The administration has particularly challenged scientific findings related to the environment and public health opposed by industries such as oil drilling and coal mining. It has also impeded research around human-caused climate change, which President Trump has dismissed despite a global scientific consensus.

But the erosion of science reaches well beyond the environment and climate: In San Francisco, a study of the effects of chemicals on pregnant women has stalled after federal funding abruptly ended. In Washington, D.C., a scientific committee that provided expertise in defending against invasive insects has been disbanded.  In Kansas City, Mo., the hasty relocation of two agricultural agencies that fund crop science and study the economics of farming has led to an exodus of employees and delayed hundreds of millions of dollars in research.

“The disregard for expertise in the federal government is worse than it’s ever been,” said Michael Gerrard, director of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University, which has tracked more than 200 reports of Trump administration efforts to restrict or misuse science since 2017. 'It’s pervasive.' "

Now for the Questions.  

1. Do you ever give things away to your friends? Yes.

2. Does it make you uncomfortable when your parents talk about finding people attractive? If your parents don’t make comments like that, what sort of things can your family members say that do make you feel uncomfortable?  They make me uncomfortable when they tell off color jokes, or make derogatory comments about anything, mostly about other people, and especially those made about other peoples' color or ethnicity.  I'm not related to these people by blood, and I remind myself of that while biting my tongue.  Happily, it's been pretty much stopped in it's tracks, so to speak.  Events have overtaken it.

3. Have you ever heard of an “alternative spring break”? Have you ever participated in one or known someone who has? I've heard of them but never participated in one.  I never had a chance to participate in ANY Spring Break.  No money. 

4. Is there anyone’s friendship or relationship, in particular, that makes you jealous?  Nope.

5. Is there a book series where you loved the first book, but for some reason the other books in the series just didn’t measure up?  Several of the writers of fiction about the Amish.  The crushing numbers of typos, and/or other mistakes like abuse of the language, is wearing out my enthusiasm for them.

6. Are you a registered voter? Oh yes, always from the time I could vote, which a few of you will know was 21 years of age.  That was in the Crinoid Period, by the way, Geologically speaking.

7. Are there any stores/restaurants that you would like to shop/eat at, but there aren’t any located near enough to you? Not that I know of.  When we finally got a Macy's we lost the Bullocks, so maybe I want that back.  But these days, it doesn't much matter what's out there.  I don't go to any of them, except for World Market.  I love that place!  JoAnn's and World Market.  yesssss!

8. How many people would you say you are close with? I actually have dozen of friends I'm really close to.  Who are they?  They are friends and relatives.  We have a support network.

9. Do you ever have smell hallucinations? No.

10. Is there something that you did not used to take seriously, that you either now take seriously or wish that you had in the past (e.g., a relationship that you miss, your education, etc.)?  No, my biggest regret was about something that I took VERY seriously.  I was planning to take classes at San Diego State ( finishing my credits for a degree) as soon as my two little girls were in school full time. Alas, an infection led  to a chain of events that made it impossible.  I wish I'd had the grit to finish anyway, but it was hard on EVERY one. So I quit night school college again some time around the time the twins were two or maybe three.  I still am hit with regrets about that decision.  
 
11. Are there any subjects that you are interested in so much that you would read whole books or academic journals about them?  Oh Cricky, you bet  there are! 

12. Are you physically affectionate with your friends? I am if they are open to hugging. Sure!

13. When you were in school, did you witness a lot of bullying? How did the teachers react to name-calling or violence? I was bullied all through school.  But when I finally lashed out in high school, and kicked someone's fat *ss when they ganged up on me, the teachers sorted it all out, and the other two girls were suspended.  There had been witnesses to it all.  I wore my black eye proudly. My best male friend at the time, commented on it.  He laughed; I laughed.  He certainly understood!

14. If there is a specific celebrity (or two, or three!) that you dislike, is it because of petty reasons or is it because they’ve done something absolutely damning in your mind? It's petty.. and yes.  I don't think they can act, and it's painful to watch.  There are a couple but I couldn't find them.  I think they both have the same first name, "Adam".  If I see that they are in the cast, I won't watch the film.  They are so darn inept and DULL!

15. Are any of your friends/relatives actually impressive artists or writers?  
Relatives: Rebecca.  That kid can draw and paint anything!  She works on a two person CAD artist team for a mid-sized company.  My cousin is an architect who designs BIG buildings.  My Bro has won awards for his schematics for machinery design.  I guess that's draftsmanship.   And I have a niece who is a Tat artist and owns two studios.

