Saturday 9: So Into You (1977)

1) The singer says that he noticed the lady in question as soon as she walked into the room. Tell us about someone who made a powerful first impression on you.  
I've never met a celebrity.  However, the first person to do this was my Crystallography Professor at UCLA.  He made a big impression on me.  I was fascinated by him.

2) He sings that he's so into her, he can't think about other, more mundane things. Do you find you get easily distracted from your daily tasks? Or do you enjoy seeing your everyday chores through completion?
Unfortunately, now, I am easily distracted.  And also have to work in short spurts to protect me sore back.  I have to make many more lists now or I forget even important things.

3) The band took their name from Georgia's biggest city. Have you ever been to Atlanta?
I've never been to the Southern States at all.

4) The Atlanta Rhythm Section once played the White House. President Carter's son, Chip, was a big fan and invited them to play at his 28th birthday party. How did you celebrate your last birthday?
We went out for dinner and watched a College basketball play off game on the big screen.  It was really fun.

5) Studio One, where the band made all their recordings, was torn down and replaced by a parking lot. Can you think of a structure that you missed, after it met with a wrecking ball?
No, but I can tell you about one that was saved!  There is a place downtown that is incredible.  The Spreckles Theater.  We went to see Jean Pierre Rampal in concert there. That theater has the greatest acoustics.  It would have been very sad if it had been torn down.  However, we should tear down the more modern San Diego Opera House.

6) This song hit #7 on the US pop charts. 7 is the number most often chosen as "a lucky number." How about you? Do you have a lucky number?  I don't know about lucky, but 37 is the number that I like BEST.  It is my favorite number.  

7) Today the Atlanta Rhythm Section reunites with to play at classic rock concerts. What oldies band would you love to see again? Aerosmith, The Eagles, or Moody Blues.  I like me some Rock.

8) In 1977, the star of NBC's Chico and the Man, Freddie Prinze, took his own life. Is there a celebrity death you found shocking?
 I just leave it all alone. And, I never did get shocked by it.  Millions of ordinary people died at that same time as some celeb, and they didn't get a two word notice by the world. 

9) Random question: What word do you always misspell? I cansistantly mispell sow mainy wurds its hawrd tuo peick onlie wone.

I bit the bullet and did the Nat Geo Geno20 test.  They found that my DNA shows 17% Native American.  So, now we know. lol  They can't tell the tribe,  but my own research suggests Pueblo and most likely Hopi..

The Reaper and the Flowers

It's Spring, in the Southern Hemisphere.... so I went looking for a poem I read a long time ago about a woman who died in Spring, when all the flowers were blooming.  

I found this instead.  Maybe someday I will find the other, more modern one.....

Two, very early, Tuesday Tails: One funny. One is FEMA's new map of Flood danger for the entire US, so far....

I hope that this finds you all happy, and me busily knitting.  Next week is really hectic so this is being written early.

The first item is mighty interesting.  It's a Tuesday Tails because all of Other Earthlings - innocent parties who have had no part in this - are going to die, like the chickens in cages and the hogs in their pens, during Florence.

The Humans who care have to try harder to get the nitwits in Washington on board for this..

Antarctica is  rebounding  at an accelerated rate.  It also sits on it's very own tectonic plate.  And, as the ice cap there melts, the land will rebound.   This, by itself is enough to be concerned about, but combined with the new sea levels, it's even more serious.  Antarctica also has a huge dome of magma under the mantle there, not unlike the one at Yellowstone.  Geology is getting very interesting.

Time to build the New Age Ark?

Music Monday: "This little Light of Mine"...Etta James

Food Foraging Friday? Not pretty cakes and pies. A Rant

20,000 children die everyday from starvation.  Unicef estimates, this is from 2010, that number to be 25,000, and they should know. 

You may have seen this on Pinterest:

Whatever that number is, It's HUGE!

And being vegan doesn't really help this.  But a keen and caring awareness does. 
Don't let that "Circus McGurcus" in Washington distract you from this reality.   We need to protect our children. 

This Earth is a tiny speck of blue, way out on the edge of a Galaxy. and at the edge of the Universe.  We should be able to feed the people who are here.  We have the resources, we just lack the will!

