Saturday 9: On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe (1946)

Personal note: This is the record that mother had.. By the Andrews Sisters.  She, her sisters, and I used to sing it together. 

 1) In this song, Judy Garland sings about the train whistle and wheels. What sounds make you happy? 

I love those sounds right along with Judy.  When I young, there was no airplane travel to speak of, Trains were the way to go.  I've been back and forth across the US four times by train.  I love trains.  Also, I love the sound of running water, and the sound of the wind.  

I love the sounds of small children playing and talking to each other in their little high pitched voices.  I love the sound of people singing, in choirs and all of it.  I love the sound of my daughter's voices, and my husband's, too.  The sounds birds make.  Songs and calls.  Guitars, flutes and Pianos. 

 2) She tells us that, since she loves dreaming of train travel, she must have "a little gypsy in her heart." How about you? Do you often dream of visiting faraway places? Yes.  I'd have liked to travel the entirety of Europe and Asia, but the Vietnam war sort of spoiled that.  I thought I'd stay in Hostels and get a Vespa.  

3) Judy sings about a future when she's "old and gray and settled down." At what age do you consider a person is old?  Probably when they themselves think they are.  I consider myself old now, but I didn't at 70.  I was "Old and Busted" when I fell and broke my shoulder during the pandemic.  Until then, I was still pretty spry.   

4) This song is from the movie, The Harvey Girls. Filming was a time of stress for Judy. She was appearing before the cameras by day (she sprained her ankle in a scene where slips down a hill), recording the soundtrack by night, and dealing with lawyers regarding her divorce from composer David Rose. Yet watching the movie, none of the tension shows. Do you work well under pressure? I was raising Irish twins, a set of identical twins and had a job as an aide.  I think back to those times, and though the daily set up looked like a train schedule, as my Turkish friend once described her own life, it all got done.   

5) Judy relaxed on the set by knitting and would make blankets and caps for the children of crew members. Do you knit?  

I do.  I love to knit and I knit almost every day.  Mother didn't knit or crochet.  So, I started trying to knit at 9 as a neighbor had already taught me to crochet.  

I didn't have much success until my paternal aunt and grandma came to California when I was 13, and taught me the proper cast on.  I was left handed but I knit right handed, like they do.  A world of difference, that.... 

The girls who knit argyles in Jr. High tried to teach me but my right hand was rebellious. lol Now, if anything stands still long enough, I will knit it something..... I want to be more active as a Guerilla Knitter......

6) Judy admitted she had a problem with tardiness. Do you strive to be prompt?  

Yes I do. 

7) In 1946, when this song was on the radio, cigarette cases were very popular. Since these metal cases were standard issue in the Army during WWII, many soldiers got into the habit of using them and continued to after the war ended. Women often carried fabric or leather cigarette cases that closed with a clasp like a coin purse. In the 1940s, elegant cigarette cases were a fashionable gift but today, they are largely forgotten. Did you ever carry one? Do you know anyone who did?  My uncle carried one from his army days.  My mother never had one, and my Dad didn't smoke.  I only smoked for two years, and no, I didn't carry one.  That was in the 60's and I don't think anyone ever carried them much anymore. 

8) Also in 1946, bikinis appeared for the first time on runways in Paris. How often did you don swimwear during 2022?  *Gets back up from falling down laughing.*  That would be a never. 

9) Random question: Thinking of your past romantic involvements, were you truly in love with one of them, some of them, or all of them? I really am one of those rare kids who came of age in the 1960's who never had a boyfriend until they met and married their first love.  I did have a crush on a boy from the time we were in 3rd grade until I met him again, briefly in the 10th.  He had moved away after the sixth grade, and seeing him again was the cure.  lol

Three on Thursday: This n That...

1. I'm so tired of Infomercials. But I'm learning that they have NO redeeming social value what so EVER!   They should have to send a dollar to your favorite charity for every one of them that you sit patiently through to try to "get the Point" as they wind around hill and dale to make it.  Yes?

2.   This is a picture of when my little three year old twin daughter wrote her name in Spaghetti.  So, like any bemused mama, I took a picture of it. I didn't have the heart to scold her for playing with her food.

3. And here is a photo of my "Irish Twins" and some of their friends.  The girls are dressed up for Halloween, and my neighbor's adorable Pomeranian puppy needed to get Elle's attention. Or, maybe she just didn't like Clowns?  She was such a cutie, that little dog.  The little boys are also from the neighborhood.  Halloween is a very exciting holiday for kids, isn't it? And, also, apparently for little Pomeranian puppies!

I was saving this for later reference, but feel an urgency to speak out about it NOW.

After police brutality in Seattle, Los Angeles, New York City, Portland, and lately the killings that involve abuse of police power that have resulted in numerous deaths, mostly of Blacks and Hispanics, I now feel that it's even more important then ever to spread this message wider. Now before the final door is slammed on our fingers.

 Remember the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo in Argentina?  I do.  I'll never forget them!  

Since I've watched this violence against my own people ramp up through the years, starting with Kent State,  I'm not about to let it go without having something to say.  

