Sunday Stealing: Friday Questions...where in I get mouthy

Welcome back to Sunday Stealing which originated on the WTIT Blog with Bud Weiser. Here we will steal all types of questions from every corner of the blogosphere. Our promise to you is that we will work hard to find the most interesting and intelligent questions. You may have heard the expression, “honor among thieves”. In that age-old tradition, we try to credit the blog that we stole it from, if possible. We also provide a link to the victim's questions in our "Previous Victims" widget. (It's our way of saying "Thanks!") Sometimes we edit the original meme, to make it more relevant to our global players, to challenge our players, to select the best questions, or simply to make it less repetitive from recently asked questions from a previously post.
Cheers to all of us thieves!

Kim is a vegan architect and runner from a Chicago suburb.
She posts a question every Friday at ilaxstudio.  I collected a bunch of her Friday questions.

~♥~Thank you Bev for hunting down a new MEME every week! ~♥~

I got a little nostalgic this week

1. Have you ever tried to learn (or re-learn) a foreign language as an adult? Which one? What worked for you?
I'm trying now with both French and Spanish.  I just try to think in either of them.  Not at the same time, mind you.
But I have my french primers that I used as a child and I'm using them.
Spanish was learned later, and I retained more of it.  I could talk to my Grandmother a little most of the time.  My cousins made fun of me but my Grandma didn't.

I learned to speak French when I was a toddler.  My dad taught me before he went totally insane.  That is one legacy I have from him, that I can learn languages with ease.  Elle spoke Spanish very well.  She was fluent.  I was looking forward to having her to refresh mine.  But, Life put it's big foot down on top of that...

2. Do you donate blood? Do you know your blood type?
No I don't donate blood, and yes, I know my blood type. If it were a rare type, I would donate every month, as our amazing soccer-playing friend did.

3. Have you ever been in a play or musical?
School productions. It was fun to do at the time.  But life got less carefree after 6th grade, which used to be the first year of junior high.

4. Do you use certain text or ring tones for specific people? Who gets their own? Or do you just use the default on your phone?
Yes, I use all different ones for each person, anyone I know more than just in passing... and one, a raucous, obnoxious one, for unknowns.  Friends and family tones bring a smile to my face when I hear them on my phone, or even emanating from someone else's phone or from a phone in a movie.

5. When did you get your first digital camera? Do you still shoot on actual film, or all digital now?
I got my first digital, a Ricoh, in 1990.

I used it and my Fujica 35 mm. The Ricoh it EATS Batteries.
I don't use the analog Fujica at all anymore, and I mourn the loss of my wonderful lenses.  I've seen a conversion kit but it looks very dreadful.  It's not something I want to try using on my precious film camera.  I'm all digital now, using my Canon PowerShot S3IS.  I long for a newer one but cripes, I'm 75 years old!  If I were young, I'd take classes in Dark Room construction, and film developing.  Film isn't dead yet; it's only sleeping.
And I'd still get a kick a** refurbed EOS Rebel Canon digital or something,  with an additional 500mm lens.... just because....

6. What do you think someone else would say the most daring thing you’ve done is?
Other than the School thing, I've never done anything else that is extraordinary.

7. Do you talk with your hands?
A little.  I think other people would to if they hadn't been hammered on not to.  Hands are very expressive.  Actors and Dancers can express so much with just a hand movement.  Gangsta's know this, too.

8. Do you have a lucky number? What is it, and what is the story behind it?
I have two, 13 and 37.  It's because of the book of changes.  Those are hexagrams in The Book of Changes, concerning Fellowship and a woman, respectively.  It's too hard to explain in a few words.  But if you know me, and you read them, you will understand.

9. What kind of milk did you drink, growing up? And now?
We drank both powdered milk and canned milk and goat's milk.  Sometimes our milk was mixed very thin.  But, we made it, and if we hadn't had such a useless father, I think we could have all been happy.  We couldn't afford to keep a cow.  Now I don't drink milk at all.

10. What is your favorite kind of pie?
Well my friends. I really never met a pie I didn't like.  I like them all but would probably never eat a game pie.  I don't like hunting for the sake of killing something.  I will be glad to be done with that part of a human beings existence.  My grandpa fished and hunted and we ate everything he got out of necessity - the war and all.  There were many mouths to feed, and game meat was free, more or less.  I don't understand shooting a dove and ripping off the breast and just eating that.  Just throwing away the rest of that little life.....