Friends: My oil painting teacher, and friend, was/is an incredible Seascape artist.  A "once" neighbor is a sculptor who designs gorgeous, huge, life-like Bronzes.  He's become an expat, and moved to Mexico with his whole studio because of the logistics of it all!  His mother, who befriended me when we moved here, was a fabulous portrait artist.  

 I might actually know some impressive artists and writers among online friends, but I'm not sure who except for two, and even they would deny it to be true.  One of them is a journalist, and the other is a copywriter. ;o)

🎄 Happy Holidays🎄

1. As you can see, Sam loved giving her annual wish list to Santa. Yet some children are reluctant to climb into Jolly Old St. Nick's lap. Did you enjoy the tradition or were you shy? Or did you by pass it altogether -- either because you wrote him a letter or because your family didn't celebrate Christmas?  No, I never sat on Santa's Lap.  But my little brother and sister did.  Santas were only at the big department stores in the war years.   Also, Mother and I spent two of my early years of Christmas in Ohio, in farmland which in those days was very rural.  You see, she went to her parent's house to live there rather than with relatives here when dad left for war.  But, I did write letters to Santa.  

 An Aside: My second memory, ever, was of Christmas.  I remember waking up to a snowy scene mother had created inside the tiny room that my parents had rented when I was three.  It was a little store front so had big windows and a windowed glass door.  She made it look like a snowed-in thing out of a Dickens' Novel, with soap suds and tissue paper cut outs and other things brought from her mother's tree in Ohio.  Mother was a little Magical. I wasn't quite 3,  and we had just moved back to California.  She LOVED Christmas.

2. Are you currently on the Naughty or Nice list? How did you get there?  As far as I know, I'm still on the nice list.  *cues Angelic Choir Music while tripping over her little, red. trident-tipped tail when it wraps itself around her big, hooved feet* 

OOps! 😇  You do notice that halo has slipped a bit, yes? 
 
3. Did you ship any gifts to friends and family this year? If so, which one traveled the farthest?
I didn't.  
 
4. Did you buy yourself a gift this year?  No.  I have far too much junk to want anymore.  I'm gearing up to give a ton of stuff to the Good Will over the next few months. We are having a clearing out!
 
5. What's your favorite holiday-themed movie? Have you seen it yet this year?  I have two favorites currently.  One is, "Get Santa", and the other is, "It's a Wonderful Life".
 
6. Thinking of movies, Christmas is lucrative for Hollywood. Have you ever gone to a movie theater on Christmas Day?  I don't think so.  I seem to remember going to see something around Christmas Time but not of Christmas Day.
 
7. Have you ever suffered an embarrassing moment at the company Christmas party?  No.  And that's probably because I've never BEEN to a company Christmas party.
 
8. What's your favorite beverage in cold weather?  I haven't had it for years, but I like the sort of hot chocolate that one can get in France. Thick and silky smooth.  Like the stuff in the movie, "Chocolat"


 
9. Share a memory from last Christmas.  I put the tree up, but didn't decorate it.  I've done the same this year.  Maybe next year I'll feel like decorating.

Sunday Stealing: Book of Questions

I’m trying to type this out on a miscreant iPad that can’t handle a double dose of coding from copy and paste.  I hope this gets me some slack.

Bev is very understanding and I’m grateful.

Note:  it took me a day but I fixed it!

1. If you  saw a dog locked in a hot car, what would you do?
I’d send someone immediately to get security.  Then I’d wait two minutes and then smash the window, and I’d unlock the door and remove the animal if I could.  I’m happy to say it’s now, in many places, illegal to leave an animal in a locked car in hot weather, with the windows rolled up.  We are all getting more humane it seems.  That is a great thing!

2.  Is it easy for you to accept help when you need it?  
I rarely need help but when it’s completely clear that I do, I will. 
 
3. Have you ever been in a fashion show?
No, but we showed off our dresses we’d made in the 7th grade Home Ec for our mothers.  Does that count? 💃🏻😆. 

4. Would you like to be famous?
No.  Unless my fame could save the lives of children or animals.  Then maybe, yah.

5. What is your most compulsive habit?
I worry too much. Since it’s a habit, I’m working on it.  Giving it “time outs” during the day, and learning to shut it off at night so I can sleep.

