"Landslide"  And it always will be. This is probably my favorite song out of half a million...



2. A song you hated once but now love
Can't recall a single one.  Sorry.  It's sad.  I am forgetting my music...I'm gladTo have forgotten the hated ones, too!
 
3. Do you remember your first CD?
No. Those came along during the blitz called Twin Babies.  But I can remember my first 45.  It is Bill Haley and His Comets with, "Rock Around the Clock"



 
4. Has your music taste changed much since childhood?
Most definitely.  Aside from singing with my Grandpa, the music of my childhood was Benny Goodman, Arty Shaw, Dorsey Brothers, Glenn Miller, and The Andrew's Sisters.  And then, when I was in the 6th grade, Elvis Presley arrived!  My mother bought me a little transistor radio which she then told me to hide from my dad.  He was the most controlling a**hat I've ever met. 
 
5. Favorite genre?  
Musical?  I love music and it's impossible to choose.  (However... see #6...*points downward*)
 
6. What's a genre or style of music that you just don't understand?
That would be Rap.  I just don't understand why it's even called Music.  Hip Hop I get, but not Rap.  And yes, there is a difference, at least there once was.  Maybe not anymore. 🤔
 
7. Do you have a process for listening to music, such as listening to the instruments more than words? 
I only follow the Lyrics if it's a solo.  Otherwise I'm listening to the Orchestration. That can get me into trouble, as my eldest daughter once pointed out, AC-DC has some pretty Rasty song lyrics.  🤯
 
8. What's your favorite thing about your favorite song?
I love that HUGE swell of emotion that I get when I hear the opening chords.
 
9. Do you have a favorite decade for music?
No.  I like music from all the way back to the beginning.  I like to hear tribal songs, for instance.
 
10. Can you play any instruments?
I can play both the Guitar and Ukulele.  When I finally get my arm fixed, I will play them again!

11. Do you remember your first favorite song?
"Git Along Little Dogies", and singing it with all my cousins while Grandpa sang with us, and played his guitar. 



12. What was the first concert you ever attended?
When I was 16, I went to see Redlands University's Concert Orchestra play Summer Concerts in Redlands Bowl.  I drove myself.  Freeeeeeedommmmm!

Now for the Questions!

 
1) "Ooh la la" is defined as an interjection said when you think someone or something is "surprising, unusual or attractive." Looking back over this week, did you come across anything that deserves an "ooh la la?" That would be my grand nieces!  Three!  There was a little girl there, too, but I didn't meet her.  She may be one of my grand nieces.  She is a pretty, little thing.

2) In this song, Britney Spears sings that she's eager to accompany you, even if you're not a millionaire. But let's say you suddenly become really rich. What's the first leisure trip you would take with your new funds? Who would you bring along?  I would buy a great big, new motor home, hire a driver so that Mr. Z could relax, and take our daughters and their friends anywhere they want to go to see.  And I would buy the Girls all houses to come back to!

3) Britney is eager to dance with you, even if you don't wear designer clothes. Let's say you need to add a blouse (or shirt) to your wardrobe. Where's your go-to for clothes shopping?
The Good Will store, and I'm not ashamed to say so.  I'm not a fancy person but I've always found the most amazingly beautiful things to wear there.  Not high fashion but shall we say FUN Fashion?
 
4) The video begins with Britney at the movies with her two young sons. Will you be seeing any family members this weekend? Not this weekend.  That was last weekend.   There were lots of Nieces, Nephews, and Grands.  All grown up and flown the nests....Well, I did see one youngster who is a grandniece but didn't get to meet her.  She's adorable and cute, though.  I think she was my grandniece.  And, if not, I'll adopt her anyway...

5) This is a theme from the movie Smurfs 2. A Smurf is a little blue creature who lives in a mushroom-shaped house in the forest. Assuming that your home is not shaped like a mushroom and isn't in the forest, how would you describe your abode? (Mansion, ranch house, farm house, high-rise, igloo ...)  It's supposed to be a Ranch house,  but it's just a little tract house that they gave a fancy name to.  I WISH I lived in a real Ranch House.  Because it would come with a RANCH attached to it, yes?  
Igloo.  I'd like one, too, please.  Temporary housing is just plain fun.

