Hi Larjmarj, oh yes they bloom like crazy, even in a pot. This one is in the ground and has a trunk the diameter of a dinner plate; it's about 35 years old.
That's so cute about your nephew calling them Thumb plants. Jades sometimes called dollar plant, or money plant, too. The "thumbs" will make baby plants(they get little red roots)when they fall on the dirt, and stems grow into new plants, too. You can hardly get rid of them in SoCal. :o)
the jade plants are one of my memories of California - my little plant is about the same age as yours ( an auntie gave my brother a cutting when he was little )but it has never flowered.
I didn't even know that they bloomed. We have them of course as house plants here. My nephew used to call them "thumb" plants when he was little ;-)
