I just found this link at Mountain News.com about the death, and the life of, Anatoli Boukreev.
If you just should happened to have read the book, Into Thin Air, by Jon Krakauer, you will want to know more about what really was happening on that climb in May of 1996 .
If you love mountaineering, "The Climb", co-authored by Anatoli Boukreev and G. Weston DeWalt, is a "must read" book.
Sometimes I knit and sometimes I sit and read, mostly non fiction (edit) and mostly about things very dear to my heart, like Mountains and the people brave enough to climb them.
I didn't read Into Thin Air, several years ago. DH warned me off it. Now I'm glad that he did. It's better to have your heart broken by something nearer the truth, than by a lot of sensationalized blame game puff addering.
I will say no more but leave you with this little bit from another source.. I really should not post late at night. Duh!
Stephanie Losee: Return to Thin Air Article
Yes! I always feel so odd, but I always demand that if someone has read into thin air that they have to read the other! And worse, I think Boukreev died before his book was published.
ReplyDeleteHaving said all that, I still can't believe that those people survived.
The Mountains always have the upper hand, do they not? And I agree, both books need to be read, good for you to demand!
ReplyDeleteIt breaks the heart that this befell him, to not see his vindication. He was a wonderful man.
And yes, it's still a sort of miracle of good fortune that so many survived that climb of Everest on that terrible stormy day. I will always wonder what the star was that was visible to both the Sherpas and the member of Mountain Madness's team.
Rest in Peace, Toli.
