 That said, Happy New Year to everyone!

1) In this song, Paula Abdul celebrates the promise of a new day. Here at Saturday 9, we're celebrating the promise of a new year. What do you hope 2022 will bring?  More Peace and less war. 

 

Since we succeeded in igniting another war that we then ultimately lost, I do so I wish for more Peace.  

 

With that Boogie man/woman, "Mother" Russia trying to re-assert its power over the Black Seaports, like Odessa, we will see what we shall see.  I think I hate power mad male humans on the whole.

 

2) She sings that we should see the wisdom from mistakes of the past. What wisdom did you gain in 2021?  Seeing as I have lost my mind, I don't think I've actually GAINED in wisdom. So, the score is, Zip for Zippi. 

 

3) What is something you'd like to spend more time doing in 2022?  Let's see: I would like to be Eating more comfort foods, like lasagna, and knitting a WHOLE LOT MORE.  Also, I want to be reading History, Mysteries, Dog stories, and Tomes about Indian families getting their kids married off.  I want to read all of that while learning to encant spells, practicing black magic sacrifices, and um...eating chocolate from See's?

 
4) Paula Abdul was once a "Laker Girl" and performed at L.A. Laker games. Do you have a favorite NBA team?  I like the Boston Celtics, and the Lakers, that's two.  Well, that's not so surprising since I do have a split personality.

 

5) In 2009, she hosted RAH!, an elite cheer leading competition.  Do you remember any cheers from your school years?  A couple, since I went to high school in two places, 

I do like the Aztecs' one the best though:

 It all seems a little silly now but we put everything we had into those cheers back in the day....

 

The Terriers cheers  just didn't move me, even a little bit.  

6) While famous for performing, Paula has arguably been more successful for her work behind the scenes, winning an Emmy for her choreography. Are you comfortable being the center of attention? Or would you rather work behind the scenes?  About Paula.... It's a shame that she doesn't sing anymore, but I get it.  She IS a great dancer.  

 

Me? I'd much rather work behind the scene. I really don't like to be the center of attention.  Maybe "Close to the center", but not, "all eyes upon me" in the center.

 

7) She taught actor Val Kilmer how to dance for his role as Jim Morrison in the biopic The Doors. What talent, knowledge or advice have you recently shared?  I don't really share advice anymore.  Maybe if I were a big success, had finished college and gotten to be the teacher I wanted to be, I'd feel like there was a talent, or useful knowledge or advice to share.  Getting mad at politicians and making voodoo dolls of them to torture is a skill that's sort of hard to share, or even talk about. You know?

8) Paula was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 2005 and uses a prescription biologic every day to help her cope with pain in her toes. On your last trip to the drug store, did you pick up a prescription, or something else?  I'm truly sorry to hear that she is afflicted.  My aunts had that and it's a horrible disease.

My last trip to the Drugstore, I picked up a flu shot. And some hair clips. Which reminds me.........

9) Random question: You have been house-hunting for months. You finally find your dream home and are just about to say "yes" when you spot a mouse scurrying across the floor. Would you take the house anyway?  Mice are potential pets.  I'd take the house anyway and just domesticate the girls and put the boys outside. I actually had a pet field mouse so they really are adorable to me. 

Oh yes...

 

Happy New Year!  

But, As one of my male high school friends screamed into the midnight sky on this day in the late 50's, "It's going to be just as bad as the last one, Suckers!!"

I happen to like the police, and even adore some of them.  The Good they do is overshadowed by  Bad Apples. But the Bad, of course, has to be addressed.  We can't have it going on anymore and still survive the next century.

Heart Warming and now to Earth Warming....Speaking of survival.....

This time, maybe humanity (meaning the leaders and shakers of the world of Men) will pay attention as the Antarctic glacier is shrinking many times faster than predicted.  

One thing to understand about Antarctica, is that there is a land mass under all that heavy ice, and the HUGE landmass itself will start to rebound. 

Once that happens, it's not going to just sit there, it will effect the whole seabed around it.  Just saying.  

And that my friends, is elementary Geology.  And it's a no brainer....

Three on Thursday: Needle swings to Negative Territories...