6) Britney admits to smoking and biting her nails. What bad habit do you wish you could break? Worry.  I'm a worrier.  I worry about everyone and everything.  I worry a lot about Wolfie but then he seems very content at the moment to just sleep in his favorite place, that is: jammed up against his lovely Papa. 

7) In 2013, when this song was popular, Pope Benedict resigned. Thinking over your working life, have you been more nervous on your first day of a job, or the last one?  I remember that Pope.  He left a HUGE tome for Pope Francis to read.  

The only job that made me nervous on the first day was as an operator at Bell Systems.  It was fun but it was a lot to learn.  My supervisor was an amazing Gal.  I really liked her.

8) Also in 2013, golfer Phil Mickelson won the British Open. When did you most recently golf? Maybe sometime in a past life, but I doubt it.  But there are a lot of Scots in my ancestry. So, that might be somewhere back there... the Golf Gene.  I do like pitch and putt and also Miniature Golf.  It's fun. 

9) Random question -- On what part of your body was the last itch you scratched?  My head.  It itches if the weather (air) dries out very much. I've yet to find a mild enough product for my delicate scalp. Lol.. Actually it's the Rhino Gene I carry, in addition to the Scot's one.  Rhino's like mud baths.  Hey, that's an idea!

Saturday 9: Venus in Blue Jeans (1962)

1) Like the dream girl described in this song, Sam is wearing jeans as she composes this Saturday 9. Is there a lot of denim in your wardrobe?  Dresses, and jackets, yes.  I don't wear blue jeans anymore.  They are now way too uncomfortable.  But I miss being able to wear them.

2) Jimmy Clanton likens this girl to the Venus de Milo, the ancient Greek sculpture made of marble and now on display at the Louvre. Is there any marble in your home?  I have a couple of marble lamps that I found in a resale shop in the 70's,  a tiny marble sculpture that my Bee made one summer, and there's some marble in the rock pile.  I love marble.    

3) He refers to his girl as "Mona Lisa with a pony tail." The Mona Lisa is also at the Louvre. What's the last museum you visited?  San Francisco's de Young ..  

4) This girl is so awesome, she's the 8th Wonder of the World! Without looking it up, could you name the other 7?  I can try.  I don't remember much about them anymore.  I do remember that there are actually  "the7 wonders of the Ancient World", "Seven Wonders of the Natural World"... Etc... Here goes nothing!

Well, as we all know, "Wonder" is in the eye, and brain, of the beholder.  heehee

5) Jimmy Clanton spent his entire professional life behind a microphone. After he quit selling records, he began spinning them as a DJ. Do you consider the sound of your voice one of your better qualities?  Not anymore! haha  I sound like a harridan!  Having a nearly deaf hubby will do that. 

6) At age 80, Mr. Clanton still performs. He averaged an appearance/month in 2018. Some of his fans were surprised that he has let his pompadour go completely white. Do you color your hair?  No.  When I was in my 60's I dyed it one time.  The effort got raves but Gee... what a pain in the neck it was to do.  Now, it would be pointless.  Nothing can make me look 45 again.  

7) In 1962, when this song was popular, Americans were reading about 5-year-old First Daughter, Caroline Kennedy, and her pony, Macaroni. Tell us about a pet you had when you were very young.  My pets, when I was very young, and even up into my teens, had a habit of "disappearing".  It's not a happy memory.  I think that's why I'm totally GAGA over pets now.

8) Decades later, Caroline Kennedy was the first woman to serve as US Ambassador to Japan. Have you ever been to Asia?  No.

9) Random question: When talking among themselves, who do you think is more open and honest about sex -- men or women?  I don't have any thoughts about this one way or the other.  I would guess it to be women if I had to hazard a guess.

    Last time you saw your mother When she visited me in the Fall of 1983.  She wore her "Chinesey" (her word)" robe, a beautiful Orange silk "find" at a thrift store.  Mother was a great Thrift Store Maven.  The early morning light coming in through the great-room windows made it positively Glow.  That's the last time I saw her alive. 

    Have you ever talked to a person named Tom   Such a strange question.  And yes, I have.  I knew this person rather well, too.  For quite awhile he was a regular in our lives.  Then, as happens, he floated away on the tide one day never to return.

