Saturday9: The Tide is High... Blondie

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: The Tide Is High (1980)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

I love this group, and their song, "Heart of Glass" is one of my all time favorite songs. When I hear it, I just have to dance.

1) This song was originally performed in 1966 by a Jamaican band called The Paragons. Jamaica is the most popular vacation destination in the Caribbean. What's your ideal vacation? (Relaxing on the beach, sightseeing in a new city, skiing the slopes, spending time with family, etc.)  I'd like to spend a week (or six) with my daughters and two honorary sons.

2) In this song, Debbie Harry sings that she's not the kind of girl who gives up easily. How about you? Do you hang on stubbornly? Or do you know when to say "when?"
I'm very tenacious.  I'm starting to read a lot of new info on the assassination of President Kennedy, for one thing. I've got an insatiable desire to "know the truth".  The past informs the future, and I'm tired of all the black ops, domestic espionage, and other invasions of the Americans' Constitutional Rights.

3) Blondie is a group that took it's name from the lead singer's most identifiable characteristic, her hair. If your band was named after your hair, what would it be called?
Gee, It would probably be, "The GrayBuns" if it wasn't taken.

4) Before her career as a singer took off, Debbie supported herself as a waitress. She even served drinks while wearing bunny ears and tail at The Playboy Club. Have you ever worked in food service?
Yes, at a Dairy Queen.  I bought my dreadnought guitar with some of my earnings.

5) Debbie points to David Bowie as a major influence on her music and career. What's your favorite Bowie song?
Space Oddity, hands down... always was and always will be....

6) In 1980, when this song was popular, the best selling issue of Rolling Stone featured Robert Redford on the cover. Who is your all-time favorite actor?
I've answered this before and this answer will be different nearly every time as my brain shifts to one side or other of some invisible divide.  However, James Garner is the one coming up to the top at the moment.

7) In 1980, Ted Turner revolutionized how we watch TV when he introduced CNN. Do you have any subscriptions services in addition to cable -- like Hulu, Amazon Prime or Netflix?
We have no cable other than basic. ← UGH!  We watch YouTube, A-prime, and Netflix.

8) John Lennon was murdered in 1980. Today there's a specially landscaped section of Central Park called Strawberry Fields in his honor. If you had a day to spend in New York, what would you want to see?
I'd want to see the Empire State building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Carnegie Hall, MOMA, and the great and beautiful Met!

9) We're going shopping! Which do you need to add to your wardrobe: underwear, shoes or a swimsuit?
I'll buy some new shoes for these old feet. They are sore!   And, I'll buy some more Tunic tops.  I love the things.

  1. This song was one of my late husband's favorites. We both worked for an inventory service in the 1980's. He loved it when the song came on the store intercom as we all picked up the pace. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!!

    1. Awww.. that is so sweet a memory. Glad you took a trip down a sweeter side of Memory Lane.
      That song is a delight.

  2. I've read extensively about the JFK assassination my entire life and have fallen down many a rabbit hole. If I may save you from that, let me recommend a massive tome by Vincent Bugliosi -- Reclaiming History. It's heavy (literally and metaphorically) but exhaustive and very smart. Bugliosi approached it as a crime, as it always should have been treated but almost never was.

    1. I agree with your conclusion and would add this: they got away with murdering a president, I reckon. And, it's emboldened them ever since. That tells you a lot about the culture in our shadowy government, doesn't it? I'm reading a book called, The Kill Zone: A Sniper Looks at Dealey Plaza. And I'm trying to find a copy of Bugliosi's book, too. *found one at the library, yay, DH!

Presently, I'm hating OverDrive and Amazon both. Amazon for losing a book, and OverDrive for it's stupid web page. I need to keep devices away from the zone between myself and the books I want! I also need to go take a cold shower.

  3. That book The Gal suggested sounds interesting! We usually watch every show we come across about the Kennedy assassination.
I change my mind about favorite actor/music/book all the time, too. How to choose just one.

    1. It's likely going to be easier to get a copy of that book but look to the Library of Congress to provide it!
Harrison Ford and Leonardo DiCaprio are also two of my favorites. And, yes, how can a person possibly pick just one?

  4. I went to NYC last summer for the first time and it was such a whirlwind trip--there is just so much to see and do that I feel like I didn't do anything! Although, the purpose for the trip was to see my friend on Broadway, which was fantastic!

    1. What fun to know someone who is in a Broadway production. I was going to say that I'd like to live in Georgia (darn word complete!) to be closer to New York, but that was last night. That poor governor.

  6. Wow, Zippi, we had many similar answers today. Same Bowie song. I love Blondie, too. I used to play Heart of Glass when I was in a Top 40 band. It had really boring guitar parts but I still liked the song.