Live in the US?  We have hungry ones here, too.  Little kids who go to bed hungry every night.  When I was a teacher's aide, I was given the assignment of taking some of these kids, one on one, to just talk about life with them, and so I know they didn't get to eat either breakfast or sometimes dinner. 

It's gotten worse and worse for them as their parents cannot find work to sustain their families.  This was caused by Financial Giants who haven't given a damn since before the banks collapsed in 2008. 
Ladies, we have a job to do. 

We really need to do this for the kids, ours, and "theirs".  Theirs includes some pretty important present and future leaders who want to make a world community that WORKS.  We can't afford to be greedy about this, or clueless.  There is no escape.  There is no Space vehicle.  We can't take "It", what ever that is, with us no matter what we try.

Women of Science.... Rejoice.....And God Yes, I am A Feminist!

DH sent me THIS link to me about Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell's story from the Live Science Site,

Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell wins a Three Million Dollar Breakthrough Prize after having the been passed over for the Nobel Prize for her discovery of Pulsars.  THIS link is to her story on WIKIpedia..

And, I would like to bring to mind the story of another woman scientist, an X-Ray Crystallography expert who did X-Ray Diffraction studies, and actually discovered the structure of the DNA Helix.  She was passed over for a Noble prize in Chemistry related to her instrumental work on the structure of the DNA molecule.  Her name is Rosalind Franklin, and HERE is her story on WIKI.

has been on my (then) Sewing Room door since the 1970's when I first read about Rosalind Franklin.  I put it up in her honor.  It served as a daily reminder that Women get thrown under the bus even in America.

We have a crap system of dominance in place in this  world and it's been running things into the ground most likely since the dawn of time.  It has served us Ill.

There is one bright spot:  The Rosalind Franklin University in Chicago is named for her.   Go Chicago!

1.   Ever had ramen noodles? How do you fix yours? Do you add anything to them? 
 I have,  and I love them.  I cook them first in water, drain, and put them in a vegetable broth with some shredded carrots, and shredded greens, flavored with soy sauce and toasted sesame seed oil.  I also do Udon noodles this way.  I throw away the packaged spices if we can't find the plain pack noodles.

2.   Do you like spicy foods?
I love them, but they don't love me anymore.  So, I don't eat anything spicy

3.   Crispy or grilled chicken on your salad?
Grilled 

4.   Do you like corn on the cob?
I do

5.   Pumpkin or apple pie?
Both.  One's a custard pie, and one is a fruit pie. It would be rude and sort of Un-American of me to not like them both. 

6.   Dinner rolls or crescent rolls?
They are both bread.  I'll eat whatever anyone ELSE wants to bring.  At home, I would make Croissant, the real crescent rolls.

7.   How do you like your eggs?
I like them cooked. 

8.   Most expensive meal you have ever eaten?
Seafood, when I was still able to eat it.

9.   Do you like stir fry?
I love it.

10.  What kind of pots and pans do you use?
We have a couple of woks, and normal french cooking sorts of pots and pans and some Iron fry pans, plus some non-stick fry pans.

11.   Do you like Brussel sprouts?
Yes, I do like them.  One of my favorites.

12.   Canned or fresh tomatoes?
Each has their place in my cooking.  As I started young with my mother on her little farm, I've canned about a gazillion on them, too.  But not lately.  I love to make pasta al pomodoro with just fresh tomato, a little olive oil, tiny chop of fresh basil, and some of the pasta cooking water.  Very good stuff.

13.   BBQ Chicken or Ribs?
Grilled chicken at home.  We don't like BBQ sauce, and don't eat the Piggies unless from Chipotlé.  Sorry.

14.   Do you like coffee?
I still love the smell of it brewing.  Sadly, I can no longer drink it.

15.   Cupcakes or ice cream cake?
This is America!  We can like both things, yes?  So I will... Both..

16.   Hot dogs or polish sausage?
Polish sausage. But see #13.  Regular Hot dogs give me the willies.

17.   Do you like cinnamon toast?
I love the stuff and never eat it.  I should do that, and soon.  But you didn't ask about Cinnamon French Toast.  That's crazy good!