We will have a sick society if the Elected individuals, whom we expect to PROTECT our rights, are granting cart blanche to any city police doing the job that is reserved for the National Guard exclusively. 

Even though the National Guard troops botched Kent State, I have to ask, if it isn't their job to be called out and handle insurgency or riots?  What is the national guard for anyway?  Let's get rid of one or the other. 

The Treasury Agents are NOT the National Guard, either, no matter what Trump thinks.

I really believe that we need to keep an eye on the rising mess of having THIS level of Governmental power going on in our  DEMOCRACY!  

This is not a South American dictatorship.  It's The United States of America isn't it?  

We the People are a free people.  Or, perhaps we have incrementally slipped into more of a "Third World" Dictatorship.  I wonder.

Saturday 9: Kiss (1986)

1) In this week's song, Prince insists there's no particular sign he's more compatible with. Do you take astrology seriously? Once upon a time, when I still believed the Universe was not hostile, I did.  That was a LONG time ago. hehehe

2) He tells his prospective lover there's no need to be flirty. Are you a good flirt? I've never flirted in my life.  So, I guess I'm likely to be very BAD at it.

3) He refers to the nighttime soap opera Dynasty. Were you a fan? 

Ah.. no, not even in the World of Reruns.  

4) "Kiss" was recorded at Sunset Sound Recorders in Hollywood. Built by Walt Disney Studio, it's the studio where the soundtracks to Mary Poppins and 101 Dalmatians were recorded. When you think of Disney movies, what's the first song that comes to mind?  

I think it's beautiful, though Christopher Plummer dubbed it, "The Sound of Mucus".  Such a PITA, that man.  Bahahahaha  But I love him.  Or should that be, "loved"?  I can almost hear him popping up in the background saying, "I'm not dead yet!" Monty Python style.  "Bring out your DEAD!"  Wasn't he Hunky?

5) Prince said he was "obsessed" with Mozart and read everything he could find about the master. Do you often read biographies? If yes, who was the last one about? Yes, I have read a lot of them in the past.  However, I'm reading a lot of political stuff, and other non-fiction right now.  I have read Memoirs lately, but that should actually be under the classification of '"Fiction" in many cases.  

6) He loved snacking while watching a movie in the theater and would mix Goobers (chocolate-covered peanuts) with his popcorn. When you go to the movies, do you visit the concession counter?  Oh man, I wish I'd thought about mixing Goobers into my popped corn. Sheesh!  What a great idea!

Any way... I haven't been to a theater in decades but I would choose popcorn when I did go. 

7) In 1986, when this song was popular, Peewee's Playhouse premiered. While ostensibly for children, this show had many, many adult viewers. Do you ever watch kids' shows today? Ahhhhh... that would be a "no" .  I'm old enough to have already gone through my second childhood twice already and now I just want to be an irresponsible teenager.   I didn't get to be one the last time through....in days of yore, you know.. the Year 1.  I did get to shake hands with Methuselah.   That was pretty cool. 

8) Also in 1986, Sears shoppers were painting their interior walls with "Country Clover," a pale beige with a hint of pink. What color is the room you're in right now?  It's a beautiful fern green, with curtains I made out of sheets from Sears, that are a print of trees and their leaves with the sun shining through them. 

9) Random question: Do you enjoy pressing the pedal to the metal and driving fast? Oh He🏑🏑 yes.  I don't do it anymore because, well, you see we have a tippy little four x four now.  And it's not any fun at all.

Saturday 9: Hurting Each Other (1972)

1) This week's song was written by Gary Geld and Peter Udell, who also wrote 1962's "Sealed with a Kiss." What was in the last envelope you sealed?  

It was a letter to my  youngest daughter, who wanted to start writing letters back and forth.  

2) In "Hurting Each Other," Karen Carpenter sings she wishes she and her lover could stop making each other cry. Have you most recently shed a tear in the last week, the last month, or longer ago than that? 

I don’t cry very much anymore but I did cry when reading the news last night, late, when I couldn’t sleep. 

I haven’t, yet, become a real cry baby, and these were Angry tears, mostly.  I cried because nothing freakin’ changes, y’know? 

3) One of the Carpenters' first records was a cover of the Beatles' "Ticket to Ride." Both Karen and Richard were huge fans and nervous about how the Beatles would react to their version. They were thrilled to learn that Paul McCartney responded by saying Karen had "one of the best female voices in the world." Tell us some news you received recently that brightened your day.  

My kids and their friends and loved ones are all safe from the floods, storms, and winds in Central Coast. Thanks to God! 🍀 🙏🏼🤟🏼

4) Karen died in 1983, but her musical partner and big brother Richard is still with us. He has said he grew up a big fan Top 40 radio, listening every morning as he got ready for school and every afternoon while doing homework. When you were a kid, did you like to study with music or the TV on? Or would you prefer quiet? 

I could do math and things that weren't Word related studies with some background music.   Anything else?  I liked it quiet. TV was not on until later at night. 

5) Karen and Richard spent their teen years in Downey, California. It has the distinction of being home to the nation's oldest, still-operating McDonald's. It's been on the same site on Lakewood Blvd. since 1953. Tell us about a business in your neighborhood that seems to have always been right there, in that spot.  That would be our local "House of Fabrics".  I haven't been there in three years, but it's still there as far as I know.