6. What do you most strive for in your life: accomplishment, security, love, power, excitement, knowledge, or something else?
Knowledge.  I really want to know things thoroughly. 
 
7.How close and warm is your family?
We all love each other.  We think about each other all the time even though we are scattered all over California.  We are always happy to be in each other’s company.  
 
8 Does that fact that you have never done a thing before increase or decrease its appeal to you?
At my age, I’d have to admit that it decreases its appeal to me.  I’ve driven a car as fast as it could go, which was around 200 mph.  Loved it.  What else is there? Scuba?  I never wanted to do that. 
 
9. If your friends start belittling a common acquaintance, would you defend that person?
My friends just aren’t like that.  Oh you mean, not to their face... and yes, the answer is that I would do.  I’d most likely say that everyone  has their path in life.  Help them walk it if you are their friend.  Just let’s leave out religion and politics, though.  There’s a line not to be crossed.  😆

10.  Do you make a special effort to thank someone who does you a favor.  How do you react when you aren’t thanked for going out of your way for someone?
Well, I do make a special effort.  And if someone forgets to thank me, I believe that the Great Spirit sees and hears All.  That’s enough thanks for me. 
 
11. Since adolescence, in what 3-year period do you feel you experienced the most personal growth and change?
I changed the most between 26 and 29.  I had a huge a “aha” experience (moment) which started a chain of events that did me a world of good. 
 
12. When you do something ridiculous, how much does it bother you to have other people notice it and laugh at you?
 The young me would have been embarrassed.  The old me would make a joke, unless it hurt too much. 
 
13. Do you believe in capital punishment?
No!  Life in prison yes, but not capital punishment.  Too many innocent people are killed by sub standard law enforcers. 
 
14. Do you find it so hard to say “no” that you regulalry do favors yo do not want to do?
 I have NO trouble saying no.  Age teaches you this. 
 
15.  What, if anything, is too serious to be joked about?
Death of a loved one.  That’s far too serious.

1) The lyrics mention "chestnuts roasting on an open fire." Do you often eat chestnuts?
I don't think I've ever had any of the English ones roasted.  I LOVE water chestnuts, though.  I could eat a whole can of them by myself.  

2) There's a reference to Jack Frost, too. Does cold weather help you get into the holiday spirit?
I think so.  It is the time when we warm weather people watch a lot of snowy scenes in Movies.  And a little nippy weather helps when we go around looking at Christmas lights.  It helps the mood for Christmas.

3) Nat sings that turkey helps to make the season bright. We just had it last month for Thanksgiving. Do you enjoy turkey all year around? Or do you consider it primarily a holiday dish? 
We don't eat it anytime but Thanksgiving, when someone else makes it.   I don't ever eat it.  Finally I am freeeeeeeee! I don't have to eat it ever again! 
 
4) This song was published as "The Christmas Song," but people often refer to it as "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" or "Merry Christmas to You." When you think of this song, which title comes to mind?  "Merry Christmas  to You"

5) Nat King Cole had a big hit in the 1950s with "Mona Lisa." The ballad compares an enigmatic woman to the Da Vinci painting, which hangs in the Louvre. The Mona Lisa has been called the most instantly identifiable painting in the world. Can you think of another famous painting that you recognize on sight? (Extra points if you include a picture!)  I can, and here is one of them....Mr Z. bought me a print of this one when we visited the Museum several years ago with Rockhound friends.

6) Best remembered today as a singer, Cole was also an accomplished composer and jazz pianist. Do you like jazz?
I like Jazz.   Not all of it, but a lot of it.  I ADORE ragtime.  BeeBop, not so much.
 
7) The only Christmas card Sam has received so far this year is from her dentist. She never sees Dr. Douglas socially. In fact, she hasn't seen him since her annual check-up last March. Have you received many cards this year?
No, and I don't send out any either.  If I ever have the space and time to hand-make cards, I will send them out to probably less than 20 households.
 
8) When did/will you start holiday shopping this year: Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving/Black Friday, Halloween? Earlier than that?
We don't buy or even exchange Christmas presents with anyone anymore.  No more little kids in the family. 
 
9) This time of year is big for charitable fundraising. Here's your chance to plug a cause or organization that's near and dear to you.
We still do a single, monthly gift to twelve charities, among them is Doctor's Without Borders, and we also sent another gift to Doctors without Borders for my birthday this year.  
Also, we are monthly donors for the Humane Society.  These two charities do so many amazing things, and I hold them very dear to my heart.