Oregon may split apart.  This isn't an Isolated incident.  California almost went through this several years ago when a large group of counties in Northern California wanted to secede from the state.  

I'm trying to not be sad but it's getting harder and harder to laugh at the idiotic Quasi-political fires being set here and there. 

I need to get out of here and stay out. You Know?  It's time to just go home and not look back. Yep.

I’m reading Agatha Christie and all of the Wallander Mysteries, as well as “Tell All Tomes” from Historians or former officials of various agencies who were beheaded by trumpty’s Wrecking Crew. 

I’m also switching to bigger yarn and needles for my SHORT fingered glove project.  The little needles and tiny circumferences of size 1’s and fingering weight yarns have taken a toll on thumbs that are entering *Century-of-use* territory.  

I will post here and there, with some inevitable, hot button, spleen venting over Major Events, plus always for Saturday Nine. .

SATURDAY 9: HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

1. As you can see, when Sam Winters was a little girl, she loved giving her annual wish list to Santa. If you could ask Santa for anything at all, right now, what would it be?   

Peace on Earth!  But God alone can make that happen. 🙏

Also, this is being done on a laptop..its wonky, and I'm sorry..

2. Are you currently on the Naughty or Nice list? 

I am fairly sure I'm not on the Nice list.   

How did you get there? I'm not sure but if I'm not on it I'm pretty sure I'll never know why. ;o)  Too many reasons!  My "brotherly love" is laying in tatters on the floor by my feet.

3. Are you traveling this Christmas? If so, are you going by car, plane or train?   

No. And some out of town (and unmasked ) #%$*& visitors to a 'photo shoot' up north made sure we have no visitors, either.  

4. Did you buy yourself a gift this year?   

Nope. I can't buy the things I want the most so why bother.  
5. What's your favorite holiday-themed movie or TV special? 

I have a new favorite film this year.  

Have you seen it yet this year?  

Yes. "Merry Friggin' Christmas", with Ed Asner andRobin Williams plus a little cameo by Oliver Platt.  It's a total  scream, but you have to like semi film Noire.

6. Which do you prefer: candy canes or gingerbread?   

If prefer fudge, thank you very much.

7. Close your eyes and tell us the first carol that comes to mind.

8. What's your favorite winter beverage?

9. What do you remember most about the 2020 holiday season?   

What's to Remember?  😝Gah!  What a year!  And this one is a *rinse and repeat* of that level of "memorable".  My favorite Christmas was the year that the two older girls got their little banana seat bikes.  Now there was a year....😻

1) In this video, Jon Bon Jovi recalls decorating the tree with Cindy Crawford. They took turns wearing a Santa hat. Will anyone in your household be donning a Santa hat this season?  

Those days are long gone, Sadly.  Hubby used to play Santa at the Rockhound meetings.

2) He sings of the salutations he's received from friends and relatives. Have you received many holiday cards this year?   

We have only received two. If you don't send them you don't get them.

3) Will you wrap many presents? Or do you prefer to use gift bags? 

Our family doesn't exchange gifts anymore, though we DO go shopping the day after, but not since Covid got it's grip on the Nation's Throat.

 4) Jon Bon Jovi says he and Frank Sinatra are distant relatives. Do you believe that musicality is a genetic gift, or that it can be taught?  

I believe that musicality is an innate talent of all humane beings.  But, sadly few people have the time, money, or encouragement to develop it.  Obviously there are those who have more of it, or who display it earlier than others, but everyone has the capacity.

5) Jon is such a big Star Wars fan that he wrote a carol called "R2-D2: We Wish You a Merry Christmas." There a dozen Star Wars movies. How many have you seen?  

I think we've seen, likely...seven or eight of them. We own the first three. DH helped me out on this.

6) Jon once guest-starred as Carrie's love interest in an episode of Sex and the City, the popular HBO sitcom set in New York. The new reboot, And Just Like That, also centers around NYC life. Where does your favorite TV show take place?

I haven't got a favorite one.  I used to enjoy Major Dad, especially the episode where Dad comes in while his stepdaughters are having a sleep over and the girls all have green facials on.  They start screaming and he steps back in amusement and surprise and says, "Night Recon???"

