Trish, the plant is called a bottlebrush, it's from Australia I think. I have one and so did my mother. The wall behind the plant was roughish wood painted flat white, the wall of her breakfast room. It was perfect, it turns out, for the fill light in that picture.
What an odd but beautiful plant! The foto with the hummingbird is superb!
