When: Five Minute Friday; two Friday5 posts.

Kate's Blog, where she explains the rules for this fun meme, is under the button in the side bar, and I hope you will join us.

When:

Your whole life you are waiting for When.  If you could learn early enough that waiting for when is a thief of Time, you wouldn't do it.  but here we all are, in 21st century America, still being ruled by when.  We don't usually even HEAR about living in the moment practically from the moment we stop living in it.  As little children we are very much in the moment.  When we are old enough
to go to school at the age of five we are already living in the When of existence.  What would our society be like if we never stepped out of the moment and into the When?  We'd actually live longer.  The When is where we are fitted with a collar that never gets taken off.  It rules everything we do and I mean literally everything we do.  How could this happen.  We learn to live by the hands on a clock face.  And the older we get the more so this is.  It's only the old people and a few special beings that are not living according to the hands of a clock.  Take a vacation?  you are wedged into a block of time.  Living off any grid is the only way to escape this fate.  END

Friday 5 For February 13: Gung Hee Fat Choy:

Hello, and welcome to this week’s Friday 5! Please copy these questions to your webspace. Answer the questions there; then leave a comment below so we’ll all know where to check out your responses. Please don’t forget to link us from your website!

Where I come from, Chinese New Year is a big deal (although it’s not really part of my inherited culture, and I usually pay it little attention), and the festivities begin tonight. Here are five questions inspired by the occasion.

1. What’s your experience with firecrackers and sparklers?
Fire crackers are dangerous, and they literally scare birds to death.  Sparklers are my favorite firework because they look so much like live snow flakes, or at least they used to.

2. What was the occasion the last time you gave someone money as a gift?
Christmas

3. What’s the reddest thing you own?
Some silk roses that I just got to make a Valentine's day decoration.

4. What animal represents you in the Chinese zodiac, and what qualities do you have in common with it? (this is just for fun; please don’t take it seriously)
My Chinese Zodiac animal is the Horse.  I once was a very swift barefoot runner.  Also, I love dogs which are very compatible with Horses.  I can't think of anything more fun than being able to run with the herd or the pack.
5. What’s your favorite order in a Chinese restaurant?
I like pan fried Brown Rice noodles with vegetables, and chicken with snow peas.

Thanks for participating, and happy new year!

Friday 5 for February 6: Idiomatic Transmission.

Hello, and welcome to this week’s Friday 5! Please copy these questions to your webspace. Answer the questions there; then leave a comment below so we’ll all know where to check out your responses. Please don’t forget to link us from your website!

1. What’s something in your life that’s on the fritz?
An old Industrial Sewing Machine.  I need it up and running.

2. What have you recently handled with kid gloves?
Literally, my right hand and thumb.  And the left bicep.
Improper technique in side curls.. months ago.

3. On what task do you continue to plug away?
Organizing all my craft and sewing things.  Cleaning out the deadwood so I can finish some quilts..

4. This past week, what’s something you’ve sailed through?
I guess the crosswords.

I still haven't had time to buy and plant the buddleias.
I'm sad about it, but what can you do?

5. What have you had to hold your horses on, and what’s the reason?
The buddleias.  I'm hoping to get them this weekend; we'll see.  There are dwarf buddleias, so maybe we can find some of them.  They'd be easier to handle, and be just as attractive to the hummers and the butterflies.  The Little Painted Ladies are going to migrate soon.

Have a great weekend.

  1. It is so true that we have learned to live in the 'when'. My mom used to tell me when I was young that someday I would be sorry that I was wishing my life away. Can't wait to be 18. Can't wait to be 21. Can't wait for kids. Can't wait for kids to leave home........you get the idea. And she was right. Now I want all that time back again.

  2. Me, too, Paula. Let's meet back at your place in the present moment. We've earned the right! And, no matter what the wheels of American Industry have to say, the present is the BEST gift we can give or have. ;-)

  3. I am a Rabbit in the Chinese zodiac. It seems to fit.

I appreciated your essay on living in the "when." Very insightful.

    1. Hi Country Dew, Rabbits are really one of the best of the zodiac animals. They are gregarious and gentle yes, like you.

Thank you for the nice comment on "When". I'm now so in the moment that I'm recovering from feelings of uselessness brought on by a year of upset plans and scrambling to keep an even keel.