    Most visited Webpages The New York Times because I subscribe, and after that it's to the weekend memes with all the faithful posters here.. Meaning the blogs owned by the  Saturday Niners and the Sunday Thieves.  

    Will you be celebrating Fathers day? No, we have stopped doing this because all of our parents are dead, and our kids are far away.  When we happen to be in their town on the day, our girls  always make it special for Mr. Z.  It's sweet.

    When did you first realize you were an adult? When I finally kicked my PsycoDad out of my life.  I was 18, and this was well before 18 year olds were adults in the eyes of the law.

1) This song is a duet by the father/daughter team, Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus. Is your family musically inclined?  My Grandparents were singers of old world ballads from the Hills, and some Western.  They, mostly my grandpa, taught me to sing just by osmosis, I guess.  They are the only people in my family who sang, I mean besides my mother, aunts and cousins.  I sang until my voice didn't sound good to me anymore.
Edited to add... I was writing in a fog yesterday.  My one twin daughter plays guitar, banjo and violin - Irish and Old timey music.  And both the twins play piano.  

2) This song is about life lessons. Who has been a major influence on your life?
My maternal grandparents, my paternal grandmother, my aunts and uncles, and my sweet hubby.
 
3) Miley's given name is "Destiny." Her nickname as a baby was "Smiley," which is where Miley came from. What's something that can always be depended upon to make you smile?
Puppies, kittens and little Kids!

4) Miley's father, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, has 5 children in addition to Miley (6 in all). Are you the oldest, the middle or the youngest sibling? Or are you an only child?
I am the Eldest of four children, three of us are still living.  

 
5) Sam's own father often traveled for business, and always remembered to bring her the little complimentary soaps, shampoos or body lotion he got from the hotel. Tell us about an inexpensive but treasured souvenir from a trip you've taken.

Comb is to show you the size

 We always camped out with the kids, from the time our first and second daughters were babies.  We camped out when we had a 15 month old and a 3 month old.  And, since I didn't have a wisk broom, Mr. Z made this pine needle one for me to clean the picnic tables with.  It is a treasured reminder of days gone by.  It's been all over the West with us.  But now, it stays home.  It's a reminder that, no matter what, a handy fella is nice to have around.
 
6) Back when Sam was in high school, it was her father who gave her driving lessons. Are you patient when teaching someone something new?
Since I got married, I am again.  According to my aunts, I started out to be very patient.  Psycho Dad pretty much ruined all three of his kids for patience.  But my mother was patient, and I took after her. 
Also, once I was away from him and had met my hubby who is AMAZINGLY patient, that natural patience gradually came back.  It's the only way to teach anything because most kids or adults are just so much more driven, for whatever reason, and they are impatient with themselves.  Teachers need to be patient.
 
7) Sam's father is easy to buy for: every year he wants a new pair of loafers, so every year for Father's Day she gives him a DSW gift card. Is there anyone on your gift list that you find it easy to buy for?
I have no confidence in the gift giving category.  I'm just not very good at it.
 
8) For family barbecues, Sam's dad dons his "Kiss the Chef" apron and mans the Weber. What's the last thing you cooked on the grill?
I don't use the grill at all anymore.  Mr. Z still does.  We have cooked hamburgers, hotdogs, and whole turkeys on it for gatherings of the rock hounds though.  It's a Weber and runs on propane.  
 
9) Sam's father satisfies his afternoon sugar craving with an almost endless stream of Butter Rum Lifesavers. When you crave a snack, do you usually reach for something sweet or salty?
I'd rather have Salty snacks.

How to create a space, in your verbiage, without using the space bar.

Our thumbs simply wear out from all the stuff we are constantly subjecting them to, such as banging them down endlessly on a keyboard.   So, I went searching for solutions.

Here's one:
Turn on the NumLock key...hold down the alt key and type in 255..

Hey Presto! There is a way to use the right control key (Ctrl) but I haven't got to that one yet.

Sunday Stealing: Would You Rather?

My Apologies to Bev for this not looking right.. I'm writing it in a hurry and a flurry...

1. Would you rather be able to detect any lie you hear or get away with any lie you tell?
I would rather be able to detect any lie.  