18.   Do you eat dinner at the table or in front of the TV?
Always at the table.  It's sort of a unspoken commitment we made.

19.   Do you like to BBQ?
I like to grill but don't like BBQ sauce anymore. So, I guess that's a No?

20.   Do you like cold cuts?
We don't eat them. and I don't like them.

21.   Do you like rice?
I love rice.

22.   Macaroni and cheese?
I love mac and cheese.

23.   Key Lime Pie?
Yes, I like all sorts of fruit and savory pies.

24.   Favorite Fair/Carnival Food?
Those Giant Cinnamon Rolls but it's been years since I've had one.

25.   What kind of gravy do you like?
Drippings Gravies, except that gray stuff.  I can't manage to eat it, over biscuits or any other way.

26.   Jalapeno Poppers?
Truly loved them back in the day.

27.   Broccoli/Chicken Alfredo?
Never had it.  Probably not ever going to either.  I do like Broccoli and Chicken but not mixed together.

28.   Do you like cottage cheese?
Yes.
29.   Do you like lasagna?
Yes, the meatless stuff we make. 

30.   Do you like hard boiled eggs?
Yes, I like them and eat one several times a week. 

 I don't eat most of these foods away from home though.  Yes, I am a Brass Plated Pill.. I admit it.

Saturday 9: Gotta Travel On (1959)

Gal, that's a cute song.  I remember it.  

1) In this song, the Billy Grammer sings that "summer's almost gone, winter's coming on." When you look out your window, do you see any evidence that the seasons are changing?
No, not really, though I know it's coming because the evening light has grown shorter.  I don't even see any signs of Fall.  This is Southern California and the leaves this far south don't even turn until somewhere around November.  Just in time for Thanksgiving!

2) He admits he has laid around and played around for too long. Do you consider lazy days to be wasted days?
I am old enough to appreciate Lazy Days for what they are, a Rest.  
Life can turn dreadfully "busy" overnight, and mine has been far too "busy" since I turned 50 for me to think of these rest days as "lazy".  They are REST days for later, something to look back on when I (inevitably) must tell myself, "This too shall pass".

3) Billy relaxed by fishing. Tell us about a visit you made to a pier, or a ride you took on a boat, this past year. (Bonus points if you went fishing!)
I haven't been to sea in a boat since we went whale watching with our Audubon club a long time ago.  I'd love to sail again.  But it's not an option.  Fishing is long ago in the past.  I used to surf cast and that's the most fun I ever had fishing.  It was lovely to watch that line sing out over the waves and land in the water, a long, long way out there...... 

4) Born in 1925, Mr. Grammer was the eldest of 13 children. He and his wife Ruth were childless. What do you think is the ideal size for a family? 
Being childless is fine if that's the way you roll, and though I'm not sure I could go as far as having a family of 13 in the "have em"column I, personally, am glad we had a family.  
I don't think about ideal sizes of families.  It's a personal choice.  
An the fun side:  A Rockhound friend who was a nurse, a Texan, and a depression baby, said, in that twangy Texas accent I'd grown to love, "My mother used to say, 'I wouldn't take a million dollars for any of my children, but I wouldn't give you a nickle for another.' "  
I'm sure that many people in my generation, or older, know that saying.  

5) This song was very popular on juke boxes back in 1959. When were you last in a bar or restaurant that had a juke box? Did you play it?
I haven't seen a Juke Box in Ages.   I think the last time I played one was in a quiet, and cute, little restaurant when we decided to play the flip-side of "Stairway to Heaven" which, of course, is quite beautiful.  THAT song, "Black Dog" is something I don't recommend in any way, shape, or form.  It was embarrassing. We hung our heads and looked sheepish. 

6) In 1959, movie tickets zoomed up in price to $1.00 and Ben Hur was the big blockbuster. What's the last movie you saw in a theater? Do you remember how much the ticket cost?
We went, the last time ever, to see a movie that was in theaters before "Master and Commander" was released.  So it was in Summer of 2003 (Had to look that up).  I remember seeing the poster for the coming release of that movie in the window.  Our tickets were discounted because we were seniors, so maybe they were only $7 each?  We saw that movie but at home.  I want to see that movie again... *puts up a stickie note*

7) Huckleberry Hound was a hit with the younger audience in 1959. What cartoon did you enjoy as a kid? 
I was 16 in 1959, and watched my favorite from time to time with my little sister.  It is, "Rocky and Bullwinkle", with a side of "Foghorn Leghorn".   Thanks for the pleasant memories.

