Saturday 9: She's a grand old Flag...

STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER!

Saturday 9: Stars and Stripes Forever by The Muppets

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

To play along in this fun meme, Go HERE.
Awww.... Come on over.  You know you want to.

Memorial Day is the federal holiday designated to honor American service people who died in battle. Though our song choice is humorous, we honor their sacrifice in our hearts.
Amen to that, Sam.

1) Memorial Day was introduced after the Civil War. War memorials, as well as the graves of veterans, are to be decorated with flags and flowers on this day to show our appreciation. Is there a war memorial in your neighborhood?
We have three that I know of.
Veterans Museum and Memorial Gardens in Balboa Park, that was built when the Naval Hospital was located into Florida Canyon.
There is War Memorial Auditorium far to the north end of Balboa Park that is the oldest memorial I know of.
And we have Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery  out on Point Loma with it's memorial

2) Andrew Johnson, our 17th President, was in office the first time Memorial Day (then called Decoration Day) was celebrated. Have you ever met one of our 45 Presidents?
No, but Nixon almost landed here one year.  I'm ever so glad that he didn't.

3) According to the AAA, 36 million Americans will hit the road this weekend and drive more than 50 miles. Will you be traveling far from home this weekend?
No plans to, but, as we all know, the best laid plans of Mice and Men are many times going to be scrambled.  I am going to be posting less, in a vain attempt to rid myself of swartz piles, etc, I'll be selling things.  So, I didn't kick the basket  ummm.. the bucket, if anyone worries.  Sis Face, this is for you. ;)

4) Memorial Day kicks off the summer season. What's your favorite picnic food?
I love to make, and to eat, my grandmother's potato salad.  Yum!

5) Have you packed away your winter clothes? Or is the weather still so changeable that you still may need something warm?
In California we don't have a lot of "winter" clothes.  But we wear puffy jackets after nightfall a lot of times.  You see, we need the sun in order to stay warm.  It's the Lizard in us.  I love me my fleeces!

6) As you answer these questions, is there an air conditioner or fan on?
No, but now I'm chilly.  Darn you!  heehee

7) This week, we are featuring the Muppets. Jim Henson made the first Muppet out of an old coat, and he used ping pong balls for the eyes. Do you have a talent for do-it-yourself/arts and crafts projects?
Yes, I'm pretty crafty.

8) Random question: Think of the last thing you bought. Did you get a good deal?
A water pic, and Mr. Z bought it.  If he buys something you can bet he gets the best price on it.
He's very thrifty.

9) Crazy Sam needs your help: What song or a performer would you like to see featured in a Saturday 9 this summer? You'll begin seeing your suggestions as Saturday 9 themes in mid-June. Thanks!
Billie Joel, anything.  I think you did one of his  already though.  and I'd like to hear a song from The Eagles, and China Grove or any other song by the Doobie Bros.

I love this one.....

but they are all good.... "Black Water"  is great!
Rock ON!!

  1. Funny thing about potato salad -- I never eat it indoors, only at cookouts. There's something about potato salad on a paper plate balanced on my knee.

Trump has made me re-evaluate Nixon a bit. He volunteered in WWII, even though, as a Quaker, he could have gotten out of it. And he worked in the public sector when he could have made more money in private practice. So while I'm still by no means a fan, there are things about Nixon that I feel make the comparisons to Trump unfair. (God! I can't believe I'm extolling Tricky Dick's virtues!)

    Love your song suggestions. Thanks.

    1. Potato salad is so delicious and in California, since we picnic nearly all year, we make it a lot.
Oh yes, Nixon was bad because he was always thinking like Iago, and then as an untouchable King. Trump is bad because he thinks he was elected, which he wasn't, and that, unlike George Washington who rebuffed the title, he was elected King. Americans should beware of whom they vote for because their children will be living with what they have wrought.
Glad you liked the song suggestions. I liked to see the other answers to this question.

    1. Thanks, M. You are kind. ❤️
And yes potato salad does rock! Love it!
I'll do my best to post the memes, because they are fun and I feel close to everyone in them. But I have such a lot of things to do all of a sudden. Feeling that my many S. A. B. L. E. (stash accumulated beyond life expectancy) piles will make Mr.Z and the girls a bit nuts! That question about the 6 year futurecast really got me thinking. It will likely take me a year just to tame these snarly Swartz piles!

  3. Good luck on getting rid of your piles...I so need to work on that myself.
I suggested Billy Joel, too, but love your suggestions of the Eagles and Doobie Bros.

    1. Thank you, Stacy. The one thing I'd never do again is start a business. It was fun but once I got reaaally sick, it was just a mess to deal with.
I liked all your music suggestions, but would like to add Annie's Song into your John Denver one. It's beautiful.

  4. I love the Doobie Brothers! Good choice. Black Water is a fabulous song. Now it is stuck in my head for a bit! I used to play it on the guitar, along with China Grove. That one really runs up and down the neck of the instrument, for sure.

    1. Hi CountryDew...
Sorry for that ear worm 🐛. But it's a nice one, and you'll work it out of your head soon. I'm so impressed that you played in a band, and hope you can always enjoy picking up your guitars from time to time. My daughter turned out to be the next musician in the family, and will likely get my guitars.
"Black Waters" is a fabulous song. I could listen to it every day. A work out tune?

  5. My mother use to race to the deli counter every week to load up on potato salad and coleslaw. I think she must have thought she was feeding us a lot of veggies or something with those. If I ever see them again it will be too soon. :)

    1. Lol! Well, if ketchup can be a bonefide "vegetable"' so can slaw and potato salad, maybe?. 🤓 I still can hardly stand slaw.
Ah, those childhood memories are priceless, and instructive, lol. Have a good week!

  6. I said potato salad for my answer, too. Chips or potato salad (notice a theme?)!

I need to work on my stash, too, and start some nifty project to use up the half-skeins I have accumulated!

  7. Yes, I did. 😁
And, I meant to say, when commenting on your blog, that knitting involves both sides of the brain- both the creative side and problem solving side. So, I'm flailing with the left brain that is supposed to tell me how to read that dang chart! Grrrrr! So, knitters are creative peeps!

  8. Doobies! Yes! I love just about anything by them - with or without Michael McDonald. Excellent suggestion.

We just bought a Waterpik, too. Actually we bought three because we couldn't figure out which one we really wanted. So, no bargains there.

    Have a wonderful week!

  9. Happy Memorial Day, Joy.
Lol about three water pics! The deal we got was for a home one and one to take packing, so to speak.
