What a beautiful voice and range she has and still has I believe.... Gorgeous!  

1) Is today a clear day where you are?

Yes.  It's a beautiful clear-blue-sky day

 

2) Streisand sings that today she's "astounded."  What has recently shocked or greatly surprised you?  Recently? That nearly the Entirety of Europe has stood up to Putin.  I think the proverbial Gauntlet is now DOWN, Baby!

3) Streisand's voice astounded people from an early age. She began performing in New York clubs when she was only 18, too young to order a drink in the establishments where she sang. Do you remember the first adult beverage you ordered at a restaurant or bar?  I was underage, on a blind date with my friend, her betrothed, and his friend.  The drink was something called a "Seagram's 'N' Seven".  I had a few of them. lol  Delicious. This was long ago and far away.  They didn't I.D. every single person in that Era. 

4) Barbra has discussed the importance of her Jewish faith in her life and has enlisted the guidance of Reform, Conservative and and Orthodox rabbis as she explored her religion's complexities. Do you enjoy discussing religion? Enjoy?  Hmmm...YEs, I reckon..  I'm one of those seemingly off the wall sects, being a Quaker, and  as such we accept EVERY other religion as both relevant and healing to a soul that practices it, as well as a comfort.  I always like to listen to the Holy ones, like Monks or Nuns, Rabbis and Mullahs and just any other truly peaceful religious person.  I find that it's healing, and comforting as well as enlightening.  

5) Taylor Swift just passed Barbra Streisand as the woman with the most #1 albums (12). What's the last album you purchased?  James Taylor's Latest Hits: Volume Two.  I'm going to get volume one soon. 

 6) The lyrics to "On a Clear Day" were written by Alan Jay Lerner. He attended Choate, a private boarding school in CT, at the same time as John F. Kennedy. While JFK was in the White House, Lerner had two major Broadway hits -- Camelot and My Fair Lady -- running concurrently. Obviously those two Choate alumni did very well. Have you been to any of your class reunions? Have you been surprised, pleasantly or less so, by how any of your classmates turned out?  I've never gone.  And I have no idea how any of the classmates turned out except for the two or three of my Besties crowd that I kept in touch with for several years.  

7) The music was written by Burton Lane. In the 1930s, Lane worked for MGM Studios in Hollywood. After he heard Judy Garland perform at the Paramount Theater in Los Angeles, he brought her to the attention of his studio bosses and the rest, as they say, is history. Lane and Garland later worked together when Judy was an established star. He wrote the song, "How About You?" for her to sing in Babes on Broadway and received an Oscar nomination. Judy's best known movie has to be The Wizard of Oz. How many times have you seen it?  My two older kids and I loved that movie and we pretty much watched it every Halloween when they were smaller.

8) In 1970, Glenn Frey formed the Eagles. What's your favorite Eagles song? "Desperado"

AND...since Bob Seger is my favorite Eagle, here is one of his songs with his own band.

9) Random question: Which would upset you more, being trapped in an elevator or stranded atop a mountain in a ski lift?  That depends on the time of day.  Late at night I would rather be in the elevator.  Earlier, I'd rather be stranded on the Ski lift.  That doesn't answer the question though, does it?  hehe

1) This song likens a relationship to a roller coaster ride. When did you most recently visit an amusement park?  I've only been to two, Knott's Berry Farm. I was there with my Aunts from Ohio when I was about 12 years old. The year before that, Mother took all her own kiddies the to newly opened Disneyland. 

2) Lead singer Mark McGrath reasons that his girl should answer the phone because he knows she's home. That was decades ago, when most homes still had landlines. Where were you when you took your last call? Were you at home? Yes.

3) He remembers the glow of her face when he gave her a rose. Have you recently given or received a gift of flowers or a plant? No, I have not.  It used to be once a week, with the flowers coming from the farmer's markets that we used to have here. Covid 19 sort of wrecked a lot of things.

4) Sugar Ray's debut CD was called Lemonade and Brownies. Crazy Sam admits she'd prefer milk with her brownie. What about you? Does the combination of lemonade and brownies sound good to you?  Lol, not at all!  I can't even eat an orange with a date, for instance. 

5) In 2005, Mark McGrath was a guest judge on American Idol. At one time, Idol was the dominant singing competition show. Today, in addition to American Idol, viewers can also watch The Voice and America's Got Talent. Are you a fan of any or all of these shows?  I like both American Idol, and The Voice, mostly on YouTube when researching something.  Fan? No, but I absolutely LOVE  that new talent gets to showcase their amazing vocal skills.  There is so much talent out there!

6) Sugar Ray is a famous name in boxing circles. Sugar Ray Robinson and  Sugar Ray Leonard were both world championships. Are you a boxing fan? I was... once.. Not anymore. But I did see Ali's Golden Gloves fights.  My paternal unit was a fan, so the whole family watched the Friday Night Fights and the Golden Gloves ones. 