2. Would you rather be a hopeless romantic or a hopeless unromantic?
I'd rather be hopeful either way... There's already a great sense of hopelessness floating around, and this day is very hard to deal with.  I'm writing this on Saturday, my daughter Elle's 55th birthday. 

3. Would you rather have too many friends or too few?
I don't think there is anything bad about having a lot of friends.  More than you know and more than you can keep in touch with.  Send them love through the Ether, the way we send love to Heaven....Tesla predicted it, and now Astrophysicists are starting to detect it.

4. Would you rather have no taste buds or be blind?
Since almost half of taste is in the ability to smell, I'd go with taste buds.  I'd rather not be blind.

5. Would you rather never hear music again or lose the ability to read?
These questions are fracking making me sad!  I can't really live life anymore without either one.

6. Would you rather find true love or be rich?
True love is so very rare that being rich is a no starter.  True love because money can't even buy happiness, and never could.  Look at most of the selfish rich people that have come out of the woodwork.

7. Would you rather be the richest person or the smartest?
The Smartest.. No one needs any more than a sufficiency of all good things.  Just ask the most vociferous Christians if that isn't so.  (that was a joke.) I'm a bit sick of it all at the moment.

8. Would you rather create history or delete it?
I'm sorry, I can't see the logic in this question.

9. Would you rather create a great piece of art and not get credit or get credit for a piece of art you didn't create?  *Runs, Screaming, to the hills* Of course I don't want to take creative credit for any art that belongs to someone else.  And I would probably SUE THE ASS of someone to keep control over my own work.  

10. Would you rather age from the neck up, or from the neck down.
Since the Brain is in the top part, I'd choose the neck down.  But the more science delves, the more it makes no sense to think either or on this- the body and the brain are co-dependents.  
But then, I suppose you could look 20 years old again if the FACE is the most important part of  your assessment.  I'm conflicted.....Because I so obviously don't give a rats arse about my face.

11. Would you rather see the world but live in poverty or stay in one place and live rich?
I think this is a dilemma.  So many in so little time!  I don't want to see the world, only parts of it.  Most of them are in developed countries, unless you go to Cancun or something.  You know, a place where they moved all the fishermen out into poverty so that multi-million dollar high rises for the rich could be built.  And, no, I never forget a Dad-blame thing! 

12. Would you rather become famous or powerful?
Since I get to choose between two odious alternatives, I can only say,  powerful in what way?  God like powers?  Then yes.. 
As to "Famous" my first question is, "Like Whom?"  Would that be like Getty, Trump or Idy Amin?  

13. Would you rather be a creative person or a technical person?
I am a creative, technical person already.

14. Would you rather get a paper cut whenever you touch paper or bit your tongue whenever you eat something?  I choose paper.  I could just always wear gloves.  Tongue ?  There is no way I want to bite my tongue every time I eat something.

15. Would you rather wake up in the morning looking like a giraffe or a kangaroo?
Cute... I'd rather wake up in the morning looking Cute.

16. Would you rather speak "whale" or read babies' minds.
I don't see that many Whales on a daily basis, so I'd rather read babies' minds.  I was such a clueless mother!

17. Would you rather eat pizza every day or never eat pizza again?
I can eat focaccia.  That takes care of the dilemma of having to eat Pizza every day..

18 Would you rather stay forever at your current age or be 10 years younger?
Forever Young?   I want to die before any more of my children do.

1) In this song, Chyvonne Scott sings that she's sick of her lover's "conniving." Tell us about a time you felt deceived. (It doesn't have to involve romance.)
I was a young wife.  I saw someone I knew well, who stared back at me from the jump seat of a motorcycle.  Her face was almost hidden by the helmet.  She just looked calmly at me as her husband pulled away.  You never forget a face, do you? It was an omen.

2) She realizes it's time to move on to another love. What's your favorite love song? Is it about a relationship that's running smoothly? Or is it like "I'm Moving On," about an unhappy love affair?

It's been a Happy one.  I feel very, very blessed, coming from the childhood I endured.  

3) Though Chyvonne Scott enjoyed only limited success as a recording artist, she was very popular in New York clubs. When did you most recently listen to music performed live?
Probably five years ago.  There used to be concerts at a sweet little church in North Park.  But the venue moved too far away, and it was sent to a place I hated to be in...

