Saturday9 - Hotel California

Hotel California

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Hotel California (1977)

... Because Country Dew suggested it. Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) Composer Don Henley says this song is about the "journey from innocence to experience." Where do find yourself on that journey? Are you more innocent, or experienced?
A.  I'm too old to claim innocence in/of many of the things that are sung about in this song.  I've never actually liked this song very much.  Sorry, Country Dew.

2) The lyrics refers to the "warm smell of colitas." Do you know what it is that the Eagles noticed in the air?
A.  Since that is the diminutive of bud, I'd guess "burning weed".

3) The girl in the song had her head turned by luxury, including jewelry from Tiffany's and Mercedes Benz autos. Do you consider yourself materialistic?
A. No.  The things I wanted in life were never expensive material.  But I do have a nice stash of yarn and fabric, and about a 30 year supply of worn out Levi's. I've been in love with denim my whole life, and ever since I made a fishing hat for Mr. Z. from the pockets, I've been hankering to make scads of stuff out of them.

Raw Materials

They are in my will.

4) This recording has been lauded by music publications for for its long guitar solo. Are you good on the guitar?
A. I was, once upon a time, an amateur singer of Old Timey, Folk and Country while playing my guitar.  I knew all the chords.  I was never able to read anything but the treble clef, though, which is mostly what you need.

5) There's an error in the lyrics and Don Henley can get a bit testy when interviewers bring it to his attention. Here's the lyric: "So I called up the captain and said, 'Please bring me your wine.' He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here since 1969.'" Do you know what's wrong with it?
A. No.  But, I hope someone does, I'm sure actually that someone does, *smiles* and will clue in the clueless ones.

6) Known as the Eagles' drummer, Henley now spends less time at his drum kit. Sitting at that angle for an extended period of time hurts his back. Sam believes this proves all those warnings she heard from her parents about good posture are true. Do you pay attention to your posture?
A.  I used to, and then I got my back broken by a so called "tame" saddle horse.

7) Joe Walsh is considered the wild man of the Eagles. Think of your circle of friends. Who is the most unpredictable?
A. Joe Walsh is my all time favorite player.
The husband of a friend of mine who, bless his heart, has  OCD, and he's predictably unpredictable.  He has, over the years, said so many inappropriate things to me I've lost count.  She always says to him, "J, have you forgotten to take your meds again??!!!"  In my view some things he said had nothing to do with OCD.

8) In 1977, Star Wars premiered. How many Star Wars movies have you seen?
A. I guess, through the largess of my BIL, we've now been gifted with them all.  So, I've probably seen all of them.  Thank you, G!

9) Random question: "Nosocomephobia" is the fear of hospitals. Are you  nosocomephobic?
A.  You made that up didn't you?  Confess!  No, I'm not afraid of hospitals but I STILL don't want to go to anymore of them.  Abbastanza!

  1. You actually broke your back? WOW! That's intense. Lots of recovery and rehab time, I bet. Good for you that you got through it!

    1. Thanks, it took two years to get realigned. Since I flew about ten feet over the head of the horse, who crow hopped and then bucked me I landed on hard ground in a field, with my hip turned and my top half facing the other way, I broke and twisted my back, which pushed my left hip two inches higher. I did a lot of yoga and ballet to get my back to keep from collapsing and make it strong again.

  2. Lol. How come you ALWAYS manage to make me laugh?!
    Those denim creations are amazing.
I'd love to see a picture of that fishing hat!

    1. The little fishing hat was very cute. Unfortunately it's gone now but I still can make them. I love denim. On PBS, the "Frontier House" show, they had someone make log cabin quilts for one of the houses In red, white (unbleached muslin) and denim strips, with a flannel backed log cabin quilts. I am going to make one if it's the last thing I do.

  3. I don't think inappropriate comments are an attribute of OCD (as an OCD-er).

    1. I agree. He just had a mouth on him. Yep. Age didn't seem to diminish it, either.

On a better note, I wish you Happy knitting, Kwizgiver. I'm still trying to make myself tink (ladder back?) the areas on the sleeve where there should be a knit and not a purl.

    1. If they sang it in Spanish I might like it better. I love the music just not the lyrics. I'm listening to it again.

Still love the music. I'd just play the Lyric as a melody line.

    2. I really should have said that I don't like the lyrics. I love the music! It's awesome! But in my defense I do like "California Dreaming" by the Mamas and Papas.

Isn't that quilt lovely. *sighs* I want to make that one, too.

  5. That Log Cabin quilt is absolutely scrumptious! I've never accumulated enough old denims, but I've always wanted a braided rag rug made from denim. I think it would be gorgeous and it would last forever.

"Bless his heart." Are you saying that in the southern fashion? Ex. Elmer put a lit firecracker in his pants on the 4th. Bless his heart. (Implication being Elmer is so dumb there's no hope for him)

Thanks for the laughs. See you tomorrow for Sunday Stealing!

    1. Yes, that very Southern "Bless His Heart". Lol.

OH, what a good idea to make rugs. I made a little tiny rug from denim and it eventually wore out. It was fun! It was like the sort made for in front of a door or the kitchen sink.

Glad you got some laughs. :)

  6. I love the quilting. It's ok that you don't like this song. :-) I picked it because it was not on Sat 9 when I did a search for something that hadn't been done yet.

    1. Oh I see. I think I was too old fashioned when it came out and it had a lot of shock value for me!
The music itself can really transport a listener.

Hope you have a restful and lovely weekend. I've been having little attacks of what you have all the time, and lady, that doctor should be tarred and feathered!

  8. Lovely quilts!
I believe that spirits are distilled; wine is not.
My daughter traveled around the world and said that she heard that song everywhere!