7) In 2001, when this song was popular, the Leaning Tower of Pisa reopened to the public after more than a decade of renovations. Have you ever been to Italy? If yes, where did you go? If not, is a trip to Italy on your wish list?  Never had the pleasure of traveling there or anywhere in Europe though it was on my list for after graduation from college.  My life is a little bit er well a LOT like the line in the poem.. what is it?  Robert Burns "....the Best Laid Schemes of Mice and Men...".   I have been into Mexico many times after we moved down the coast to Hub's Home town. There is a great surfing spot down along the Baja Coast. It used to be a quiet little fishing village.  You could buy fresh caught fish for your dinner.  That's all changed now. 

8) Also in 2001, Liverpool's Speke Airport was renamed John Lennon Airport. Liverpool's is the first airport in the United Kingdom to be named after an individual. Tell us about something in your hometown that is named after someone.  In actuality, I haven't got a home town.  I've lived in many places in Los Angeles County and in San Diego County. I'm Nomadic. lol

9) Random Question: Is the screen on your cell phone cracked?  Isn't everyone's?  Any who...mine got broken inside my purse when the phone  got caught between a rock and a hard place, so to speak.  It was shocking that Gorilla Glass could even DO that.

 Dear Readers:  Don't be alarmed.  I'm not mincing words on line anymore since it doesn't much matter what I say on Political matters.  

Little old ladies just get so tired of the buffooneries visited on the people they love.  By that I mean All Americans.  I love my country.  *waves a teeny tiny "Old Glory." *  

1) In this song, George Harrison tells us he's willing to devote his money, patience and time to his girlfriend. Of those three things, which can you most easily spare? 

Patience and time, most likely.  

2) This song had long been a favorite of George's. He first heard it in 1963 when visiting his sister in United States. He couldn't get the tune out of his mind and bought the record by James Ray. Do you have an earworm -- a song that, once you hear it, keeps repeating in your head?  I used to, but not anymore.

 

3) Months later, in February 1964, the Beatles made their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. 73 million viewers saw them, and an astonishing 45.3% of the TV sets in America were tuned in to the show. In addition to the Beatles, Ed Sullivan used his show to introduce Elvis, The Rolling Stones and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show ran for 23 years and reruns are now shown in syndication. Have you ever seen it? I've seen a lot of those shows, first at my mother's and then when I was expecting my first baby, and hubby worked the night shift.

4) While most of the best loved and most recognized Beatles songs were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, it was George who penned "Something." Frank Sinatra called that song "the greatest love song of the last 50 years." What's your favorite love song? 

"At Last", when it's sung by Etta Jones..  

5) This praise represented a big change for Frank, who predicted in 1964 that the Beatles would be "of no lasting importance." Tell us about something you have changed your mind about.  I had this ugly FEAR of another revolution which would be a disaster for our country and for the planet. I no longer think it will come to it.  Putin can play Russian Roulette with his own politburo if he wants a fight.  Well, you did ask. yes?  Otherwise I don't worry about anything else.  I want all the little ones to grow up and feel good about it all.  I know, good luck with that, Eh?  I'm nearly 81 and I don't mince my words much anymore.

6) Tom Petty, who went on to have more than 25 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, credits George Harrison as a major influence on his music. Tell us about someone who influenced your professional life.  I'll have to pass on this because since I never had a professional life.  No telling what my generation would have done with life if not for meat heads starting a war in Asia.  And they did a LAND war in Asia no less.  Duh! 

7) In 1987, when George's recording of "I Got My Mind Set on You" was popular, a squirrel unexpectedly made headlines. The furry fellow closed down the Nasdaq Stock Exchange when he chewed through a phone line. Do you often see squirrels where you live?  Yes,  they are everywhere, and I love the cheeky little boogers. 

 

8) Also in 1987, third generation race car driver Marco Andretti was born. Naturally the skills required by a race car driver are unique. For example, while we know he can control a car at upwards of 230 mph at Indy, we have no idea if Marco Andretti is good at parallel parking in front of the local post office. How about you? Do you struggle with parallel parking? Nope.  It's a special talent. lol  I've also eluded car thieves one dark and stormy night with my driving skills.   Good God, I think I need to get a stiff drink or something.  

9) Random question: When you woke up this morning, were you ready to face the day? Or do you wish you could have rolled over and snoozed a little longer? I always want to sleep more because I sleep so little as it is.

The New Thursday Thirteen.

 1.  I am so behind in everything. We had a water problem that has now been taken care of by the nicest pair of plumbers I've ever met, and that is saying a lot because all the plumbers before them were amazing also.

