Way back in the 1960s, Odetta would come to Miami to play in the Gaslight South, next door to the pub where I tended bar part-time. She and her band came over after sets, and she would sit and chat with us. A friend of mine was "with" her guitarist for several years. She was such a fine, down-to-earth person and I treasure those memories.

Odetta was born to sing and play her guitar. I'll miss her sweetness and the way that she held on to that through thick and thin.
