Friday 5 for May 13: How Did You Learn That?

Hello, and welcome to this week’s Friday 5!  Please copy these questions to your webspace.  Answer the questions there; then leave a comment below so we’ll all know where to check out your responses.  Please don’t forget to link us from your website!

How did you learn to throw a ball?
I learned by throwing rocks.  We lived on two and half acres of river bottom land, flood plain if you will, and we learned by throwing rocks.  Later, we threw balls at school.

How did you learn to drive?
I learned to drive on the San Gabriel River bottom.  There were all sorts of roads, sandy dirt, in the river because there wasn't much water most of the time.  I learned to handle a truck on those roads.

How did you learn to swim?
I learned to swim, on top of the water, in a pool in the desert.  I just took off across it one night and swam across the surface.  Up to that time I swam underwater and just came up for air once in awhile.  Not real swimming, that.

What is the most recent thing you learned how to do from an online tutorial?
How to give a warm oil lymphatic leg massage.

How did you learn most of your social etiquette?
From my mother and maternal grandfather, who taught his four daughter's the finer points of English manners from his own upbringing as a son of wealthy Canadians.  Grandfather had beautiful English manners, and so did my mother.  My grandfather had the most gorgeous handwriting as well.  I have some letters of his that he wrote to my mother.

Thanks for participating, and have a lovely weekend!

Happy Weekend to all the Friday5ers.  And to our host also.

  1. I often wonder if kids today learn about good manners and etiquette.

  2. Some do. I know our girls did. I've met very polite children in this long life, and also ones who must have had no good examples in their lives at all! Parents have lots less time to just have a family life and teach by example, and that is sad.

  3. I teach manners to my students. I tell them that good manners will take them far!

  4. I thought about teachers. I thought about the good ones who change the lives of their students in amazing ways. Teachers have a powerful affect on our future. You are absolutely one of my favorite people.
