Saturday 9: Vicki Carr.

Saturday 9: It Must Be Him (1967)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song is about a woman waiting impatiently for a phone call. Do you consider yourself patient?  Yes, I do.

2) Other women (most notably Shirley Bassey and Dottie West) have recorded this song. Harry James and Doc Severinson did instrumental versions. But there's no record of a male singing "Oh dear God! It must be her! Or I shall die!" Do you think that's because waiting for the phone to ring is more "a chick thing," and men simply don't do it?
Men usually are the ones who instigate things, and especially when the song was written.  I know men who would DIE rather than to sit around listening for a phone to ring. So, No...

3) This recording enjoyed a sudden surge of popularity after 20 years when it was included on the soundtrack of Moonstruck, the 1987 film that won Cher an Oscar. Have you seen Moonstruck?
I own the movie, like it, and have watched it many times.  Maybe it's time to watch it again.  But it's on VCR..  😢

4) This week's featured artist, Vikki Carr, was born in El Paso, TX. El Paso can proudly proclaim itself one of America's safest cities. What can your hometown be proud of?
I actually have no true Home Town.   After the paternal unit was deployed, Mom moved in with her parents and I was born; but all three of us moved out to California when I was 2.   Maybe Alhambra is my "home" town?

5) She was a staple on Jerry Lewis' Labor Day Telethon, raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by performing this song. Is your TV on right now? If so, what are you watching?
It isn't on.  I don't watch anything this early unless it's something dire.  This was typed at 8 am on Friday...

6) In 1971, Vikki fulfilled a dream of hers by establishing the Vikki Carr Scholarship Foundation. Every year the foundation awards Hispanic American students money to use toward higher education. She says it's her way of returning "the support and encouragement she received from others" early in her career. If you could establish a charitable foundation, what cause would you like it to benefit?
Like Vicki, I would establish a fund for children, to make sure that they were supported in their goals, re: Education or trades.  America WASTES it's children's lives with it's collective stinginess.  Higher education is just one more victim of an increasingly elitist society.

7)  In 1967, when this song was popular, Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the first heart transplant. Today, one of the most common surgeries performed in the United States is the coronary artery bypass surgery. Have you had any surgeries?
Yes, and, at nearly 76, I've had my fair share of them.

8)  Also in 1967, the RMS Queen Mary was retired after 31 years of service. Have you ever traveled by cruise ship?
No, and I would much rather not be on a cruise ship.  Too BIG!
I'm a sailor at heart, and always wanted to sail around the world in a Sloop or a something like that.

Fun!

9) Random question: Who is your oldest living relative?
Blood relative?  I don't know.  But I do have an in-law who is a whopping 100 years old.

Thanks Sam!

  1. #8: Right now I am reading a real-life mystery about people who actually do that -- sail the world, that is. It's called And the Sea Will Tell by Vincent Bugliosi. This couple loved their gorgeous ship (The Sea Wind) and they were accomplished sailors who took off in search of adventure and ended up on a small island just south of Hawaii. They were sure it would be deserted, but were surprised to find a handful of other couples, doing exactly the same thing. (Spoiler alert: They should have kept going; turns out they were safer at sea with Mother Nature than they were on dry land with their fellow man.)

    1. Oh my, I may not read this book then! And yes, sadly, there are a lot of carnivores in the human "family", and it's always a bad thing to meet one where you are helpless.
There are not a lot of Pirates out there, smugglers who shoot to kill and then steal the boat. It was a dream at one time but now it can be a nightmare.

  2. Something that would make higher education affordable would certainly be a worthy charity! Even trade schools are ridiculously expensive.

    1. I agree about trade schools. The best way to learn a trade used to be to join a union, and then get training under a Master of the trade. Not anymore! The elite criminal element has put "PAID" to these things. We used to be such a wonderful country.

    1. We still have a working VCR deck, but the tapes are so old and fragile now. Who knew that Video tapes were going to go south?? Even the news crews never use them anymore.
      Enjoy your weekend Lori.

    1. My MIL has told me that she is just so tired, too tired.
I'll be glad to be out of here at some point and can reaaaally understand how she feels about everything... She's enjoying herself now more though. I told her, "Life is for the Living, so just enjoy it."

  5. Moonstruck was one of the first movies I purchased on DVD when I donated my VCR and movies to charity.

    1. Good for you, 👍 :o) We have done some donating when we found our favorites on DVD.

I should be doing more DVD shopping because I think about all the movies I still have (and I LOVE) that are on tape, and it makes me sad. Not all of them are on Netflix or Amazon, and I'm not willing to get another service.

  6. One of the most fun cruises we took was a canal trip in England. There were 8 of us and 2 of those people were the friends we traveled with!

    1. Now that, my friend, sounds like a lot of fun. Something worth doing.
A couple of my rockhound friends went on a sailing ship down to Bermuda one year from the Florida Keys. It was a pretty popular ship, but it's not around anymore. It was lost in a hurricane one year. I'll stick with the BIG oceans. lol.

  7. I have Moostruck on iTunes so I don't have to deal with the drama of the latest way to watch a movie. I do love that movie. Thanks for allowing me to view you know who on your sidebar. Geeze. I do like your rant. Okay- have a great weekend Zip!

    1. Thanks Ms. Harriet. Much obliged. And right back to ya...
What is the latest way to watch a movie? And iTunes has GOT to be the best way for this one. I think I C.... ;o)
I have five or six kids in this game.. actually many more, so it's crunch time and if others on the reactionary right were honest, they could see where it's gotten them to try to dissect and destroy the biggest and oldest Democracy in the world for the sake of their brand of Righteousness. Ja?
