Some Agates, some not...

Of Troy loves agates and so do I, so I thought it would be nice to share this photo of a Geode display taken in a September 1992 Gem show at Moab, Utah. Some of these are filled with bands of agate. Some are only thinly walled with agate, and some are covered with Drusey, or with chalcedony which is micro crystalline, and some larger crystals of quartz. Agate is a banded form of Chalcedony, Silicon dioxide, which is one of the most prevalent compounds on the earth. Gorgeous stuff, really.

  1. my mother started me (on a love for agate) she spend a fortune (well a small fortune on a lamp with an agate base (and a night light in it) and loved to light the low watt light and have the agate lit up from with-in.

It my introductions to translucent ROCK--(which at time seemed like an oxymoron!)

  2. Lol, yes an oxymoron!

I can believe that an agate lamp would cost a small fortune. They are amazing. The only thing that comes close to it is molded art glass, like the stuff that is put into stained glass windows. Isn't it amazing to have light come through Rock? I have two large pieces, each, of rose quartz and of orange common opal that are for making lights of. I just need access to a core drill. Dang, talk about something hard to find...
