T.J. Hooker
"Everyone can master a Grief but he who has it”

Saturday 9: Beautiful (2005)

 Saturday 9: Beautiful (2005)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Moby sings about a self-involved couple who believes others are fascinated by their glamorous lives. Tell us about the most interesting couple you know.  Do you mean the most fascinating and glamourous?  Darlin',  most of the couples we know are extremely old or they are dead.

 2) This song was inspired by the proliferation of reality shows, where celebrities share their lives on camera. Does the idea of becoming rich and famous in exchange for letting a film crew into your home appeal to you?  Oh, Heck No, Nee, Nae, Nien, Nyet!  That would be a no, as I am the only one allowed to see my ShWartz piles and such.  I will choose to remain poor and running garage sales until my dying breath before anyone with a video camera gets to come into the sewing room or the Craft end of the big room. The Kitchen, dining room, baths and bedrooms yes.... After all, I might have a vintage sewing machine worth "Billions and Billions!" in the craft-room closet. HA! Aziffff

3) "Beautiful" appears in the soundtrack of the movie The Devil Wears Prada, starring Meryl Streep. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance, which is no surprise because she has more Oscar nominations than any other actor or actress. Do you have a favorite Meryl Streep movie?  I like everything she ever did. Or does.  She ain't done yet, not with lucrative offers from Netflix and Prime....

4) Moby has openly discussed how Christ has influenced his life and art. Do you consider yourself religious or spiritual? If yes, how do your beliefs impact your daily life?  I'm a Quaker, and consider myself a Spiritual Christian, in the mold of the Quaker beliefs.  I am a soul WITH a body.  I live my life in light of that belief. We are here to help without judging, but we do have an obligation to not hurt anyone with our quiet ministry.  I think the Dalai Lama says something along those lines. too.

5) His real name is Richard Melville Hall. His parents began calling him "Moby" almost immediately because they felt "Richard Melville Hall" sounded too big for a baby. When did you most recently hold a baby?  I'm sure the last time was when my grand niece was a baby.  She has now graduated University.  She was, and is, such a beautiful child, as is her sister.  They are going to be teachers, like their Mama.

6) He began shaving his head when he was in his 30s. It was at the request of a girlfriend, who said she liked bald men. Would you change your appearance to please your lover?  Husband, yes.  A boyfriend?  No.

7) Moby's house was once owned by Marlon Brando and was later rented to The Beatles. What do you know about the previous residents of your home?  I know that the previous owner was a single man, who was renting to his daughter.  Her family was a set of twins.  The neighbors were so excited about that fact.  The House of Twins. lol

8) In 2005, when "Beautiful" was released, actress Ruth Warrick died. She began her career in radio, made her film debut in Citizen Kane, and she was best known as matriarch Phoebe Tyler on All My Children, a role she played for 35 years. What's the longest you stayed at the same job?  Several years as a teacher's aide.  It was the best job I ever had.

9) Random question: Without looking, do you know how much money is in your checking account right now? Yes.  After a childhood like mine, I have a preternatural instinct about things like that.   The reason is this:  I never knew that every time we moved it was because my bat sh*t crazy dad had lost our house in some scheme of his.  Recall that American women had next to NO control over money, even if the earned it themselves,  until well in to the late 60's.  They couldn't even have their own, separate bank account.

Thanks again, Gal, for this great MEME.  I look Forward to it every week.

    1. I don't get Hulu but I'll look into it! I want to see that "Only Murders in the Building" show. And, no we aren't holding many babies, are we? Sad, really.
About #9. I could write a book but it would be even more terrible than I have revealed.

  4. My students are always fascinated that women weren't financially in control of their lives during my lifetime--that I'm older than financial freedom!

    1. It's awful that it took so long for women to get so many freedoms! But it took a fight to get them. I still can't believe that Harvard held out so long, keeping women out of their school until 1920 for their Education curricula, and 1945 for their school of Medicine.
The financial freedom was a real slap in the face to women but the date is right. I can hardly believe it myself.

  5. #1 Ditto. I am at an age where I check the obituaries to see if any friends made the list that day.
#5 Ditto, some of my grand nieces and nephews are in college while other are just starting school.
#9 Yes, people forget things like that, no bank accounts or credit cards and get fired for being pregnant.

    1. Oh yes, Getting fired for getting pregnant! I forgot about that insult. Women still have to fight for things that the majority of us want for ALL of us to have a choice or a voice about.

  7. I remember when my mother got her first checking account, and the rules had just changed about the time I married. Most of our credit cards have my name first because I set them up that way. I do not yearn for the "good old days."

    1. Shocking isn't it? If my frugal and hard working mother had control of the money, and she could have worked after slicing her finger almost completely off, we would have had a different life.

I hope we never have to see the days of a *plodding Uterus* as our fate, EVER again.