Good news for the people who need some.

Now some RANTING for the people who need to HEAR IT! 

Approximately 80,000 African babies die every year from AIDS.  If that were happening in America, we would be mobilized!  Why did companies not allow cash poor African countries to have or to create generic drugs to head off the epidemic in Africa.

WHY!??!??!  Money... lots and lots of it.

Reading all the Racist, ugly things that have lately been being tossed around in Pintarest and Instagram concerning This African epidemic, plus the blaming of Africans for HAVING too many children,  I'm speaking out.  This ignorant, racist spewing just breaks the heart. 

These are people who never willingly left their continent, but who learned to make a living there without destroying it.  They've  been exploited by Arabs and Whites for centuries.
They are also the ancient ancestors of ALL the other skin colors.  They share ALL the same DNA with everyone else.  We got ours from THEM!

To the detractors, I say, "Just have a heart."  If Karma is real, you will be sorry.  Right now, I'm hoping it isn't, so you can just go to HELL where you belong, and can take your fat,, cozy, over fed smugness with you.

I have not done any sharing on P.  I just look at the Pins and save them if they interest me.

I'm in an office space that is shared with our computers.

Not a silly thing, but I'd like to have the chance to participate in a Christmas Eve festival like is in the movie, "Nothing Like the Holidays"  It was ...magical.... They go to all the doors and people come out and join the caroling group.  It's beautiful.  I think it's a traditional Puerto Rican Christmas thing.

When it was first built in 1978, we could only build the tiniest fire in it, like a few little of pieces of kindling.  So, we all sat near it and stared at the little fire.

"I sometimes sits and thinks.  And sometimes I just sits."  I can no longer find the Poster with the Orangutan on it, but the sentiment remains....

Saturday9: The Games People Play

I apologize for the look of this meme this week.  I was trying to get it done on the iPad, and I've ended up having to put it into the PC to correct it.  Now I'm just dog tired and freezing. 

Yes, Kwizgiver, I do note the Irony in this. LOL!

1) This song is about doing what it takes to win. What's the most recent competition you won? (Yes, online solitaire counts.).
Sorry, I only play Free Cell and Candy Crush, and I don’t compete.

2) The lyrics tell us to "go ahead and put your bets on me." Do you often play games of chance -- like the office football pool, or slot machines, or the lottery?
Other than a few lottery tickets at the beginning,  I haven't ever gambled.  I guess it was because my mother abhorred it?  She really instilled  her aversion to it deeply into her kids.

3) The video includes footage of young people competing in The Special Olympics. What's your favorite sport to watch? Is it the same sport you most enjoying playing?
It a toss up between basketball and soccer, for watching.  But I like to play badminton just a tiny bit better than tennis.
4) This week's featured artist, Carrie Underwood, first came to America's attention when she won on American Idol. Prior to competing on that show, she'd never been on an airplane. How old were you when you took your first flight?
I was around 55, and I got a ride in a yellow biplane at an air show.

5) Carrie loves horror and her favorite author is Stephen King. What book are you currently reading?
I’m reading, The Assassination of James Forrestal ,by David Martin.  It's sort of non-fiction Horror story.  The Freedom of information Act has unearthed many buried bodies.... I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't the next thing made NUL.
6) Carrie's duet partner on "The Champion" is rapper Ludacris. In addition to making music, he acts and has appeared in one Sam's favorite shows, Law & Order: SVU. What's your favorite "cop show?"
I really liked "Law and Order".

7) Ludacris is a distant cousin of comedian Richard Pryor. Have you studied your family's genealogy?
As much as I could.  The DNA search was the clincher, though my grandmother and mother were good sources for my maternal and paternal ancestors. The DNA upheld a family story about my Great Grandmother. And, my paternal grandmother even still remembered the names of HER great, great, great Grandparents. 

8) Soccer was a big deal in 2018, the year this song was released. According to Google, "FIFA World Cup" was the news story that generated the most internet searches. What's the last thing you "googled?"
The Book mentioned above in Question 6, to see the name of the author. 


9) Random question: You're battling the flu. The doctor advises you to stay in bed a full five days. As you begin feeling better (around Day 3), do you continue to follow doctor's orders? Or do you get up and start moving before you're supposed to? 
I stay in bed.  When I was a LOT younger I got pneumonia right after the flu having the flu one year.  So, Flu is NO JOKE!  I'm glad that vaccinations are so readily available now.