8) In 1959, continuing dramas (soap operas) were still broadcast each day on the radio. When you turn on the radio, do you listen for talk, news, or music?
What's a radio?  Never talk or news...And, all kidding aside,  I haven't listened to a radio for decades.  Music was the ONLY thing I used to listen to on a radio but that was over 40 years ago.  

Meanwhile, we've had boomboxes, and a lovely stereo system at home, now defunct, and all our vans, trucks, and the Jeep had great sound systems.  At home, I played LPs, 8 tracks, cassette tapes or CDs and did this ASAP.... Gah.. radio?  But, now I listen to my music on my IPod or the PC. 

I thank God for YouTube!  Or should it be Euturpe?  Not quite a pun, but close. lol

9) Random question -- Which competition would you rather judge: The Pillsbury Bake Off, The Miss America Pageant, or Dancing with the Stars? 
I'm really no judge at all of dancing or beauty, so I'll take The Pillsbury Bake Off.  It would be nice to have the side benefit of all those good things to eat.  I feel fully qualified to judge good cooking.

I have no idea what is the worst.  I can't even remember any bad ones.  But then I don't watch a lot of crappy movies like Eating Rauol anymore.  Don't go there....lol

Who was your FIRST date?
A random blind date- a nice kid, really, who was a friend of my work friend's boyfriend. 

Do you still talk to your FIRST love?
Oh yes. all the time.  I married him.

What was your FIRST alcoholic drink?
My little cousins and I would beg our grandpa for a sip of his whiskey when we all sang together so it was then.  He gave us a half a thimbleful.  I still have the now tiny thimble as it was my grandmother's. She was a tiny little hill folk Gal, all of 4'7".

What was your FIRST job?
For Cash money?  Carpenter

What was your FIRST car?
A red 55 Merc, in High School.

Where did you go on your FIRST ride on an airplane?
I took a ride at an airshow in a biplane.  We just went up and circled around the airfield and back down.  I was about 35.....

Who was your FIRST best friend; do you still talk?
No. We'd been best friends for about three years.  And, it ended badly when I said to her, in the fifth grade,  "I love you".  She took it to mean something I'd never heard of in my life.  That is OK but that's not what I meant.  I probably would have taken a bullet for her I cared for her so much.  

I'm so glad that kids can now say this to each other and not have a "blow up in your face" thing happen that is both confusing and heartbreaking.  Now, looking back, I know I didn't do anything wrong.  It really WAS her problem.

Whose wedding did you attend the FIRST time?
My niece's first wedding.  And, it literally was the first wedding I'd ever attended.  I missed my Sister-in-Law's wedding because our baby was very sick and it was a three hour drive and a stay over night.  I was not happy about it but babies need to stay put when they are so sick. 

Tell us about your FIRST roommate.
She was a senior at UCLA, and was amazingly kind and just a beautiful person.  We stayed in touch until just before she died a few years ago.  She taught me so much.  She showed me what it takes to pick up the pieces and go on after losing a child.  I will love you, Pat, forever.

If you had one wish, what would it be (other than more wishes)?
Darn, that's what I was going to wish for... you are mean! I used to think that I'd wish for my daughter back healthy and happy. But then, she would have to die all over again at some point and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

What is something you would learn if you had the chance?
Latin.  I want to speak it.

Did you marry the FIRST person you were in love with? 
Yes, as a matter of fact, I did.

What were the first lessons you ever took and why? 
I never had music lessons or any other lesson as a kid other than what I learned, which was Encyclopedic, at my mother's knee. So, a long way down the road.... I think it would have to be Upholstery.  We took the adult extension classes and had an amazing teacher.  ROP is still one of the best programs that was ever created.

What is the first thing you do when you get home? 
I take of my shoes and my *&%$@!* brassiere!
