Saturday 9: Brandy

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9
questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!

Saturday 9: Brandy (1972)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here*And what a pretty song this is!*

1) This song opens in a bar where lonely sailors reminisce about their homes. How long have you lived at your current residence? Does it feel like home?
OK this gets long....
We've lived here over 50 years.  But It still  doesn't feel like home to me. I belong somewhere we never got the chance to live.  Our first house seemed like home though. It was ideally only a couple of miles from the beach.
This place was a compromise in that we moved here because our little girl was so ill from the neighbor's keeping of horses and their colts in her tiny backyard.  That, among other things, was strictly illegal, mind you; but because she was an informant for the police, she got away with a LOT.
As it turned out, one of our little kidlets was deathly allergic to horses.  She was going deaf, and her doctor advised moving away. So here we still are.

2) Brandy is a waitress at the bar. Have you ever worked at a job where you received tips?
I got some when I worked at a hamburger joint when the two older girls were babies. They helped me buy my first guitar, since I never did get my grandpa's guitar.

3) Brandy wears a locket on a braided chain. Are you wearing any jewelry as you answer these 9 questions?
Not any right now, because I just took a shower. Usually I wear three sets of stud earrings, and my wedding set, and a couple of other rings.  And like any royal, I wear my little tiara. HA!

4) According to the lyrics, the sailors seem to prefer whisky or wine. What's your go-to adult beverage?  I don't drink very much. Maybe a little glass of  port or marsala wine from time to time. My adult beverage is very strong decaf coffee.  lol

5) This song was such a big hit that, after its release, Brandy became a popular name for newborn girls. Do you know anyone named Brandy?  No, but I have known a few pet dogs with that name.  It's a pretty name for a girl though.

6) Barry Manilow scored a hit in 1974 with "Mandy." That song was initially called "Brandy," but it was changed to avoid confusion with this record. Do you have a favorite Barry Manilow song?
Yes. This one from same album, "Could it Be Magic"

performed live on stage

7) In 1972, when this song was popular, residents of South Dakota endured a catastrophic flood when Rapid Creek overflowed. Give us a little geography lesson: what body of water is nearest you?
The Beautiful Pacific Ocean.  If you discount a reservoir the city likes to call a "lake". Erie is a lake.. Lake Michigan is a LAKE! 👧

8) Also in 1972, the first women were permitted to run in the Boston marathon. Have you ever visited Boston?
I've never had the pleasure.  It would be nice to visit it.

9) Random summertime question: Would you prefer to swim in a pool, a lake/river, or the ocean?
I prefer to swim in any of the above, except rivers.  The currents in them are a little tricky.
Having said this, Rip tides in the Ocean here are pretty bad.  My husband and I had to strip to our skivies and dive in to rescue the "mad" twins who got caught in a riptide. They did this even though we warned them to not go in the water from the rocks we were on.

Teenagers.. "Duh! What dangers?  Mom, you fuss too much."

You scared yet?

  1. Poor Creature! It must have been painful to be such an outcast.

I'm sorry you had to move. Miserable for your daughter, obviously, but probably no good for the horses, either. There's a reason for most laws. I wish that one had been enforced.

    1. Hi Gal. Thanks for your comments. The horses should have been impounded and I'm really shocked that they weren't. I love horses and that was cruelty. None of the people in the family were riders, so it was a mystery why the poor animals were there at all. And the poor dogs! Miniature poodles.

  2. Bahahaha! Loved your humor about the twins, teenagers, and Swamp Thing! I have never made it all the way to the West Coast to see the Pacific Ocean. I hope I get there before I leave this world. Now Lake Erie...I was born in Erie, PA and live about a 3 hour drive away now. I get to see that a few times a year and love it. What a shame about the neighbor and the horses, but you never know...God must have had a plan and reason for moving you to where you are. We never wanted to live where we are, either, but we wanted to be close to my mom after my dad died...not knowing my mom would meet my stepdad 10 months later and for years wasn't around all that much. Even now, they divide their time between their two houses. Had we known life would have been very different.

    1. Hi Stacy, and thanks for reading my blog. :-) Lake Erie is a beautiful lake. Or it was, lol. I'm never entirely sure, but I think it was the one I saw when I was a tiny kid. God does move in mysterious ways, but His plan for me will always be His mystery. The girls were a lot happier at the other house, I mean a LOT happier. This was like a foreign country up here close to hostile territory with three "friendlies" whom the rest of the street were at war with .. Long story. This house was a last resort but very close to a grammar school they could walk to, like before. I'm sorry that you also aren't where you wanted to be, and the reasons for it. Oh yes, if only one could know the future life would have been very different but you did move there for good reasons.

  3. #4 That brought back memories of when I went to a Starbucks and all the people before me ordered all these fancy coffee drinks and when it was my turn I said a large decaf coffee black. And the clerks says "Whoa, someone who likes real coffee!"

  4. I love that so many of you live near the ocean. I wish I did. The ocean is so soothing and makes me happy.
I know what you mean about not feeling like you are home. I would love to be living in my hometown. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

    1. Hi Lori. And Thanks for reading my blog.
The Ocean makes me very happy, and living close enough to ride bikes to it was heavenly, but alas.... Long ago, and so far away.
We did get there a lot but not so much living 10 miles away, now; we went once a week for fish and chips until the pandemic struck. I really miss that sweet salt air. As you say, it's very soothing. My happiness goes WAY up when we go there. Hope your weekend is calm and sweet. You deserve that. Take care.

  5. I am sorry you had to move and that you don't feel at home where you live. I could say the same, really, but I try not to think that way. But I do tend to think of this as his house, not mine, much of the time.

    1. Hi CountryDew, and thanks for reading here. I don't think about it much anymore, either. It's probably the best thing. I also gave up so much having to move here, away from the best friends that I've ever had. But I always think of blooming where I'm planted though here the soil was a bit poisonous. lol I think of it as "A stranger in a strange land" sort of existence. I'm sorry that you also had this happen. We all do tend to make the most of things us Saturday Niners...

    1. Ah yes! There's nothing as sweet as the smell of the salt air and the calling of the gulls. Isn't it lovely!? We do get to smell the salt air here at night but only when the on shore wind blows. It comes right up the valley and up the mesa where we live. Thanks for reading my blog! Happy Knitting! I'm starting the mate to a SF glove pair today.
