ZofZknits commented on miniature roses, and so I did a little research into the only nursery that I bought them from in the 70's, and 80's.
Tiny Petals closed in 2005. And there doesn't appear to be anyone who took over the business when the daughter of the original hybridizer (whose name was Dee Bennett) wanted to retire a few years after her mother's death. Tiny Petals doesn't seem to have gotten much publicity but the owner hybridized and patented many wonderful little roses. I thought I might find the patents or something had been sold, but alas.
Nor'East Miniature Roses bought TIny Petals in 2005, and then that company was acquired by Greenheart Farms, Inc, which closed the retail part of the business. So, the 15 fragrant little roses are now history. That is why it is so difficult to find any miniature rose that has a fragrance, they are all basically not being bred and the stock died.
Here is a page with lots of links to tiny roses from another hybridizer from Northern California. I'm not sure of the time line but I do know that Tiny Petals was in business at least as long. It's a shame when a passion dies with a person but that is what life just is.
In the booklet that my sister has with all the roses Tiny Petals had for sale, the information is that 15 of the little roses had fragrances, and describes them in various ways.
So, Z, if they are out there somewhere, I'll keep trying to track them down because they are so lovely, cute, and some DO have a fragrance.
Here's a little bouquet of some of mine... I diddled with the picture back a ways in time and regret it. That's all I have left of them is this memory. The drought in the 80's took them one by one. It was a brutal drought.

Thank you for the link Zippi!
ReplyDeleteI saved it to my favorites, and hopefully when I have the chance I am going to look through each link and see what I find.
It's funny though, you never know how much something means until it's gone.
Take care and thanks again for the links.
You're welcome Z. And yes, you just never know what you've got 'til it's gone.
ReplyDeleteI'll be scanning all those links to the tiny roses, too. There will probably not be another time I'll have many of them but it's great to look at them.
