wish you could do over.

But that would be telling!  Anyway, it would be staying in this house I am in now.

If I'd have known we were going to be here for the rest of our lives, I would have kept on looking.

It turned out that it's only three blocks from the city I really wanted to live in, to keep the two older girls in the same school district.

I was 6 months preggers, but we couldn't stay where we were.  My little girl, allergic to horses, could hardly breathe and the "neighbor" was keeping a horse and foal in her postage stamp back yard.  We had to move.

5) Before he got his big break, Four Seasons lead singer Frankie Valli worked as barber. Do you have a hair care appointment scheduled?
I am almost 84 and the last time I had a hair appointment was when I was in my 20's.  I've always cut my own hair from that time forward.  My hair is "stealth curly", and no one else can cut it.  If I don't pull it back and tame it, there is no living with it.

This is the straight version of it.

Lordie!  was I really ever this young?

Me at 83

6) Oscar-winning actor Joe Pesci has a connection to the band. He was a young chum of Four Seasons founding member Tommy DeVito. By the time DeVito left the group and found himself overwhelmed by gambling debts, Pesci was a star. He helped his friend out, making Tommy his personal assistant and getting him cameo roles in films. Tell us about someone who has been there for you in tough times.  My friend Vicky.  She took me in when my drunken paternal unit threw me out of the house. Vicky helped me get "a job that paid the rent" and put me up at her three gal apartment until I could find my own place, which happened really quickly because everyone helped me.  Friends have been the best People in this life.....friends, my hubby, and my girls.

7) The Four Seasons disbanded in 1977 after 17 years together. The original bandmates reunited onstage 1990 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It was an important night for them professionally and personally, too, as it gave the old friends a chance to reconnect and mend fences. Is there anyone from your past you wish you could reach out to?
My Mother. She had done her best for me, in life, but she was married to our father, who was a rotten man.  My sibs and I all wished that she had lived, and that he had finally succumbed to his vices. I would have sought her, in main part, because she was so easy to talk to and to love.

8) Another hit song from 1962 was "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." Tony Bennett compares San Francisco to Rome, Paris and Manhattan. Have you visited any of those four cities? I've only been to Frisco.  It's got to be one of the ten greatest cities in the U.S. if not the world.

9) Random question – You're home all alone. Do you close the door when you use the bathroom? Doesn't everyone? lol
I guess it would be guys who don't.  Hubby does it sometimes and I know my little brother didn't but likely his wife had a stab at curbing that little male tendency.

Thanks Sam, for another great Saturday Nine Meme!

  1. I love your hair! It's so wild and free. Do you think it's a reflection of your soul?
