Saturday9 for July 1st. Battle Hymn of the Republic.

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

The button is in the side bar for this great Meme...  Join us?  I can't transfer the picture of the album over for some reason.

Saturday 9: Battle Hymn of the Republic (1968)

... because it's 4th of July

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

This performance of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" is from Robert Kennedy's funeral. So this week, we focus on him.

1) During WWII, when he was just 17, Robert Kennedy enlisted in the Navy. He was disappointed he was never involved in combat. Tell us about a time when you felt fate/circumstances kept you from something you wanted.

2) Bobby was trained as an altar boy and throughout his life regularly attended early morning mass. When is the last time you attended a worship service?
A. Must be 20 years since I've been to any church, or even to Meeting.

3) He may have been an altar boy, but he was no angel. During junior high he was suspended for punching a classmate. Who is the last person who made you very, very mad?
A. Mad enough to want to hit them?  It was the man who abused his daughter and then gave her a gun.  1979?

4) He had his first date when he was a senior in high school. Looking back, Mary Bailey Gimble told Kennedy biographers that she knew he had a crush on her and wondered why it took him so long to ask her out. Tell us about one of your early crushes.
A. It was in the third grade, another red head.  He was my crush all the way through grade school and Junior Hi.

5) Bobby's wife Ethel is as bubbly and talkative as he was introspective and shy. He was organized, she's messy. While opposites may attract, do you believe the happiest marriages are between partners who are more similar than different?
A.  I'm not sure what attracts people to each other.  Similarity has it's points but so does diversity.  I think marital happiness has to be based on being able to have respectful disagreements and solid love with a little grit and good humor on the side.

6) By November 1960, when he was 35 years old, Bobby already had served as legal counsel to two Senate committees and run his brother's successful Presidential campaign. He was looking forward to a quieter life teaching law but gave in to family pressure to become President Kennedy's Attorney General. Tell us about a time when you were at a crossroads. Who influenced your decision?
A. I have already.  But I'll say it again.  I was all set to go back to college to to earn a teaching degree and credential for teaching special ed classes when I found myself unexpectedly pregnant.  Surprise!

Not knowing I was to have twins I went ahead with steps and getting set to enroll in State College, believing that the BABY could go with me as soon as was possible.  SDSU has/had a nursery school right on campus.  It was a training pre-school, and it would have been perfect.

And then the BABy was twins.  So,  NO college degree, no teaching career, and no money to easily send the older girls to college.  I guess you would say that Life, which happens when we are busily making plans, influenced me.   I did my best to keep up but finally ran out of steam about in their second year.  It was fun and we are glad that they are here and living life in a place they love to be in.

7) In 1777, Colonists celebrated July 4 with the firing of cannons and muskets, followed by a public reading of the Declaration of Independence. What is your neighborhood doing to observe the day?
A.  Our neighborhood never celebrated anything together, not even the Bicentennial year.  My neighbor Dee and I were going to paint a fire hydrant but we never got the time to do it.

8) The Revolutionary War still raged during that summer of 1777. General George Washington allowed his soldiers to celebrate with a double ration of run on July 4. Do you know anyone who is serving in the military this 4th of July?
A. I believe that we have one in the Navy, and know for certain that we have one in the Coast Guard.

9) Celebrity chef Rachael Ray says she considers mini-hamburgers, or "sliders," the All-American food. What will you be eating this 4th of July?
A. I'm so fed up with Celebrity Chefs. And, I don't care what they say call " THE" all American food.  That is just total Bosh.

We are having grilled sausages, potato salad and bean salad, with some ice cream for our meal.
Happy Fourth to all Americans, far and wide.

Celebrate American Diversity!

Happy Fourth of July, My Fellow Americans!

  1. My niece, who just graduated from culinary school, HATES Ms. Ray because she says that technically, Rachael does a lot of stuff wrong and is passing bad habits on to the next generation. (Since my niece is just 22, it amuses me to hear her talk about "the next generation.")

Life does just naturally throw us curves, doesn't it? That's why, as I get older, I have less and less tolerance for manufactured drama. Wait a minute, and a genuine spontaneous drama may just come your way, right?

    1. Oh yes, Life has a way of providing much unwanted drama.
And it is sweet to hear the very young hold forth on various things. Best wishes to your newly hatched Chef. May she survive the drama to come in the kitchens where some prima donna's wield some awesome egos!

  2. What on earth did that man give the girl a gun for? I think I'd have had to wring his neck.

    1. Indeed, he was then, and still is, an odious person who should be in prison, frankly. He's a creep.

  4. There are way too many of those 'Celebrity Chefs'. Don't they realize that they are only on TV because they are a celebrity and not a 'chef'?

    1. I guess not, Harriet. From the studied grace of Joyce Chen and Julia Childs, to this? Brrrr!

  5. Great photo!

I od'd on Rachael ray a long time ago. I like some of the celebrity chefs, but agree there are probably too many of them!

    1. Thank you. It was worth the search, too. I think that diversity is a great strength for our country.
Oh I could go on and on about how disappointing modern cooking shows are, but won't. Heehee

  6. I don't watch celebrity cooking shows, mostly because I don't like to cook. At all. If I could hire a chef, I would. But I also aspect my dislike of cooking has a lot to do with my weight problems, because I eat too much prepared crap. If only I liked to play with a naked chicken ...

    1. I did learn to cook at my mothers knee, but wish I'd had more time for music. Music was an early but stunted passion for me. Think of it as your beautiful gift and well deserved talent.

I used to have to kill chickens and clean them, so to find them in super markets, naked, was a big relief!
