Saturday 9: All of Me (1932)

1) In this song, Louis Armstrong calls his girl "baby." What's the last endearment someone used when speaking to you?  

Some one called me "Sweetheart".  I think it was an Italian guy, maybe a God Father? ... lol (just kidding about who it was) . 

 

2) He sings that losing his love made him cry. Do you cry easily?

I can't help crying a lot.  It's just the way it is. So, Yes, you could say that I cry easily.

 

3) Louis was born in New Orleans, a city famous for music and cuisine. What's something you love about your home town?

I'm a war baby, born on a farm, so I really don't have a hometown, though I was conceived in Hollywood, California. Does that count?

The long explanation: 

When Dad went to intensive training for Signal Corps after boot camp. This was because he spoke four languages and they needed guys with this skills.  The signal corps did "behind enemy lines" sorts of things, and so.....

my Mom moved back home. 

 

I was born on her parent's farm.  She didn't leave there until I was old enough to travel

(a couple of months) whereupon we rejoined Dad at his army camp, to live on base with him in Louisiana where he was being trained. 

They lived on an army base when I was tiny, and when he shipped out for overseas, she went back home to her parent's farm in Ohio, where I had been born about 7 months earlier.   

 
4) At age 11, Louis unwisely fired a pistol during a New Year's Eve celebration and was sentenced to 18 months in a juvenile detention facility. It was there that he met music teacher Peter Davis, who believed in Louis and taught him to play cornet and bugle. Tell us about someone who believed in you and made your life better. 18 MONTHS?!? Geeze!  At least something excellent came of it. But that was sheer good luck. God Bless Peter Davis!

 

As to the question:  

I have to say my three Language teachers in High School took a special interest in me, and then again in college, this was taken up by my English Lit prof, Western Civ prof, and my Geology Prof.  They all had a big, positive effect on my life.  They seemed to know just how poor my family was, and they treated me to a confidence in myself that I'd never had before. 

 

An Aside:  I mean my little car was "repoed" from the parking lot at college!  Sheesh! I was talking over a paper with my teacher at the time and spotted them towing my car!  I said, "I have to get my books out of the trunk, Prof R!" 

How embarrassing was that?  Dad would get me a vehicle as a "gift", and then either sell it to someone else, or stop paying for it after presenting it to me.  Well. you get the picture. If that was the worst thing he ever did to his kids, it would actually be funny.

 

5) Louis would say that arrest changed his life for the better because it was at the detention center that "me and music got married." After his release, he began playing on street corners, or in honky tonks ... any place he could hone his skills. What is something you have worked hard to be better at?  Forgiving, both myself and other people, and also learning to love unconditionally.

6) In the late 1920s, Louis led a jazz band called The Hot Five. His wife, Lil, believed he was too talented not to receive star billing. He just didn't feel ready. She went behind his back and convinced the management at Chicago's Dreamland Cafe to advertise: "The Hot Five, featuring Louis Armstrong: The World's Greatest Trumpet Player." It worked! At the end of the gig, Okeh Records signed him to a recording contract. Can you think of a time when, like Lil, you were glad you asked for forgiveness rather than permission?  I had a parental unit who was hyper controlling.  I'm glad that I ignored him and kept seeing my husband-to-be when he and I first had met. 

Not to put too fine a point on my life up until then, my dad was a total bastard.  

Mom said it wasn't the war that did it, as he'd been that way before... *Zippi shoots down that canard*

7) In 1932, the year this record was popular, the son of aviator Charles Lindbergh was kidnapped and killed. This famous case inspired Agatha Christie to write Murder on the Orient Express. Have you read the book? Seen the movie, the remake or the miniseries? I just finished re-reading the book, and I've seen the movie a couple of times.  I want to see the one with David Suchet in it, again. Also....I found the remake the other day, and yes, I'm thinking of watching it, too.  However, I'm not sure about the actor playing Poirot. K. Branagh is a great actor but can he be as good as David Suchet.  We'll see, won't we?!

8) Another aviator was in the news in 1932. Amelia Earhart flew 14 hours from Newfoundland to Londonderry. What is the longest flight you've ever taken? 

The longest one has to be the one to Denver one year. I flew out to see hubby when he was in school in Colorado.

9) Random question: You have the opportunity to travel safely in a time machine. Would you go back to the past, into the future, or say, "no thanks, I'll stay in 2022?"

