No one wants to see yarn doing this on a swift. It started doing that right away. I was not familiar with the tie offs and got into a heap of problems right away.
So, rambling on a few more twirls it was getting worse and worse, so I started another ball from an end that was tied inside the hank. That one was smoother rolling but the damage was done. Loops were hanging off all over the place and I was trying to pass an increasingly larger ball of yarn through every snag. Let's just say it was close to that time when you cut loose, which I did, and figured another strategy.
This lampshade saved the yarn. Whoever it was that suggested it in Knitter's Review a couple of years ago, THANK YOU! I'd send you a box of chocolates if I could remember who you were.
Now, this lovely ice colored yarn, the color of the arctic ocean froth in a storm, is in three balls and waiting to be spliced and knit into some socks. Probably they will be Spring Forward from Knitty, but I just might go ahead and make them into Jane's Hedgerows. I'm so happy not to be putting this yarn out for the birds, in little bitty pieces, for nest materials. It's a beautiful yarn. Thank you, Jeanine!
Keep the chocolates--I know your pain--i had a huge hank of hand painted cashmere on my swift for a full month (a cloth draped over it.. to protect if from dust and to keep me for being annoyed at the site of it.)
ReplyDeletetill i had a swift, i used a lamp shade just like yours--and made mention.. (but i am sure i'm not the only one)
my cashmere is still awaiting the right pattern (and a whole bunch of other UFO's become FO's)
Thanks, OfTroy. I'll guess I'll just eat a few and, "Here ya go"... *hands big chocolate box to another swift "event" sufferer* We are probably legion...
ReplyDeleteYum, that cashmere hand painted sounds sweet indeed. :)
I'm sooo glad that thing is over, and now, all that is left is to spit splice a couple of times..
Hee hee.... the Battle of the Swift! The lampshade is a great idea, I hadn't heard of it before...!
ReplyDeleteHiya Gryphon, thanks for your title, we could make a movie, a short of many people trying to keep yarn behaving while centrifugal force tries to fling it! It was in the Raverly that I learned of the way do what is called "Ghetto tool making" but this lampshade Ghetto Tool suggestion came for Kitter's Review. It was a lot of fun to save that yarn. I will give it the chance to be the pair of socks it was meant to be, Jane's Hedgerows!
ReplyDeleteI know there is a blog out there somewhere that has an entry about a Ghetto Sweater Blocker. It was amazing and fun to read. Ravelry Frugal Knitting group maybe, or the DIYS tools group. Hmmm? I'll have to go look for it again.
Right now I just want to eat a big spoon of blackberry jam and then go to bed. nighty night!