2. I've been reading far too much because of having to get library books instead of buying them on line to read on a kindle.  Crazy because the Kindle make the print BIG and has NO TIME LIMIT as long as you buy the book.  Only a modern times and cranky poster like me will admit to being in this conundrum.  I mean if that's even the right word.....

3. We are having Tacos for dinner.. Yay!

4.  Bought a copy of "Into the Woods".  If you haven't seen it, look it up because it is so nutty!  "Adult" but not "overly"  You won't have to explain to the little ones,  "But Mommy, what does she mean?", because it will be over their heads, and teens will be delighted at the innuendo.  The Prince is delicious.  And, that Witch is so fun and crazy!  It's a Musical, sort of, as they all sometimes sing....

5. Tacos tonight!  yes, it's still a "Yay!  But Flu shots tomorrow.  GAH!  But, actually, I will be glad we get them. 

6. The weather hasn't been too bad where we are, but as we know, that could change in a day or  two.  I hope that all of you are safe and haven't had an terrible weather.  

7. Two of the kids are coming in a few months to help their sort of crip old mamma sort her things and evict all the sewing room spiders.  I hope they also help their dear old Dad with that ginormous cactus in the back yard.  He cut it back last year and it retaliated by growing even FASTER!

8. I'm trying a sort of "sit and be fit" thing pretty soon.  MY core strength is nearly NIL.  And the rest of me is, too.  Knitting doesn't do much for it either.  Darn! If it were able, I'd be as strong as an OX!

9. Books.. physical ones like this need to be waded into and read.  I like this author so much.  I've read three of four of her books already but then I went into a 9 year funk and couldn't face that level of sadness.  Now I think I can do it.

10.  The little truck has a new home.  It will be going to it at Christmas.  I'm looking forward to it having a good home again.  And that it will be being driven.  It's been a wonderful little truck for me.  It  was once mine, all mine.

11. My sister told me that our brother is quite ill.  I haven't seen him face to face in ages.  We spoke on the phone several years.    

He was an amazing artist that didn't get a chance to have the life he wanted.  He is now a disabled Vet. I miss my madcap bro but he's been "gone" for a long, long time. 

12. Got a Gansey Pattern for ME from Knit Picks.  And.. just read a story about a sun bear rescue in Ukraine. See the story HERE

13.  I'm not happy that Covid is coming around again.  But I'm glad that there is an effort to crash the pandemic monster with a new vaccine.  Meanwhile, let’s punch out that flu bug!  KaPOW!

1) In this song, Jimmy Buffett briefly attempts a healthier diet, which included sunflower seeds, carrot juice, zucchini and bulgur wheat. Do you pay attention to your daily consumption of vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, etc.?  Yes.  And I also changed my diet to be almost totally meatless several years ago. 

2) Jimmy sings that he'd like french fries with his burger. Do you prefer to dip your fries or drizzle the ketchup over them?  When I eat them, I eat them nekkid.  Like nature intended them to be.  lol

3) Which cheese would make yours a cheeseburger in paradise: American, cheddar, Swiss, bleu, Muenster, or Monterrey Jack? Have you heard of Havarti? It's very tasty and I eat that a lot of the time. And now, thanks to this Meme,  I can ask for my veggie burger with Bleu.  Yes?

4) Buffett fans call themselves Parrotheads. Concert attire for a well-dressed Parrothead often includes a Hawaiian shirt and a foam fin hat. What will you be wearing tonight?  I will be wearing one of my long sleeved, full length, night dresses.  So Very Stylish.  N'est Pas?

5) For someone with such an easygoing and laidback vibe, Jimmy is a very busy man. His business ventures include liquors, restaurants and hotels. He's also published eight books. All this in addition to making music! On a scale of 1 to 10 -- with 1 being lazy and 10 being highly motivated -- how would you rate yourself this morning?  I'm nearly 81 years old.  I don't think of myself as lazy no matter HOW inactive I am.  There's really nothing for me to get all het up about anymore.  Trump and all his minions can go straight to Hades for all I care anymore.  I've done my innings.

6) Jimmy has some very famous fans. Paul McCartney asked him to play at one of his parties, and Barack Obama invited him to perform at a fundraiser. If you could invite anyone -- anyone at all! -- to play at your party, who would you ask?  James Taylor or Carly Simon.  Most likely it would be Carly Simon...and this song.. for my own mother.  She died 55 years ago, in her sleep.  

I've kept as close as I can, in my heart,  to both Mother and to my daughter....

7) Jimmy was born on Christmas Day. Does your birthday fall on a major holiday? If yes, do you mind "sharing" your special day?  Jimmy and I almost shared a birthday... I always liked Jimmy's voice...

8) In 1978, the year this song was popular, the Susan B. Anthony Dollar was first minted. The initial design was not a hit with the public because vending machines could not accept it. What's the last thing you bought from a vending machine?  Well, shucks, it's been so long ago that I cannot remember it. But I do remember that dollar.  