4) In 2017, this song appeared on a Samsung commercial that poked fun at rival iPhone. Is your cell phone an Apple or Android? How did you choose your phone?
I started out with a flip phone, the technology of which I still miss.  It had a fabulous camera in it.  It was called "a camera with a phone in it" by most people.  
Apple made our second and this last cell.  We chose it for it's features.  Now I think I'd get a Samsung.  Better features and camera. 
There, is that convoluted enough for a winning vote in the "trick answer" category? 

5) Chyvonne is an unusual name. In 1965, when this song was first released, the most popular baby names in the US were Michael and Lisa. Do you have any Michaels or Lisas in your life?
Just One.  

6) Also in 1965, Winston Churchill died. In researching this week's Sat. 9, Sam discovered a Churchill quote that's new to her: "I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught." Share something interesting that you recently learned.
I've learned the incredible tenacity of misinformation on the web.  There are so many people posing as knowledgeable about something, say, in Human migrations and Anthropology, and getting others to chime in with their own misinformation.  They even put up maps and diagrams!
It beggars the imagination. 

7) In 1965, one of the most successful movies ever made, The Sound of Music, was released. Have you ever seen it?
I have, and I loved it.  The fact that Christopher Plummar called it "The Sound of Mucus" doesn't stop me from loving it. lol.  That guy is hilarious.  He's such a curmudgeon. 🤣 😂  Oh!  Did any of you see the movie, "All The Money in the World"?  He really NAILED the part of J.P. Getty.  

8) Lava lamps were already popular in England and Brussels, but in 1965 they were introduced in the US. Do you think lava lamps are cool? 
I came of age in 1960, so yes, I like them and think they are cool.  I'm going to buy one of the new ones, very soon. Like.... as soon as I'm off the computer.

9) Random question -- You have to buy something very personal that you find embarrassing. Would you rather pay cash for it, so your identity would be unknown but you'd have to face the cashier? Or order it online, where you could avoid looking anyone in the eye, but you have to share your name and address?
Hmmmm...  😏  The only things that I consider very personal are undergarments, and isn't that why Victoria's Secret is so popular?  I'd probably buy with a credit card.  I don't carry folding money anymore - fifteen pounds of quarters, nickles and dimes but no foldables. lol

The Movie Questions

What was you first movie-going experience without your parents?
We would earn a quarter, each, for doing various chores during the week, and then my bro and I would go to the Saturday matinee to watch the latest "Oater", a word that I learned late in life from the cross word puzzles.

Do you still buy DVDs or Blu Rays (or do you just stream them)?
I do all three.  And, because there are some movies that can't be gotten anywhere, though I have them on aging VCR tapes, I still watch tapes.  Milagro Beanfield War, my favorite movie, isn't on any of the other things.

What is your guilty pleasure movie? What about it works for you?
Do you mean like a kid's movie that you shouldn't be caught dead in a million years watching?  That would be "How to Train Your Dragon", or "Avatar", with "Brave" being a very close third.  I love animation, but only the Pixar stuff, not the strange stuff.  

You have compiled a list of your top 10 movies. Which movies do you like, but would not make the list?
I love movies as much or sometimes more than I love books.  It's an art form.  The list is longer than my arm, the ones that wouldn't be included in the top ten.  I'll do maybe three for you..  "True Grit", "Fargo" and "Nightmare Before Christmas". 

Which movie(s) do you compulsively watch over and over again? What makes it so great?
There are two, actually,  Passion Fish, and Cold Comfort Farm.  They are both just wacky enough and sweet enough, and have great stories and acting,  to watch over and over.. I mean once a year of so.. the actor who plays Gandolf is in Cold Comfort Farm.

Classic(s) you’re embarrassed to admit you haven’t seen yet?
You all know by now that I have never seen "Gone With the Wind, but I'm not embarrassed in anyway to have not.  I'm an American.  I don't have to conform, even to "cultural norms". Lol

Do you have any movie posters hanging on your wall? If yes, which ones and why?

Tell us about a movie that you are passionate about.
I save being "Passionate" for real life.  This is just a statement and not in anyway a judgement of others.  I just don't HAVE any passion for fiction, other than to snivel and cry when someone dies in it.

