Saturday 9: Live drawing? Not on you LIFE!

Wouldn't It Be Nice?

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions
every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Wouldn't It Be Nice? (1966)
... because Nonnie recommended the Beach Boys

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In the video for this song, the Beach Boys dive into the pool with all their clothes on. Have you ever ended up in the water while fully clothed? If yes, were you pushed?
Not so far.  And, I would have to be pushed, but I'd probably take the pusher with me and trounce him.  I can swim reaaaally well.

2) In this song, Mike Love sings he wishes "every kiss could be neverending." Where did you receive your first kiss? Was it wonderful, or awkward?
It was in Mr. Z.s Red Oldsmobile, which he had rebuilt with his dad's help.  The kiss was wonderful.

3) Brian Wilson was the creative force behind the Beach Boys. It's possible that the group's legendary and unique sound came from a incident of bad parenting. Brian's father hit him so hard with a wooden plank that he is deaf in his right ear. Which of your senses is sharpest -- sight, hearing, smell or taste?
That would be smell probably, by now.  The rest are settling into senility.  Or maybe the peaches, cherries and blue berries really aren't as good smelling or tasting as in the "Olden Days"?  Apples are actually better!  Have you noticed this, too?

4) Brian's brother Dennis was the cutest member of the group, and also the only one who could surf. Have you been to the beach yet this summer?
Yes, both here and in Santa Cruz.  We are beach going people, all year long.  I like living near to the Pacific Ocean.  It calms me right down to go there and gaze out over the water.

5) Dennis was also the Beach Boys' most colorful member. In 1968, he struck up an unfortunate and dangerous friendship with Charles Manson. Is there anyone in your life that you worry has bad taste in friends/lovers?
Yes, there is, but not to the level of a Charles Manson.  Let's just say, "Selfish and immature".

6) Lead singer Mike Love is the grumpiest Beach Boy. He refuses to perform if the concert promotional materials refer to the group or their songs as "oldies." Does it bother you to hear the songs, TV shows and movies of your youth described as "classics" or "oldies?"
Not in the least, and this is because everything older than a week in Modern Society is usually being diligently swept under the rug after it's momentary flash in the pan.  That is because our attention spans have been "re-engineered", partly by the media, to be able to stay focused on any given thing for only a very short amount of time.  "Bad news days", and such, have come about because of it.

7) This song has appeared on soundtracks for movies as diverse as Shampoo (1975), The Big Chill (1983),  50 First Dates (2004) and It's Complicated (2009). Do you own any movie soundtracks?
I think we have more than one, but, "O Brother, Where Art Thou" is the only one I can recall off the top of my head.  We loved all the songs and bought it right away.

8) In 1966, the year this song was popular, the Miranda Warning became law. Without looking it up, can you recite any of the Miranda Warning?
I watch so many Detective Dramas that, yes, I know it by heart.  You have the right to remain ignorant, because no one cares whether you get fracked over or not, obviously!  Just ask the Man in Washington!  There, a two sentence RANT! (Please see the Thursday 13 entry)

9) Random question: The local college is pleading for models of all ages and sizes to pose for the life drawing class. Would you help the kids by volunteering to pose in the nude?
No. And this is because I'm too old and crippled up to even hold a pose, unless I am lying down with a shroud over me counts.  Anywho....Hardly a good model.

However, when I had life drawing classes in the 70's, we first had a gorgeous woman who must have gotten a lot of attention from the men, a chubby and adorable woman, and a male model and then we had a father and daughter team who posed for us.  When the male model first showed up, my friend and I could hardly look up from our sketch boards.  It was pretty embarrassing.  I didn't know we were going to have a male model, and I stood in shocked silence for about 10 minutes, trying to get a handle on my embarrassment.  After that, it was a breeze.  When I first took life drawing classes in the very early 60's, all the models wore bathing suits!  It was some sort of law.  Those very early 60's just were not enlightened times.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

  1. Some apples are better. I love the ones with a spicier flavor, like Galas. Others that I used to love, like Red Delicious, just don't even seem to have much flavor at all.
O Brother Where Art Thou is a wonderful movie and soundtrack!

    1. I like many of the new varieties, and Gala is one. Red Delicious, we get the dregs of. The best of them are shipped overseas now and have been for decades. It's money, honey, it's always money.

  2. #8 -- I thought of the Man in Bedminster, NJ. Did you see where he "joked" about officers roughing up suspects (you know, people who haven't been convicted of anything)? I wonder how funny it will seem to him if it's one of his sons or his SIL being "helped" into a police car.

So romantic, you and Mr. Z. Bravo for you two!

    1. Yikes! I didn't see that. But we have so many closet racists and right wing nut jobs in this country I am not surprised that he feels free to joke that way. I agree. He wouldn't feel the same if it were his family.

  3. Loved your two-sentence rant; right on! We are the same about the beach and the water. It's so soothing, so calming, sometimes. WOW about your nude drawing days. Father and daughter posing? How was that not awkward??

    1. About the father/daughter thing. I think because they were nudists, all of us just (eventually) fell right into the spirit of things as a class of budding artists.
Ah, the Beach. I was very surprised that you moved to Idaho because I knew you loved the Ocean so much.
Anyway, back on topic. We go there, the beach, mostly when the sun is setting, at Shelter Island which is on the bay side, and also to sit by the water at, say, Sunset Cliffs, to watch the sunset. I also like to go to the world famous bead store, "The Black Bead", first. I don't go into the water anymore. I might drown in the surf! lol

  4. Yes, some people never do mature. I agree with you. Having said that, I am seriously jealous of you being able to hit two of the most beautiful beaches ever. :)

    1. No they don't mature! Especially when they can't let go of apron strings.

Ah yes, Torrey Pines, here, and Natural Bridges, in Santa Cruz. World class beauty. Also, there's Carmelby the Sea, which has a beautiful white sand beach, that is Glorious at sunset. The sand was all washed away in the huge storms awhile ago, but I think it's back. And China Cove is, of course, gorgeous!
