It's Twins!

And they fledged today. They are so sweet and innocent. I hope they make it to adulthood. Their mother is small, one of the smallest mourning doves I've ever seen. She did the drag a wing thing for me this am, too. What a dear motherly thing to do.

After they fledged, I was able to water the shade patio. I didn't want to scare the babies into flying too soon. Happily we've had four relatively cool, high humidity days in a row.

That nature trusts us enough to build their future right outside the backdoor is very uplifting. The babies were not afraid of me, just curious.

  1. Oh, I love the doves. Each bird has its own magic to me. Doves bring to mind so many gentle thoughts. I'm happy for you they graced your house this summer. That is a beautiful photo that captures their spirit so well.

This is a Truth, and so beautifully put. It's like the are sharing and including us into their family. I felt the same way about a wren who did the same to us. I even picked out the Cow Bird eggs. Not fair to a little wren. (perfectly OK to do that...wren = songbird, cowbird = pest, killing off songbirds)

  3. Doves are not the brightest birds in the bush, you know. One kept building her nest in a wreath on a friend's front door. Despite having it removed before the eggs were laid, she kept rebuilding it until the wreath was removed and the opportunity gone.

  4. Pogonip, thanks for peeking at the blog. We've gone round and round with the doves season by season, and finally let them build where they have the last two years. They are pretty THICK, as you say. lol Several years they wanted to build in the hanging pots over the dog run and it took a lot of discouragement to stop them doing it. Cats, raccoons, and possums would be able to come right down on top of the nest and get them all from the roof.

  5. Meribeth, good for you. Who needs another cowbird? I was once up at a lake in north county, bird watching, and my friend and I were deep in the rushes when we came across an ornithologist who was doing just what you did, only the nest was from vireos that were getting cuckoo'd. I confess to stealing the doves eggs when they were trying to build over the dog run. I knew from experience the outcome of that poor nesting spot.
