Here's to the King! Elvis visits Saturday9!

Kentucky Rain

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Kentucky Rain (1970)

Next Thursday, the 8th would be Elvis' 80th birthday, so we're celebrating The King. Here is this week's song.

1. In this song, Elvis hitchhikes across Kentucky. Have you ever hitched a ride?
Actually thumbed a ride?  I've never been brave enough to do it.  Around a big city with freeways, it's always been too dangerous to hitch hike.

Welcome to the 1st Sat 9 of 2015!

2. Elvis received his first guitar for his 11th birthday, even though he'd asked his parents for a bicycle. As an adult, how often do you ride a bike?
This is for a younger person.  but I will answer that I cried when I had to give up cycling.  I thought I would be riding a bike my entire life.  To answer, I rode my bike about 8 miles a day for many years.

3. When Elvis was a child, his family was very poor, often living in rooming houses or public housing. His classmates teased him for being "trashy," which left him shy. Were you more shy or outgoing as a kid?  I was shy around people I didn't know.  I could hardly even eat around strangers, I was that shy.

4. While in high school, Elvis mowed neighbors' lawns with a push mower and a sickle. According to The Home Depot, one of today's most popular mowers is a gas-powered Cub Cadet with a self-mulching feature. Tell us about your lawn mower.  We haven't had a lawn mower for decades.  No lawns.

5. In the 1950s, Frank Sinatra dismissed Elvis as, "deplorable." Yet by the time of Elvis' death, he had revised his opinion and said, "Elvis was the embodiment of the whole American culture." Tell us about something or someone you changed your mind about.  Thomas Jefferson.  I used to think the world of him when I was in high school.  Then, as an adult,  I read his xenophobic writings about the suitability of Native Americans to possess their lands.  These writings were extremely ugly in nature, and, in my view, made him unworthy of being thought of as an intelligent man.

6. After Elvis was discharged from the Army, his first performance was on a Sinatra TV special, sponsored by Timex. Do you wear a watch?  Yes, and I love timepieces of all descriptions, especially Chronograph watches.  Someday, I'll have me one of these.

7. Coinciding with Elvis' 80th birthday, there will be an auction of Presley-related memorabilia at his home in Graceland. One item up for bid is a plush toy he gave to an Army buddy's wife in 1958 for the baby she was expecting. Do you know anyone who is looking forward to a baby in 2015?  I thought long and hard about this but must say, No".  Sadly, I do not know of anyone.

8. None of the items being sold at the Graceland auction actually belonged to Elvis at the time of his death. Everything left to daughter Lisa Marie remains in her possession. Do you have something you cherish that was given to you by a close relative?  I have a tiny glass butterfly necklace of my mother's,  and Mr.Z gave me an silver set opal ring that I wear everyday.

9. The US Postal service sold more than 500 million of the Elvis commemorative stamp. According to the Census Bureau, that was two stamps each for every man, woman and child in the United States. When is the last time you visited the post office?  Before Christmas.  While I am practicing my Breathing - see Word for 2015 - I'm making a list of everyone's birthdays again so I can have the pleasure of sending them a handmade card.  This something I've been promising myself I'll do for several years.  There's no time like the present!

I'll  just call that a goal for 2015.  Since I love having a postal service and see how hard working they all are, supporting them will be an honor. The job they do is priceless if you ask me.

Happy New Year, Sam!  Thank you for this fun meme!  I look forward to it every week!

  1. That's so disappointing about Jefferson! No matter how old I get, I'm still surprised and saddened when great men turn out to be not good.

    1. I know how you feel. There is no way that some of the things that were going on were right EVEN for the times that they were occurring. That's only one of the many bad things out of his writings. So sad.

  2. I have to second Gal's comment. I thought TJ was a decent human being. Well, shoot. :(

  3. Yes, well, he had his dark side, like going out and surveying lands the Congress set aside for soldiers. Both he and Washington were surveyors, and I am positive that Washington picked some of the best lands for himself. I'm not sure about Jefferson on this one.