What is a movie you vow to never watch? Why?
Anything with a chain saw in it.  The "Why" of this must be self evident.

Tell us about a movie that literally left you speechless.
This has never happened.

What’s a movie that you always recommend?
That would be, "Moon Over Parador".  It's screamingly funny, especially the Gangster played by Raul Julia.

Who is an actor you always watch, no matter how crappy the movie?
Meryl Streep.

Who is an actor you don’t get the appeal for? Why don’t you like them?
Pass....

Who is an actor, living or dead, you’d love to meet? Why do they intrigue you? 
Meryl Streep or Helen Mirren.  It's not a matter of intrigue, it's because of the amazing variety of their roles and talent.

This question is so obviously above my pay grade.  I'll pass.  I don't know the new "kids" and the old ones are practically geriatric, like me.  If you want a bunch of actors who work well together in a movie, check out the whole series of Oceans.  Well, maybe not that prequel. 

Which are your favorite actor pairings of all time?
Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.  Buhahahaha!  

Have you ever watched movies from a decade that was before you were born? If so, which decade is your favorite?  
You are talking about backward into the 1930's and 20's m' Lass, and there's not a lot back there.  Tom Mix?  Movies made before the 1940's were silly.  Except, that is, for the westerns which were both silly and fun.  I guess I liked the westerns best. After all I was a horse crazy little kid back then who lived on a farm. 

If you were to be in a movie would you rather play the hero, villain or anti-hero? Why?.
Not being sure what an Anti-Hero is without looking it up, I'll go with villain.  and the reason is that villains are oft times the real heroes. And now that I've looked up Anti-hero, I'll go with that instead.  The reason is that they are the most interesting thing to play.  And, I'm basically an anti-social scofflaw in real life.

1) Ricky Nelson laments that he should have been home hours ago. When is the last time you stayed up later than you should have? What were you doing?
Trying to get tired enough to go to sleep.

2) Compounding Ricky's problem is that he's nearly out of gas. How is your gas tank right now? When did you most recently fill 'er up?
Usually we have to fill up once a week.  I think it's whenever the little warning light goes on.

3) It gets worse! He can't call home because he doesn't have a dime for the pay phone. Have you recently been in a situation where you've been glad you had your cell phone handy?
Oh yes.  I keep it close, not so much for calls but to hear texts come in.

4) The video for this song is from an episode of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Ozzie Nelson, Ricky's father, was in charge of the show and made the rules. One was that no one was allowed to smoke on the set ... except his wife, Harriet. Do you smoke? Have you ever lived with a smoker?
I don't smoke.  I lived with a smoker for 19 years .. my mother.

5) Life magazine coined the phrase "teen idol" to describe Ricky's popularity. According to Tiger Beat, today's teen idols include Johnny Orlando and Ruby Jay. Johnny was born in 2003, Ruby in 2004. Sam admits that before today, she had no idea who these young people are. How about you? 
I don't know who they are either.  I feel like I'm in good company, Gal. 

6) While Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan have posthumously praised Ricky Nelson's music, 1950s music critics dismissed him as a lightweight. What's the last review you read? Was it written by a professional critic, or was it contributed by a consumer to a site like Amazon or Yelp?  The last review I read was probably from Amazon, and an amateur wrote it.  I sometimes read those reviews if there is a fictional novel Amazon is cutting the price on.  I need more fiction in life at the moment, the harmless kind, not the kind that brings us to the brink of war in rl.

7) At the height of his popularity, Ricky tried his hand at movies, appearing in the western Rio Bravo with John Wayne. He turned 18 during the filming, and Wayne celebrated by playfully throwing Ricky into a sack of horse manure. Do you think pranks and practical jokes are funny?  I think that some can be, but that most are not .. funny that is. April Fool's aside, I think that most practical jokes entertain the meanness in us.  

8) In 1959, when this song was popular, the St. Lawrence Seaway was completed. It connects Canada to our Great Lakes. Without looking it up, can you name all 5 Great Lakes? Let's see... Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Great Lake, Lake Ontario, Lake Michigan.  If those are wrong, sorry, then I can't do it! lol  To be fair, they come up a lot in cross words, my major source of mental stimulation aside from Pinterest and Instagram.
