Thursday Thirteen: 13 Vegetables/fruits I like to eat

The first item is something Mr. Z found out.

And, U.C. Berkeley's webpage is a treasure trove of  plant facts.

1. Broccoli has a compound in it that combats certain RNA strands which help cancers to multiply.

2. Artichokes support the liver, and help keep it healthy. I take a daily supplement of artichoke extract suggested by my doctor.  We also buy the artichokes in season.  Yum!

3. Spinach was first grown as a crop, in Iran 4000 years ago.

4. Heirloom tomatoes are slightly sweet.  Yum!

5. Rutabagas started out as a cross between a cabbage and a turnip. I like them sliced and fried like potatoes.

6. Potatoes boast about 4000 different varieties.

7. Carrots  Are healthy and so tasty.  And they originated in Persia, which is now Iran.

8. Here's the skinny on Chocolate, a bean which is also healthy, as  U.C. Berkeley explains...

9. Nuts. I'm so glad to not be allergic to this lovely food.
From HERE.
There is some really good nutritional info there.

10.  Kale, especially in stir-fry and salads.  I want to try it in green drinks, too.

11. Brown Rice.  Well, white rice, too.  The short sticky and also long grain. Does that count as 2?
Yummy Stuff!

12.  Soy Bean curd.  It's so delicious.

13. Corn on the cob, cooked on the grill.

Happy Thursday 13, Everyone!

  2. I thought I didn't like kale, but since I found the Sweet Kale salad, I've been eating kale 2-3 times a week.

  3. I have never tried rutabaga! It makes me think of a "Charmed" episode where Piper and Leo were calling their forbidden wedding a "rutabaga" for a code. LOL! I just discovered some multicolored carrot varieties. They were really good!

    1. I may just have to watch that show. Thanks for the tip.
More interesting varieties of root veggies are coming into our markets here. I credit the vegans for their popular support of farmer's markets.

  4. Kale is the only leafy green (besides lettuce) that my husband will eat. I love turnip greens and collard greens but he won't touch them. Very interesting post. (P.S. Lately when I post here, I get a mail return from harpy something or another that says mail undelivered. I don't know if something is wrong with your blog or what. We'll see if it happens again this time.)

    1. Kale is lovely stuff. But the other greens are very good for your body, too. I've eaten the spring weeds for decades because they are in my organic backyard.

Did it happen again? Harpy sounds ominous. I'm sorry that's happening.
I took the poliblog private because of the "storm clouds" brewing. The goons have unleashed an army of international trolls. Let's face it, they are ruthless and deep pocketed.

    2. Yes, it did. It wasn't harpy, my mistake. It was this: Your message wasn't delivered to haggymama_wolfie@sbcglobal.net because the address couldn't be found. Check for typos or unnecessary spaces and try again.

    3. For some reason that other email didn't work right. So I changed the email addy. The new one does. I heard from a friend that tonight we bombed Syria. I'm so heart sick.

  5. Lately my favorite is brussel sprouts, but they don;t grow here. We do
have a volunteer bumper crop of turnip greens.

Turnip greens are some of my favorite greens. I love to stir fry them with other things.

    1. I like the flavor of it when it's grilled. It's great when it's grilled in the husk, too, but has a different flavor.

Chocolate is a food group, right? heehee
