A few weeks ago, I was in the middle of a Ceramics class, and got caught in a racist funfest. It started with black history month, and ended with "Kids used to be able to get jobs at a burger joint, now you go in and all you see in there are Mexican illegals.
Well here's an answer to that second stupid, and racist remark. The first one I still would like to find a way to hurt that person, but they do the firing. When I can, I'll get even. I still can't stand to go back there; maybe I'll go with my Ipod.
I know here in Detroit it's people who have been laid off, adults with families that are working the fast food jobs. My hub has been out of work for about 15 months. It's scary as hell.
ReplyDeleteone word- corporation (vs. independant fransise) wonder if KFC would have the same story?
ReplyDeleteMarj, and that IS scary as hell, and a long time.

It seemed to just keep getting bigger and finally entered another deeper ring of chaos. And what you say about the workers in fast food in your city agrees with the study which is nationwide. Thanks for commenting.
PJ, sorry this got a little long and wordy... Thanks for you comment as well.
But, yes, I agree that to a certain extent that's true, that the small company that incorporates and then offers franchises removes a layer of community fellow feeling.
However, I just watched the clip again, and the average wage of Burger King workers is below the poverty level wage by more than $3100. That is a chunk of change there. And Burger King franchisees were evidently not obeying labor law even before Goldman Sachs bought the company. There are union benefits, and then actual labor laws, and those are federally mandated. I don't know if KFC pays strict attention to the federal laws governing employee breaks and overtime work, but if they do, they are an exception among fast food places, sadly. It think this deserves a look in to see how other fast food companies do this.
I do know that one company, who sells car parts, which isn't an American company, and which doesn't give lunch or 15 mins breaks to employees that ARE federally mandated.
Stay tuned, I'm going to have a look see. Now you have made me really curious about it.