Thursday Thirteen: "Americanisms"

Colloquial, even a bit funny.  They are some of my favorites.

1.  "Salt in the Devil's Eye!" - said as you gleefully throw a pinch of spilt salt over your left shoulder.

2. "Cat got your tongue?" - Are you speechless?  This for silent types, or kids who won't answer questions like, "Why were you so late coming in last night?"

3. "A bit long in the tooth".  This is likely from Irish horse traders but Americans use it, too.  It means that a person is a little bit , er, Agéd. It can also apply to canned food, and mysterious containers of left overs in the Fridge.

4."Go out there and Break a Leg!".  Said with a big, wide smile...This is from Theater vernacular,  and it means, "Good Luck!".  You can't say "Good luck" because you don't dare jinx a performance. Singers are sent onto stage quite another way, with "May you sing like a Pig." ringing in their ears.  Beverly Sills revealed this one. haha.. Loved that Gal!

5. Someone had their Lunch handed to them, as in they lost a race, fight, or other contest of endurance or skill. 

6."Brown as a Bear"  But some say, "Brown as a Berry", though I do not know why. I haven't ever seen a brown berry, myself.  They may exist.

7. "It's not Rocket Science."  You can say that as a "demure" for a compliment about your skill set, or to demean another poor sod who failed at some simple task.  This is an All-purpose, short, insult/or semi-complimentary thing to say.

8. "Easy as Pie"  This is kinder than the Rocket Science one, and I prefer to use it, especially with children.

9. "It's like pulling hen's teeth."  Meaning? Ok... It's really tough to downright impossible to get information out of someone.  This is true, especially since hen's have no teeth.  So, a very difficult if not impossible time having to deal with someone who does NOT want to do what you want them to do.  Like confess to, "who ate the cookies in the cookie jar?"

10. "Let sleeping dogs lay."  Just do NOT make the situation worse by asking any more questions about anything at all.  Let it be. 

11. "Bought the farm."  OK, this means that someone either "Kicked the Bucket", or they "Fell off the Twig".  Either way, you will be sending a sympathy card somewhere...

Technically that is the full Thirteen but that's sort of cheating so ....Onward, into the Breach!

12. "Knock on Wood."  For Good Luck in an endeavor, or even to ward off bad luck. I've seen it used both ways...In Britain, they say, "Touch Wood'.

 This is going to be controversial.  I know I'm not the only one in the world who likes pigs, especially when they are cute and teeny squealers.  But here it is.....

13. "It's like putting lipstick on a Pig".  You can't make something as ugly as a pig into something pretty with a little gloss, like slapping a layer of paint on a house just before you sell it, or on a battered up car, as this effort changes nothing.  A pig is still a pig, and a battered old car is still a jalopy.

Monday: Some Very VERY dangerous Words from a sitting president....

It doesn’t matter to me whatsoever.

These rules are in place so that when, and if, a combatant is captured alive, they are treated as prisoners and not as animals to be slaughtered.  Every officer knows this.  Every serviceman knows this.  It's a Code so that prisoners are not summarily executed.  Which is what happened to this prisoner.
Its very simple; you want your own soldiers who are taken into custody to have certain protections.

You, as an officer, have to adhere to these rules.  The Code of Conduct.  It's that simple.

2. Hyper-vigilance is my well known quirk.

6. Masterpiece Theater is one of my favorite tv shows ever!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to...Wait a minute!  Isn't it the weekend already?  Thought it was; so, tomorrow my plans include  washing the rest of our clothes.

8. If I could go anywhere on a road trip, I'd go to the Canadian Border, and maybe even go into Alaska.

9. The way that a human being  does not even TRY to use all of their brain's incredible cognitive abilities is something I don't understand.

10. Thanksgiving makes me think of too many bad things in history.
 
11. Sitting in a big, bubbling hot tub is the best way to relax!

12. It looks like Autumn is almost over.

13. Fruit is one of my favorite healthy snacks.

14. The smell of Pine trees after a rain makes me think of  the times that we have travelled all over the five western states, camping out among the pines trees. 

15. When I am feeling lazy I catch up on my sleep which is very troubled these days.

16. When I look to the left, I see a bookcase with all sorts of computer related things on it.

17. The Great Room is the only room that has a good view in my home.

18. The natural, wildlife-friendly landscaping of the back yard  was done dirt cheap!

19. Voting  is a responsibility that all qualified citizens must share.
