I really was going to post some flowers to off set this slight rant, but all the snaps came out fuzzy.
Anyway, someone took exception to a post about Adam Smith's book. The first one to find the comment made, besides the commentator themselves, will receive a dyed Reagan tail feather! It's an anonymous comment. They probably have Adam Smith confused with a Communist. And when you find the comment, you will know that it's a modern person because they have a modern convenience. Toilet paper. Yes, that's a clue!
Quite the contrary Anon. And, yours is an opinion like any other. You have a right to it. But, I'm wondering. What sort of world would you like? Would you like to continue in this world of insatiable greed we are living in now? Or maybe you really would like to have one balanced between Democratic Governmental controls - for the good of all the citizens (labor), heed of Environmental Imperatives and physical limits - for the good of the land (earth), and Money- Capital. Also, do you not think that Adam Smith's book is an early version of that?
I'll always love this quote from George Bernard Shaw - "If all economists were laid end to end, they would not reach a conclusion."
I'm now reading Tony Hillerman's newest book. It's a helluva lot more fun than reading Modern Economics. Especially odious, to me, are those who adhere to the Chicago School of Economics who have abandoned Keynes entirely. Bah! Bloody Tories!
The glove is so near to completion. As soon as it's finished I will start on Gretchen. I'm hoping that it goes quickly though it is a rather large shawl. There are some very beautiful patterns, like "Print of the Wave" from HeartStrings for after the Drop's Aran sweater is finished. Knitting is going very slowly. A quilt and a coat have to be finished before the end of the year.
DH went to the Octoberfest with a friend, and the whole thing was almost all commercial, they said. People selling time shares, imported cheap clothing and jewelry. With the booth price being over $600 it doesn't surprise me that this is so.
My brother is coming down for a couple days. He is always fun to be around, and he likes to go to the local antique shops with my sister. DH and I might tag along. Maybe I'll find that tiny Japanese teapot that I liked. Of all the things to collect in Quakeland, ceramics and glass are not advised!
Have a great time and I do have a few pictures from the game I used to play. Enjoy them. It was a beautiful game!
..found it...yes, modern person it is. You can tell by the tone of the post, "I don't agree with you, therefore you are wrong." The joys of living in a world where everything is black and white, they are always right, and it is perfectly OK for a very small group of people to own the vast majority of the country's worth...and to keep it that way without having to reinvest in that country.
ReplyDeleteKings and Queens, neo-monarchy, based on greed and not lineage. And I'll just bet, that when that which needs the said "toilet paper" hits the fan..the supporter of the Neo=Monarchy (aka facists) will be one of the loudest whiners.
Incredible art in that game! I went to it the other day and was impressed. I want to try it out, and maybe it won't die out on us. It is beautiful.
Have fun with your brother and sis! I went to a fiber festival this last weekend..really small. And we had a blast! I think I like it better than MDSW because it was a lot more unique, more imagination too. And I love the idea of supporting the smaller businesses and craftmen. And yes, I was bad. The Zoomie Hat failed. Having an enabler along dilutes the effects of the Hat. I was able to leave some breath taking silk roving (white and pale periwinkle heathered) and 2 pounds of BFL roving. Damn.
Hi Lella--
ReplyDeleteI admire your fortitude in working through all those economists. Are you familiar with Isbister's promises Not Kept. We use it in the intro-level course I teach every fall. I find it a helpful outline of a few kep economic perspectives applied to colonialism, nationalism, multinationism.
If you haven't read it and would like it let me know. I have a gazillion copies, since I 've been teaching it so long.
Sarah-Hope
Well, I thought it is just so late and I was too tired to do justice to either of your comments but I went ahead anyway!
ReplyDeleteMy Sis and Bro were here two days in a row and we ran around shopping antique shops and other fun things with DH. It was totally exhausting and now I'm too tired to sleep or to think!
Yes to the book, Sarah-Hope. And Thank you! I am very interested in reading it. I would love to have a copy of Isbister's book. It is one that has been quoted in and is in the bibliographies of books recently read. What has happened it so raw and unethical!
And yes, Meribeth, I thought that, too! "You don't agree with me, therefore you are wrong." It used to work better before Capital got so powerful. The last big victory for Capital Investors was in getting our government to stop regulation and to privatize. The first mistake government made was granting Corporations "personhood". Government fell in love with lavish gifts of re-election money, and forgot about trying to regulate for the common good. And now Capital surely don't have to worry about Labor. These unrestrained markets grow unstable at some point and we are reaching that point. Healthy markets respect their own institutional limits, and they stay healthy. We don't have a healthy market. We have a house of motley cards.
Anyway, thank you both for you comments. I'm sorry about another little midnight rant. I'll go try to sleep..
do you mean the single horizontal handle teapot with a little strainer inside?
ReplyDeleteDel, these are tiny commonware pots made for the American Market. I'll take a picture of the little one which waited a whole year of me to go back and buy it. It's really cute. It has a handle and a spout, just a tiny version of a bigger one.
ReplyDeleteMeribeth, it is a beautiful game, isn't it? I've been trying out URU and like it a lot, too, but it's nothing at all like Ryzom. Ryzom is a work of art with a capital A.
Wow it's time to get some sleep! Nighty night! Piccies tomorrow. We have a funeral to go to for a friend. Long time friend, nearly 40 years. Sometimes you meet angels? That was this man. Gentle and kind to a fault. And very Humble, too. He will be missed. More on all this later.. Take care friends! Love like there is no tomorrow!
