This is a bulletin from from Audubon California:
ESA protections should be upheld for CA Gnatcatcher
ESA protections should be upheld for CA Gnatcatcher
Audubon California is opposing the latest attempt by southern California developers to remove the California Gnatcatcher from protection under the Endangered Species Act. The delisting petition relies on a new study claiming the California Gnatcatcher is not a genetically unique subspecies, but a number of avian experts contend that this study is based on inadequate data and that the petition should be rejected by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. We are keeping a close eye on the developing situation."
My personal notes:
These little birds have gotten increasingly scarce since the whole area around the lake was developed for reasons other than birds. This occurred sometime in the 80's or 90's, I've lost track of just when it happened. Meadowlarks, as well as Gnatcatchers, are now getting close to numbers that will be below their ability to keep a steady population, and Meadowlark song was just all over the lands where there is now a huge parking lot. They needed that Meadow and no one was able to stick up for them.
Let's start standing up to developers who don't have anything else on their minds than to develop for MONEY, and to hell with everything else that stands in their way!