A few years ago I'd have said into the past.  I know my daughter's life could have been spared .. I am not interested in the future.. but, now, for either case... I say.... "Let it Be" 

 

I'm certain, without a shadow of doubt in my head, that my sweet girl dwells in the House of the Lord, and that she is happy.

 

And yes, for the record, I sniffled and wiped my eyes all the way through this...

1) Melissa Etheridge sings this song as though her heart is breaking. What's your favorite love song? Is it about falling in love, being in love, or losing love?

2) "I'm the Only One" is a favorite song of American Idol contestants, having been performed four different times. If we were to have a Saturday 9 karaoke night, what song would you do?

A question last week got me thinking about songs in other languages that I sing along with in albums I own.  This album is one I now hum because my voice is so .. er...unreliable these days.  If no one else is around, I just BELT IT OUT! 

3) A rocker at heart, Melissa Etheridge began her career in her teen years, playing with local country groups. Which do you enjoy more: country or rock?  

I'm too much in love with both genres to pick. Music is lovely when you have a vast choice to fill your ears and soul with. 

4) In 1985, Melissa sent a demo to Olivia Records, hoping for a record deal. She was rejected. Her debut CD was released in 1988 on the Island label and went gold. Tell us about a time you bounced back from professional adversity. 

I've never held a professional position. 

5) In her personal life, Melissa has faced major challenges, including breast cancer and the death of her son. She credits music with helping her heal emotionally. What gives you strength?

My faith that,  in the end, it matters when you believe in a Celestial being more powerful than any "Fickle Finger of Fate". *With a little a nod to Laugh-in* 

6) Melissa is a vegetarian, so her diet emphasizes plant-based foods like fruits, grains, nuts and vegetables. What was your most recent meal? Would it qualify as vegetarian?

Yogurt with blueberries. I would qualify as a vegetarian if I didn't have to eat some meat.  Even the Dalai Lama has been asked by his doctors - Tibetan ones- to eat a little meat. So I bent a little though I will never, ever eat Beef again. So.... I eat a little bison, and a little chicken, as well as a couple ounces of Tuna from time to time.

7) In 1993, the year this song was popular, a massive storm dropped a record 56" of snow in Mount Le Conte, TN. Have you done much shoveling this winter?  

Not unless we go up to the mountains and play in the snow. I regret not getting a cabin up there in the early days when things like that were affordable.  

8) One of the most popular movies of 1993 was A Few Good Men, starring Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Jack Nicholson, who famously said, "You can't handle the truth!" What's the most recent movie you watched?  

We watched a movie last night that I really loved.  It's a memoir... The Tender Bar.  It's written by JR Moehringer.  He is a writer who grew up without a father, because his dad was an abusive Bully, a Clown and a Loser.  His momma, maternal uncle, aunts and grumpy grand dad raised him.  

9) Random question: Dessert is on us! Describe your perfect ice cream sundae.  I don't like them but I do like this.. and it's my favorite dessert.  I get to have it about once a year well three times if you get a whole pie for two people.....

Sometimes I wake up to texts sent at 2 a.m. Sometimes they’re from Meg, who lives in Scotland and is several time zones ahead, telling us her 4-year-old woke up with a fever. Sometimes Kea, who lives in Maine, was up overnight with her 2-year-old. More texts come through the day in trickles and floods, in the group chat that’s been our support group since we were all pregnant at the same time. How’s your back? How’s your kid’s earache? How long did they tantrum for today? Make sure to swab their throat!

I get up, I make my own toddler breakfast. My husband drives him to day care. I text my friends back, I try to get to work. And I wait.

Apparently not. I was chasing my son around the house this weekend—literally, he runs laps to a playlist of four 30-second songs from Blaze and the Monster Machines, and he insists that one of us adults runs with him—when I saw the news: The Moderna vaccine trial for kids under 5 was being extended. Extended and delayed. And I felt like I’d been punched in the chest. I wandered off from the racetrack while Blaze kept blaring and hoped my son didn’t notice while I searched my phone for answers.

The worst part, maybe, was that this wasn’t even a press release. It wasn’t even big news. My colleague (with whom I was texting just this morning about her son’s latest fever; the network of parent support is diffuse and desperate) pointed out that we only found this out at all because a co­–principal investigator on the Moderna clinical trials told a local Wisconsin news outlet, and someone else noticed and tweeted about the extended timeline for the study. January was no more. Now it was April. The worst part might be that no one even thought to officially announce it."