11. Are you a note taker?
I am now!  But only Just... I really do try to remember, and some days I'm better at it than others.  I float away a lot anymore.  I'm told it happens.....I'm good with it.  It's a comfort.  I think I'd like to be UP all day sometimes.. It's a rest....
I would link this image but it has an obnoxious political ad in it...
I'm so through with that shlock

12. Do you have an eclectic mug collection, or is your stuff all matchy matchy?
Eclectic.  I see, I like, I buy one.  Some come from potters at Farmer's Markets.  But that mug buying is now in the past, though there is one I'm planning to buy from Pistachio's collection.  I love that little bird.  Instagram readers will know about tiny Pistachio.

13. Do you have a junk drawer in your house/garage/at work/wherever?
I have three junk drawers.  There are two in the kitchen, but they aren't junky.  I have one in my sewing room that's a little junky.  String and such.  pins, etc.

14. What is the longest amount of time you’ve worked at one job – and what was/is it?
I worked approximately 9 years as a carpenter, starting at the ground up when I was 11.  By the time I quit I was putting in windows and hanging doors as a finish carpenter.  I still have a love affair with all things wooden.  I am so in LOVE with wood.

15. How old were you when you took your first commercial flight? To where did you fly?
It was in the mid eighties.  I was 40 or so.. ???  It was to Colorado. I'll  tell you a story of my life experiences....
My mother was almost on a flight that crashed and killed everyone aboard.  She had the ticket; she was going home to Ohio to see her dying mother.  My paternal unit and his drunken buddy ran a car straight into a brick wall the night before she was to go.  He was hospitalized, and she cancelled the flight. This incident left me with a very spooky feeling about airliners.  I was 10.

Years later, when I was 19, I still wanted to fly fighter jets.  It was a no go for women in those days.  (1961) I told the Air Force test givers (or what ever they were called) who wanted me to join because of my high scores, that I wanted to fly fighters.  They tried to talk me into joining anyway.  I  told them it was the only thing I was interested in.  After that, there weren't many opportunities, or the money for Airplane tickets.  Until I flew out to Colorado to spend a weekend with my hubby who was in school for the company he worked for.  We saw Leadville, which is a little mining town in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains. and went down the Arkansas River on a raft.  Well, part of the way down it.  It was brilliant fun!
I'll put a plug in for Wikipedia.  You can link things without some UTTERLY obnoxious AD coming up!  I donate to them every year.

  1. I envy you the ability to learn languages with ease. Just learning a few basic phrases has always been a struggle for me.

    1. You have many talents in other places. And, all brains are different, and we sort of fit together like a nice big jigsaw puzzle, giving our strengths to each other. I’d keep up that American painting that you do. I loved your little signs....

    1. Thank you Kwizgiver. I’m at that age when I want to tell my memories, which are very vivid, and clear. For some reason, unknown, my father didn’t die and should have, but my mother lived and was a buffer until she got sick.

  3. Fascinating your "flying" stories!

I found when I was trying to teach myself Portuguese that I would think in Portuguese and if I couldn't remember the word, my brain would substitute a word, not in English, but in french. The brain is a weird organ!

    1. Glad you liked the flight stories. I love our three weekly memes...they are always fun to do. 👍🏻
Ah, this brain of ours never stops it’s surprises! You had a sort of total immersion experience with Portuguese. That is the very best way to learn to speak a language. But the substituting of French?
I will say that I have problems with French and Spanish, when I can’t keep them apart. Italian is even closer to Spanish and the more I learned of it the worse it gets to remember the proper Spanish word. I soon left Italian for another Lifetime.

  4. I don't even remember the brand of the first digital camera I had. I will have to ask my daughter to see if she remembers.

    1. The Ricoh is sort of a challenge to me. It has no card, so downloads directly to the computer. And it gobbles up batteries. I can plug it into the wall, when I find the cord. 😂 I’ll use it indoors. It took wonderful pictures on our four corners trip.
I took its picture yesterday with, you probable guessed it, the iPhone. That little devil phone 📲 gets used more than anything else these days. I blame Instagram. They are so picky about what format they accept, it’s easier to use the iPhone than anything else.