7) Jon met his wife, Dorothea, when they were still in high school. Do you remember who you wanted to marry when you were in high school? No.  I never considered marrying in high school because I was headed for college. 

 

8) At Christmastime 1992, when this song was released, toys that tied into Disney's Little Mermaid were very popular. Have you purchased toys for anyone on your gift list this year?  No, not even for myself! lol

 

9) Jon recorded "Please Come Home for Christmas" to benefit The Special Olympics. Here's your chance to plug a cause or organization that's near and dear to you.

We donate monthly to the Humane Society. And that's really near and dear to me.  Wolfie was a pound rescue from when they were merging to two agencies. I'm so glad that we don't have a City pound anymore.

Why are ALL the fonts different every time I use this editor?  Has Blogger finally Bit the big one?

Why can't I move to New Zealand?  I'd like to live in a normal democracy. One that's both for and of the people.  My DD and I talked about this the other day.  I wonder if the Maori feel this is correct, my populist outburst.

1) This song is about a girl who just got her drivers license. Who taught you to drive? 

I guess my Dad did.  I learned to drive when I was 13, and being out in the desert gave me lots of room to move.  Also, all the kids in my generation of farmers learned early.  For my part, I went to the San Gabriel River bed and drove all over that place..

2) Do you like your drivers license/state ID photo? 

It's OK.  I never even look at it anymore. 

3) Think back to the first ticket you received. How old were you, and what was it for?

I didn't get a ticket until I was in my 20's.  I missed a stop sign.

4) In this week's song, Olivia Rodrigo is brokenhearted, driving through her boyfriend's neighborhood, certain that he has taken up with the sophisticated blonde girl. When it comes to romance, do you have a jealous streak?

 I've been jealous from time to time, but not anymore. Besides, if someone is going to cheat on you, what can you do about it?  Threaten them with Great Bodily Harm?  A hosing by a gang from East L.A.? lol 

5) Olivia grew up in Temecula, California. Temecula is home to 40 wineries and dozens of tasting rooms. Have you ever attended a wine tasting?

 Not in a formal way.  But we went on a tour of wine country ( up North) one year and gathered some awesome wines.  I like the sweet wines, like Port and Marsala.

6) Her first on-screen appearance was in a commercial for Old Navy stores. Old Navy is owned by the same company as Banana Republic, Gap and Athletica. Have you done any of your holiday shopping at one of those stores? (Yes, their websites count.)

Just Gap, from which I bought a lot of clothes, and now, lately I've given Old Navy a look in.  I won't buy from on line stores unless I know or have seen the garment in Real Life.  You know, In the Wild?

7) She went on to star in projects for Disney studios. That's also how pop stars Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, and Christina Aguilera got started. Arguably the first teen star created by Disney studios was Annette Funicello. Do you remember her?

Oh yes, she was such a great kid. 

8) "Drivers License" was one of this year's most popular songs. One of this year's most popular books is John Grisham's The Judge's List. Do you expect to do much reading between now and the end of the year? If so, what's on your TBR (to be read) list?

I'm reading an advance copy of Peril , by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa.  I can only have it for 7 days so I'm reading every minute.  It's an EYE popper!

9) Random Question: What is the longest line you ever stood in, and was it worth it?

The first and second Covid19 Vaccine shots, and Oh boy was it worth it.

Saturday 9: Got My Mind Set on You (1976)

1) George Harrison sings that he requires money, patience and time. Which of those three do you wish for most this morning?  Time..... I'd like to have more time, as long as I don't outlive anyone else in my family.  Please, God, noooo!  I think always of our Bev, who has endured so MUCH!  Bless her.. I don't know how she did it.

2) This was long one of George's favorite songs. He first heard it back in September, 1963 -- months before the Beatles became an international phenomenon -- when he visited his sister in Benton, IL. Is there a song that reminds you of a trip you took?   Since I was only two years old when my parents came back to California, I was too young to remember any song but "jingle Bells", which I could sing in my piping, little, baby voice. At Grandpa's house, all the little kiddies sang along with the guitar.  But I was excited to be going HOME with my parents!  Little did I know.....

