Did you say Pie? Saturday9

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

 Saturday 9: American Pie (1971)
... because Country Dew suggested it

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In the lyrics, Don McLean refers to having once been a paper boy. When you were a kid, what job or household chores did you do for spending money?

From 7 years old - when Mother cut her hand badly, which left it permanently damaged - until the end of the pre-teens, I cleaned the house on Saturdays-mopping, dusting, waxing, vacuuming.  All of it.  Summers I helped my mom to can fruit and veggies, fed the chickens, rabbits, and the eating pigeons. Weekdays I did dishes, ironed clothes and babysat my little sibs.  Life on a farm is no joke.  Everybody works.  But then, at 11, I went to work as a carpenter, working weekends and summers doing that as well.  That's where the real money was. ;o)

2) Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye. What's the last drink you ordered?

Mr. Z and I had a glass of wine on our 50th.

3) He drove to the levee but it was dry. When is the last time it rained where you are?

Probably three weeks ago.

4) When McLean was working on the song, he wrote the lyrics out in long hand. It took him 16 pages of lined notebook paper. Today it's a laptop/smartphone/tablet world, and Sam can't remember the last time she hand wrote anything longer than a sign on her front door that read, "Bell broken. Plz knock." What about you? What's the last thing you wrote with pen or pencil?

With a pen, a letter to my daughter a couple of weeks ago.  We've decided to write letters.  It's lovely.  I write nearly everyday, mostly lists but still do two daily crosswords.  That's with a pencil.  I have had a lifelong love affair with pens and pencils, and paper for that matter.  Pencil Drawing, and Pen and Ink are something Beautiful to do, as mediums.

5) McLean's most recent CD is called "Addicted to Black," in reference to Olivia in The Twelfth Night. Quick! Without looking it up, name another character from Shakespeare.

Hamlet

6) Don was born in New Rochelle, New York, which was named one of The Best Walking Cities in America by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). What about your neighborhood? Is it easily walkable?

Not as much as others I've known. Older, small cities in New York must be beautiful to walk through, much like Pasadena and Altadena are here. I'm not sure how much those have changed but they were gorgeous when I was a teenager.

7) In 1971, the year this song was popular, Walt Disney World officially opened. Have you ever been to DisneyLand or Disney World?

Once when I was 11, Mom took us to Disneyland when our aunties from Ohio visited.  My sister was so little that she was very happy about it all.  Now, the whole thing is huge, I imagine.

8) Also in 1971, Mattel introduced Malibu Barbie. This doll was a "sun-loving California girl" and had a distinct tan. Have you ever used a tanning bed?

Californians don't really need them.  So, No.

9) American Pie is also the name of a 1999 movie. Have you seen it?

No, but but it's one of my favorite songs to sing, and we happen to own the album.

  1. Zippi, Girl Carpenter sounds like it could be a series of books, doesn't it? I wish I'd had that experience when I was young because I'm ridiculously unhandy now.

I handwrite letters when I get the chance and I find people really enjoy seeing it.

    1. People certainly do enjoy receiving and writing letters. If your hands can't handle all the stress of holding a pen, there are programs that can duplicate your own style of handwriting. I remember them from a while back though. They might be archived. Ah, yes, I loved my work as a carpenter. I got to learn so many things, from building forms for the foundations, to framing in the rough, and then all the finish work. This was when windows and doors were still built into the openings by hand. It was a very good time to be a carpenter. We built from the foundation all the way through to the finish work. Lovely times.

  2. I miss writing letters to friends... with email and FB that's how we communicate. I may have to talk my friend in CA to see if we can start the good old fashioned writing again!

    1. Before the internet took over so much, and yes, facebook got huge, I was in a circle of pen friends from around the world who were all quilters. I put an ad in the Quilter's Newsletter Magazine for Pen friends, under their heading for it. I got 8 replies! It was very nice, that time of life. Talk to your friend! :-)

  3. I enjoy handwriting things, except I don't enjoy writing on the board at school--it's hard to keep my lines straight.

    1. Hey there, Nice teacher! That would be hard to do, writing straight lines of script on a blackboard. I wouldn't like that writing on the board a lot either. It's also hard on the back. I agree, handwriting is enjoyable. It's one of those things you can do all cozied up with a cuppa and propped up in bed, or outside with the warm breezes and the birds flying through the trees. It's a lovely thing.

  4. My mother used to tell me how she had to go and kill the chicken, pluck it and dress it for dinner. She said she hated and was mad at her sisters for not doing it.

    1. Oh your poor Mom. Everyone should have had to do that chore. I got stuck with all the killing of chickens, but luckily the paternal unit enjoyed killing rabbits and the pigeons and even two of my pet roosters. He also liked killing our pet dogs and cats, too. Filthy man.

    1. I'm glad that I could help out my Mother, who was a hero to me. Even though it was very hard I learned how to do so many things that I'm eternally grateful. But it was hard work, no lie. That's a farm though. Farms are a lot of work.

  6. I don't write letters any more, I usually type them. But oh, in my day - I could write a humdinger! Now I enjoy sending cards. You can't do those via facebook, and I know I love getting mail!

    1. My hands get tired so quickly, trying to write or even to knit. But, I would love to send cards to all the Saturday9ers and the Friday 5's and the Genial Sunday Thieves. It would be brilliant fun! I used to be in a group that send postcards... quilter style ones. Very creative and amazing group. The whole series is under the Postcard tag on this blog. Hope you look at them. Very joyful thing to do.

  7. I used to write tons and tons of letters, then I learned to type and that was the end of handwriting. Now kids don't even learn cursive any more.

    1. Typing was what my Turkish friend and I did for years. Now both of us use computers because it's easier on our hands. This reminds me, it's time to check on her. And, I think it's bad for kids not to be learning how to write long hand-cursive. When I look at my Grandfather's letters they are just amazingly beautiful.

  8. I am quite envious that you own the album. I have recently been contemplating sending out cards to people as a way of reaching out while I am not well. Might as well make somebody else's day, right?

    1. We bought it in the way back, when it first came out. One of the few we have, actually.

Oh, what a lovely thing to do. Cards are one of the sweetest ways to make someone's day. And, it is beneficial for both the giver;s and receiver's hearts, and any other hearts nearby, to be honest. I think it's time to clear that table off in the craft room, and follow your gentle, and kind, example. Since my own hands are so cranky, these sound perfect.

    1. She was hurt really badly, had to undergo delicate hand surgery that didn't work completely. I just had to step up and help her as she was my role model, teacher of patience and the mother love of my life.

  10. Don McLean stuck his thumb in that pie, NAUGHTY boy!