 

6) The siblings may have had a squeaky clean public image, but Richard did have a brush with the law while in Downey. The Carpenter family lived for a time in an apartment complex, and one of their neighbors -- a policeman -- objected to Richard "banging on the piano" at all hours. When did you most recently interact with an officer of the law?  

There are law enforcement officers in our extended family so it was probably the last time we went to Thanksgiving dinner.  But you mean "officially".  That would maybe 15 years ago in a neighborhood problem over a neighbor’s smashed garage window late at night. 

7) In 1972, when this song was popular, Mark Spitz was America's premier Olympian, winning seven Gold Medals. A poster of Spitz wearing his red, white and blue swim trunks and all seven medals was a top seller. Can you recall a poster that decorated your bedroom wall when you were a kid?  

Posters weren't a "thing"  when I was a kid.  We were still stealing bird eggs from nests for food and using our tiny bows and arrows to get small game for the evening bird and rodent roasts.  Truth!  lol  

I was a teen in the late 50's, and early 60's.  

The first poster I even owned was this one....  I'm not sure what happened to it, since I haven't seen it lately..

8) Also in 1972, Liza Minnelli was encouraging us to "come to the cabaret." Without looking it up, do you know who Liza's famous parents were? 

I know that Judi Garland is/was her mother but not who her father is/was. 

9) Random question: Are you a better student or teacher? 

As to me, I am good student, a life long learner.  I would have loved to be a Special Ed teacher but Fate had a different path for me. 

 Actual experience:  I home schooled the twins through part of junior high and part of high school.  They then went to an alternative school, and they graduating 2 years early.  I'd like to think that the efforts I made for them helped them do this, and with Honors, but it was most likely innate.  

What happened after was certainly not a planned entry into adulthood, but I hoped that my dedication to giving them the best launch on offer at the time would eventually  help them throughout their lives.  They are, like their sisters before them, caring, loving, thoughtful and “connected” to their “better angels”.

1. When I need help, and probably because I was "born" in Hollywood where my parents lived until the war broke out....I'd like to call this guy....

I happen to be reading a book (fiction) about Icelanders and the Scientists there -volcanologists and Geophysicists, etc- who are working to find a better way to predict the volcanic movements and other events in order to better protect people and property.  The book cover is in the side bar.  

It's so far pretty great, though it is fiction so the characters have their peccadillos  revealed.  *Shocked Face*

Saturday 9: What's New, Pussycat? (1965)

Welcome to the first Saturday 9 of 2023.

1) In this song, Tom Jones wants to know what's new in his girl's life. Here at Saturday 9, we're concentrating on the new year. What do you hope will be new and different in your life during 2023?I'm hoping that my kids are all happy, and that I will finally get rid of all the things from running a craft business that I no longer need or want in  my life.

 2) He sings that he has flowers for his special girl. Are there fresh flowers in your home right now?None, but I am hoping to get started back to having African Violets inside.  And, I'd like to get my pretty potted garden back outside, and all the rest of my flowers. 

3) He also wants to spend hours with her. What is something you'd like to spend more time doing in 2023?  Please see Answer #1. 

4) Before his music career took off, Tom Jones supported himself by selling vacuum cleaners. Could your home benefit from a once-over with a vacuum right now?   It certainly can.  I'm finding the new hand held vacuum very nice, but very heavy for my hands.  It will be part of my 2023 weight training program.

5) Memorabilia from Tom's 1990 world tour was available eBay and the bids went up to $599 a jacket worn by the stage crew. Have you ever bought anything at an auction (online or otherwise)?  Yes, once upon a time, at a PBS Auction, I bought Piano lessons.  I learned the chords on the keyboard and how to use them to play songs. It was fun.  But I discovered that I really wanted to play by note, and  the Piano is now long gone. 

6) Tom's adult grandson, Alex, represented Wales in rifle shooting in the Commonwealth Games. Is there a sport you'd like to try, or get better at, in 2023?  No, I am just a little too old to learn a new sport.  Well, I could do weight lifting while cleaning boxes out, so that I can get yet ANOTHER benefit from my business clearings. 

7) In 1965, when this song was popular, Tom Jones made a new friend, Elvis Presley. Tom had a meeting at Paramount Studios to discuss recording a song for a movie soundtrack and Elvis was finishing a film. It was the beginning of a friendship that would continue for the rest of Elvis' life. Did you make any new friends in 2022?  Yes, two on line friends.  We have been exchanging Political snark.  It's been fun.  I'm pretty sure neither of them is an insurrectionist.  Hehe... We are of an age that we can TALK and THINK about tossing smoke bombs but not actually be able to HEFT them. 

8) Also in 1965, The Sound of Music premiered and became one of the most successful movies of all time. Have you seen it?   Yes, I saw it in a Theater.  The BIG screen.  It was Glorious! 

9) Random question: Were you like those shoppers we saw on TV, in line at a retailer after the holidays to exchange a gift that wasn't quite right?  I was not.  The return lines got major billings and were on television 📺 wow!  A slow news day, eh?