 

Thus, my song is:  "California Dreaming" by the Mama's and the Papa's.

AND:  That "memorable trip" would be the one that Hubby and I took all the way from the southern most part of a city in California, on the border of Mexico, to a hundred yards into Oregon at that border.  We did this  when DH retired. It was the first time I had ever been the whole length of California. 

 

 An Aside: AKA my life story: 

I would have been Born in California if WWII hadn't broken out... It's the perfect song for me.  My parent's were both teens when they moved here, 16 and 18. They lived the dream in Hollywood while they were first married.  Imagine that!  They had some involvement with the Pasadena Playhouse because, after Mother died, my Sister and I found pictures of them both with a big group of friends and actors/players from that troupe.  Mother had talked about the group to me when I was in my late 30's.  I think it was the most fun she'd ever had in her marriage.

3) For years, George thought his birthday was February 25. When he was 17, he saw his birth certificate and learned he was really born on the 24th. His mother explained that he was born just before midnight on the 24th and she didn't get to hold him until early morning on the 25th, so she considered the 25th as his birthday. Do you know any interesting stories about the day you were born?  

I was born in the dead of winter, during a snowstorm in my grandparent's house in the farmlands of Ohio. The family doctor who came to deliver the baby (me) almost didn't make it there, the weather was so fierce. 

 

After I was born, he gave Mother back half of the fee, $50, as a gift for what he called the "little Christmas Baby".  Things were so different back in the day.

4) When George was just 14, he met Paul McCartney on a bus en route to school. Tell us about a time when you met someone who ended up changing your life. 

My life was changed forever when I went to a party in the neighborhood, given by people for whom I baby sat.  There I met my sweet husband.  He was 180 degrees from the Criminal/jerk of a toxic Dad.  Hubby was like an aircraft carrier... solid and steady no matter the weather.

5) Then 17, John Lennon was not interested in letting George perform with his band. He dismissed George as too young. Paul insisted George get a chance and the rest, as they say, is history. Tell us about someone who stood up for you and helped you succeed.

Jon L was sort of a bossy Git.  Now for the answer to the question:

My someone is Aunt Jo.  She was there for me from the beginning when we first met.  I was  13.  She saw almost all of what my sibs and I were all going through under our father's cruelty. I will always love you Aunt Jo!

 
6) In the 1970s, George took up gardening. He said that clearing away weeds and overgrowth helped him clear his head, and he was very proud of his jasmine flowers. What's your hobby? Why do you enjoy it? 

I love to Garden and to read. But, the garden is nearly all dead because I can't go out and take care of it.  So I read, mostly history, but Mysteries also.

I have always been a Artist and Crafter. And I have a room full of  stufffff to show for it.  

 

Now, I pretty much only knit and sketch a little. Foremost, at this time is knitting. 

In the past I've made quilts, done a  lot of life drawing, and a painted a few oil paintings.  

I love to sew any old thing and to make upcycled clothing.  I've sold my Jewelry and Ceramics at craft shows, and have three glue guns. lol for the odd  household thing, here and there. 

 

Yes, I even have an industrial machine and know how to use it.  We used it to sew some of the things for an Upholstery class we took together.  But alas, the sewing table/bed is waiting in the garage to be refinished the last thirty odd years.  Lesson Learned.

7) He also enjoyed playing ukulele and encouraged others to do the same. George often gave ukuleles as birthday and Christmas gifts. What's the last gift you received?  

Wow!  I have a Ukulele.  Learning to play it without being able to sing anymore seems sort of pointless...I want to say George gave it to me.  Do you think anyone will believe me?

Ah.. The answer to the question is... My last gift was an early birthday present from my DD.  She sends a donation every year to my favorite charity:  Women for Women  and yes, a shameless plug.  But, it's a great org...

8) At the Academy Awards in spring 1976, another George was in the news. George Burns won an Oscar for his performance in The Sunshine Boys. Who was in the last movie you watched?  

We watched, "One Magic Christmas" tonight.  We love that movie.  Here is a LINK to it on the web. It will show you the whole cast...

9) What's the last thing you dropped? Did it break?

I dropped a hint.  Hopefully it didn't break!
