It took a long time to find a picture of the sort of amygdules found out there in Southern Arizona, but here is a picture from one of theBEST PAGES on the net.
They have a slightly lacy white on white interior when sawn in half. Beautiful little teardrop shapes. Tomorrow I will show you some of mine, and a yard rock I collected as a special remembrance for my mother.
amygdules (a new word to me!) sent me scurrying across the net
ReplyDelete(an amygdules is a single almold shape instance found in an amygdoid.. (that's helpful!)
but bottom line, the word is related to almond. (almond shaped, not tear drop shaped.. (or says the dictionary..
they are lovely.. White quartz?
quartz is such a pretty stone (and so undervalued!)
Yes, white quartz, OfTroy. it's probably called milky quartz but the best place to see a good amount of it is in banded agates or even with gold sticking out here and there. Collectors of Gold minerals put a high value on it then. ;o)
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for researching that word. Very interesting.
Quartz is really beautiful but not very rare so it is undervalued for it's beauty, as you say. There is no other purple stone that is hard enough for making gems that last besides quartz. And citrine quartz, well, that stuff is drop dead gorgeous.
