Beautiful Balboa Park

There is a cactus garden near Florida Canyon in Balboa Park. This is a tremendous garden.

One of the facades of the restored 1915 World's Fair buildings along the prado. This is a must see part of our city.

The Botanical Garden Pavilion and what used to be the lily pond. I'm not sure the lilies will ever be re-planted but it was magnificent when they were there. There are still lots of gorgeous Koi floating around in it, dashing through the shadows and chasing each other.

  1. Why are there no lillies now? Did something happen to them or were they too much work (too expensive) to maintain?
We lived in California (Coronado, Imperial Beach and Chula Vista) when I was a child and I remember trips to Balboa Park. Beautiful place! Thankd for the reminding.

  2. Hi Kathleen. I'm really sorry it took so long to get back to tell you more.

I think the lilies are back now. The picture was taken two winters ago. There was some damage to the bottom of the pond over time, and the whole pool had to be drained and fixed. It had been leaking. I'll have to go check on it and see. My sister and I are going to go down on fair days this coming few months before Christmas and I'll try to see if the lilies are down there underwater. hehe

I agree with you, Balboa Park gorgeous. There are some changes coming for the Prado area involving parking. Laurel Street may be cordoned off and a pedestrian walk put in that whole central area where the Fine Arts Museum and the Mingei are. It is to be all pedestrian walk, with fountains etc.