 And, since I lived through the whole of Polio from a small child until the second year of high school, I can tell you candidly, that my mother almost lost her mind worrying about her children.  She would shake when we told her we were feeling this or that when we felt ill. I can understand the FEAR parents go through, because EVERY child is not going to be sick, but you do NOT want to LOSE yours by some act of WANTON FATE that doesn't care who it strikes, or when.

IF YOU CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO GET VACCINATED, THEN STAY IN YOUR OWN HOUSE AND AWAY FROM OTHER PEOPLE'S LITTLE ONES BECAUSE YOU COULD POTENTIALLY GIVE THEM COVID AND KILL THEM.  

THE ODDS MEAN NOTHING TO A MOTHER WATCHING HER CHILD DIE BECAUSE YOU WERE AN IDIOT.

1) In this song, Marcie Blane confesses she sits at home, hoping Bobby will call her. Do you owe anyone a phone call or email?  I've been AFK for a while, from my emails.  My sister usually calls me every Monday but she hasn't  for the last couple of weeks. Maybe I should call her? 

2) We know Marcie wants to be Bobby's Girl. Let's play the Google Game and find out what you want. Go to your favorite search engine, keystroke your name and "wants," and then search. (For example: "Samantha wants" led us to a math problem that begins: "Samantha wants to purchase a new dress ... " Crazy Sam      

 was tempted to read on because her wardrobe could use sprucing up.) What does Google tell us you want?  I seemingly want for Nothing.  

However, Google wanted me to read an article from Artisan's Guild about Tetrachromats. My sister and I took a test for it once; we found out that we have it.  I think it's a Native American trait. I married a man who is partially color blind, but our daughters are like me.  See how that works? ;o)

3) This hit record was an accident. Marcie Blaine had just graduated from high school and had a few days before she had to take off for her summer job as a camp counselor. A friend asked her to record a couple songs he'd written, just so he could play them for record labels and song publishers. Her friend was hoping somehow an established star would hear the songs, record them and make one of them a hit. Instead, a producer at Seville Records said he wanted not just the songs but especially the unknown girl who was singing them, and Marcie became a recording artist. Tell us about a favor you're very glad you did for a friend.  That is a beautiful story!   

To answer the question: I'm always glad to do a favor for a friend.  I made two pairs of short fingered gloves for a friend's dear wife.  She is in chemo.  People in chemo have a heck of a time keeping warm enough.  I still make sf gloves for the chemo patients at Elle's clinic, but covid19 - and a broken elbow and shoulder - has somewhat messed it all up. I'm getting back on tract.

4) By the time summer was over, and Marcie's gig as a counselor was done, she was #3 on the charts. Her record stayed in the "Hot 100" for 19 weeks and, for the second half of 1962, she was the top-selling female singer in the US. What female singer do you listen to most often? Mostly Barbra Streisand and a good bit of Bette Mettler.

 
5) After "Bobby's Girl" took off, she recorded it in German for the European market. Only she didn't speak German, so she sang it phonetically. Can you sing any songs in a language other than English? Most singers do this.  I've been a singer since I was a tot.  So, I have learned songs in Italian, Spanish, German and, strangely, a few in Japanese.  If you are a singer, you'll learn a lot of songs phonetically - or in other words - by ear.

6) Seville rushed Marcie into the studio to make more records. None of them charted higher than #68, and Marcie wasn't having fun. After a year of being a rock 'n roller, she enrolled at Queens College in New York City. What's the most recent class you took?  Art History. Ages ago.

7) In 1962, when this song was popular, the most popular baby names were Michael and Lisa. Are there any Michaels or Lisas in your life?  There are no Lisa's but there's now one Michael. 

8) Also in 1962, Marlene White, the first African American flight attendant for a major US airline, appeared on the cover of Jet magazine. What's the last magazine you flipped through? Was it in print or online?  That would be an Audubon Magazine, in print.

9) Random Question: After enjoying a long, relaxing weekend, do you find yourself more or less productive on Monday morning?  Since being retired, weekends don't exist for me anymore.  There are no weekends.

A Skywatcher Post...and I am Tired, as in “tired to the bone”.

Hiya. 👋🏻Yo-yo Mama here....

Are you tired of sharing this incredibly beautiful planet with others who don’t care about it. Are you thinking we are failed species?  Will God just flick us off of it into Space, as one Indian Astrophysicist, being interviewed for Nova, said could happen? 

