Fuzzarelly, being a non combatant, (I is kidding!)wishes to know how the baby torts are getting along on the lately renamed Lazy T Ranch. And I'm sure that BabyLuann, in another part of the North American Continent, also wishes the same.
Milagro on the scales. She's the biggest and still has that little bat on the back of her shell along the edge.
Milagro, the largest one is about the size of mayonnaise jar lid. Dusty is just a hair smaller than she is, and little Mosquito, who was one of the last hatched and stayed "in the Wild" longer is still a lot smaller than they are. In this picture you can see those shiny whitish lines around the growth plates. This shows that all the critters have grown quite a bit this summer. There is a light area actually ON the plates that is early summer growth.
Knitting: I am being haunted by that other sock, so it's time to get the darn thing cast on and knit, especially important because I have been battling complacency as the days of October slip away under the wire.
I need to do more of what Elly the Elephant is doing.... Picture follows....above
PS: The big torts are all eating well, and staying pretty cool under the small deck.
Our 11 year male is catching heck from his father, and a lot of head bobbing is going on in the lower 40. The matriarch of the herd, Poko Ono, is doing well, and if she laid a nest we haven't found it.
All the Torts large and small eat bok choy. The big ones also eat roses, elm sprouts, and cactus pads, nearly every day, and sometime fruit bits we save them.
We eat only organic farmer's market fruits and vegetables so, the torts will all likely outlive us. We are thinking about leaving something in our wills for their sakes. BUT, if we find that nest, we will dig it up!
Thanks for the tortie news. I didn't know about the white growth lines.
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure, Fuzzarelly. :o)
ReplyDeleteThis growth lines between the plates are are sort of like fault lines that spread apart; you can see the newly formed keratin in it's whitish hue. It darkens over time, and turns sort of gray as the torts age. Lucky is in the stages of changing his colors, and he's actually 13 years old, not 11 as I said before. They are really interesting little critters, and a pet that normally outlives it's care giver. ;o)
