Cleaning out the Attic At Grandma's...

I've been de-stashing some sewing things, the patterns especially. My sewing patterns stretch back into the 40's -ones that Mother had - and a lot of mine from the 50's on up. Some, like these shown, are very interesting. Either it's historical or hysterical. You decide. If there are others that may bring a smile or two, I'll post them as we go along. Still looking for beauty that does not involve more boring clouds over the back forty.

Today I'm putting fingers on a glove and reading more in my economic tome. This is very painful but necessary to understand what went so terribly wrong. Since it's been years since I read it, I need to go back and read Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations". It's my oldest hobby, Economics.

The sun is shining, the containers in the garden need to be watered. Since that can wait another day, I'll just declare this a "Knitting Day"!

  1. Wow! What went wrong...did you see/hear Bill Moyers Journal this week? He had an interview with Bogle, a big investment guru with Vangard Group, and he really had some blunt things to say! I listened to it twice, it was sooo darn good. Here's a link for the pod cast. I think Mr. Adams would approve.

The previous week had a bit about Rachel Carson. Definately worth a listen.

Old patterns..nostalgia, laughter, pathos. Keep putting them up!

  2. Meribeth, Thanks for the podcast. I listened to it.

Lack of accountability of corporations is what went very wrong so long ago; the book I'm reading was written in 1994. This man,Bogle, after making lots of money on this lack of accountability in finance, is now swinging around. That's very good, maybe it will now spur others to come forward and do something with all the wealth they've accrued while feeding at the trough.

Bogle is saying nothing that wasn't said by Korten over 14 years ago. Bogle's acceptance of greed as having a role in Capitalism, is the worst side of capitalism. Free Enterprise is a thing of beauty when it is involved in Community. Divorced from community, you get what we now have, execessive Money loving greed. He, as an economist, MUST have read Korten's book, and maybe he should read it again.

  3. And, Yes, Adam Smith would be pleased. He was right about what would happen, and it's high time that we turn this thing around before the Earth (land) and Community(artisans and Labor)collapse because of it.

  4. You must not be an economic major or know much about it to rely on Adam Smith's book for anything but toilet paper!

  5. Of course I'm not an economic major, it's a hobby. And Adam Smith set the stage for the development of a middle class. How you think that's worthless is beyond me to know.