I never forgot that fellow. It would be quick anyway.  Can we take our pets? To hell with the money or mother’s pearls.  I want my pets not to be left behind. I’ll even take everyone else’s pets, too! 

I read  THIS page about the USA and France in Africa.  🤭😳  Then last tonight we watched a British film titled,  “Eye in the Sky” starring Helen Mirren. So, please tell me why we are helping France to hold on to power....again?  This time it’s in Africa?  Why we are “helping” colonial powers?  

Then I  thought about General  Smedley Butler who gave a speech called, “War is a Racket”,  and  then wrote a book called the same, in the 1930’s.  

I think I’ll  just go watch the beautiful sky.  Then I’ll take a big wand to go blow soap bubbles at Trescony Gardens.  I’ll watch the Eternal Sea from a rocky coastline near here.  And I’ll post sky watcher posts ...

It's interesting and if you like cooking, this is a fun and informative little read.  It was double interesting to me because I really missed being able to cook in my beautiful new kitchen, which came far too late in life for me to enjoy it.

 I once owned a little Simca, and drove it to school and work. Mine was a nice, dark green. It was the first car that I bought with my own money. Meaning that the *paternal unit* couldn't sell it out from under me, nor could he borrow against it and lose it.

Saturday 9: Moody Blue (1977)

1) This song was recorded in the special studio Elvis had built in the Jungle Room of Graceland. During the pandemic, have you made like Elvis and worked from home?  No, I have not. Formerly, when I was selling crafts, I worked AT home but not now, and not a current job.

2) Elvis sings that his girl is completely unpredictable. Which quality to you find more attractive: spontaneity or dependability?  Dependability.

3) He only performed the song once in concert. In February 1977, shortly after the record was released, Elvis sang "Moody Blue" live in Charlotte, NC, but had to rely on lyric sheet. Crazy Sam can sympathize because she seems to forget passwords as soon as she sets them. Do you often struggle with your memory?  If I've used it enough, I can remember pretty complicated passwords.  As a singer, I had to remember long complicated songs.  That may have helped me.

4) "Moody Blue" was the final hit of Elvis' lifetime, only getting to #31 in the US but reaching #3 in the UK. What's your favorite Elvis song?  This one: "Suspicious Minds".

 

Though I do like the one from the recording studio best. Except of course, where he does that world famous maneuver of the side leg stretch and sings, "soto voce", "Sure Hope this suit don't tear out".  LOL!  Love the King! 

5) We're focusing on Elvis this week because January 8 would be his 87th birthday. He enjoyed celebrating his birthday by renting the Memphis movie theater and watching the latest movie with an invited group of friends. What's your favorite way to celebrate your birthday?  With my family, going out to get a meal at an Italian Restaurant.

6) For his 11th birthday, young Elvis asked for a rifle or a bicycle. His mother deemed the gun too dangerous and the bike too expensive and instead gave her son his first guitar. Tell us about a memorable birthday from your youth. Mother always baked a cake for us, and one year she bought me a "Moss Rose" tea set when I was maybe 14.  How she did these things was amazing.  She must have saved a long time for it.

7) Elvis loved horses and kept them in the stable at Graceland. His favorite was a palomino named Rising Sun. To honor both horse and rider, Elvis' daughter has always kept a palomino in the stable whose name includes "sun." The current resident is Tuscan Sun. Known as "Tucky," he's lived at Graceland for more than 20 years now and is a favorite of Alene Alexander, who maintains the stable and reports he has "attitude and knows he's prettier than everybody else." Tell us about an animal who holds a place in your heart.  Taffy was a little, golden short haired dog that I got as a puppy from a neighbor. I had her about two or three years before she just disappeared one day.  She will always be in my heart. I still wonder what happened to her but I'm pretty sure I know what did. 

8) Throughout his life, Elvis had trouble sleeping. As a preteen, he was a sleepwalker. As an adult, he battled insomnia. Is sleep an issue for you?  I had trouble sleeping as well.  I think it was because of stress.  Now I take naps.  Then and throughout a busy life as a mom, I just went with the sleep I could get, which was six hours usually. I am fine with that amount now, except, as I said, now I take naps.

9) Random question: Do you wear your shoes in the house?  We have tile floors, and yes, I wear my shoes in the house. I used to go bare footed EVERYwhere, but now not so much. If we had wooden floors, or carpets, we would have "house Shoes".
