At this time of year, I really want to be way, WAY out there in the Southern Arizona Desert, or even the BLM lands, prospecting for agates, tiny garnets that you find around ant hills, or some other great, old stuff.
I want to be out there, under that great big sky, where it's very quiet- out there where when the stars come out at night you can actually see by their light.
Starlight, all by itself, can make a soft glow on the sand that you can see by to walk along quietly, communing with the unbelievably immense Universe.
garnets are pretty common in the NYCity granite (manhattan is schist, the bronx is gneiss--the garnets are found in the gneiss
ReplyDeleteLater this year, i plan to make some granite (shade of grey) sock (in granite stitch (natch!) and to have scattered veins of garnets (little red beads.
If you can get to the desert, and find what you want--knit it! if you can't find the right yarn--paint some your self.. add jewels and gemstones, (i love agate) and keep the treasure, it not near to your heart, close to you.
Hi Helen, A it is so nice to know the geology of New York, which is very complex, as is the geology of California. We did study some of your rocks, brought back to us by our professors. Garnet crystallizes out of the Gneiss when that mass goes through metamorphism.
ReplyDeleteOh! What a great idea to plan some socks around the desert vistas. The glorious sunsets and the the red rocks of Moab. ya.. :o) love it! You have inspired me, thank you!
We were sort of mean to the little ants, a species that is larger than the sugar ants we see in our houses, but still very small. We would take away their tiny garnets even when they were diligently carrying them to the hill. I would grip their treasure in my soft tipped tweezers and pick the little fellow off his feet.
After awhile of struggle the little sentient being would let go and run off to another place to get another garnet. They have a reason for wanting garnets and i think it has to do with heat. Not sure.
Anyway, I gave it up after a bit, and just went back to sifting through the garnet sand to get my own garnets.
I think the biggest bits were less than an 1/16th of an inch in diameter. That's heavy going for a little black ant!