9) Random question -- If today's your birthday, your zodiac sign is Virgo. When did you last check your horoscope?  Not until this rolled up. lol

Note to my Readers:  This is a fun weekly meme that you might like to join.  If so please go HERE to the mad crew of non conformists who believe in free range posting.  Well, as long as it's not X rated that is.  PG13 is strongly encouraged.  

OK... Here we Go...

1. If I were young, I would move to Canada. But I'm also wondering if the poles will reverse soon. so.... maybe it's wiser to keep an eye on Tierra Del Fuego? 

 2. John Dalton, the famous British scientist, was born on this day, or maybe tomorrow. Britannica doesn't know either. *le sigh* If THEY don't know it, well then, NOBODY knows it. And does it even matter? 

 3. It is so hot today we are hibernating. At least that's our excuse for today. I'm not surprised that the early French lived in caves. No telling  what sort of sub human was "out there".  Also, we have no way of knowing just how hot (or cold) it was on their semi-furry bodies. Oh yes, they had a lot of body hair. Some of us still do!

 4. "Call the Midwife" has a new season! *Happy Dancing* 

 5. A long needed clean out in the photo cache is underway. I am busily trying to get rid of the "doops" and "WWIT" items. GAH! 

 6. It brings a wave of nostalgia that I cannot believe. 

 7. I just was told that someone's big mouth (he who THINKS he should be obeyed) just got himself in even hotter water. I hope it costs him a billion bucks by the time he goes to prison! 

 8. It rained.. well, it "clizzled".. a couple of days ago for about a half a day.  Everything in the garden was loving it. God bless the gray and rainy days. When I was a but a Lass, I remember that it ALWAYS rained in September,  and did so just in time for us to have to walk to and from school. lol 

 9. If "Happiness is a warm puppy", then I could certainly use a puppy right now. I want a long haired Chihuahua rescue, thank you very much. Short hair is fine as well. They are so little, I will take two. Please! 

10. Wish I was here right now.. Note:  This was supposed to be a picture of Humboldt Delta that is in Northern California, near Hollister, and at the mouth of the Humboldt River.  Native Americans set up fishing weirs in this bay.  It is their eternal right under treaty law.  They got it in writing.. heh heh  We watched them setting them up from a hilltop that overlooked the bay. 

Instead, I am showing you a photo of the Central Cal coast  that blogger will accept.  It is of Monterey Bay, looking north from New Brighton Beach cliffs.  I wish I could be in this place as well. 

I think that blogger is saying goodbye.  We will see.  Also, there was a HUGE space between the photo of Humboldt Bay and the next item ( #11).  It didn't show here but it showed in the preview.  I corrected it by changing out the photo.  

11.  And now a word from an insider (read, "mole") at the Pentagon: 

"Re: flying saucers.  Did you know that the USA is the only county - in this hemisphere, anyway - where the military keeps a tight hold on any and all information on the sightings of, or actual contact with, saucers, their pilots, or any other UFO's".  What are they hiding?  Brazil and most of South America is an entirely different story.  All information is shared.  Do they think we are children whose tender eyes and ears need to be protected from X rated films of UFOs?   Happily, they (the UFO’s) know better than to fly around here anymore. 'Nuff said.... You may quote me.  I feel sorry for the alien pilots .. truly."

 And, yes that is a direct quote from our Pentagon mole, aka "Court Jester".  

12.  Our Central and Northern California Coast is beautiful.  Hope you get to see it someday.  I'd avoid  L.A. though, It is a royal mess.  San Diego isn't too bad, though.

I don't like the Stones sound very much at all but here those dusty, rusty tones of this song don't seem so harsh, but, they seem perfect for the lyrics. I actually love them.... Hope you enjoy it.

Saturday 9: Working for a Living by Huey and the News.

1) Huey begins the song by telling us some workdays feel like they will never end. How was last week for you? Did it drag or did it fly by?  Pretty much, it flew.. I'm glad it's over.  I did get my new specs though.  Yay!  But they are tinted yellow, so they are going back.  Boo!

2) He sings that his car payment is due. Think about your personal finances. Do you pay most of your bills manually or do you more often take advantage of automated bill pay?  We do a few that way.

3) Huey Lewis achieved a perfect score on the math portion of the SAT. Did you take SATs and/or ACTs? Were your results anything to brag about? (If they were, go ahead and let us know!)  

Ok, you get the whole story.  

Well, back in the day, they were called, "The College Boards" which eventually came to be called the Psat. I scored very high.  

Back in those days, at my school, scoring high in that meant next to nothing.  Scholarships were given out like perks for influential parents, and may still be.  A lot of politics and such.  I won't whine again about it, but I will just say that it's still not what you know, it's WHO you know.   Y'know?

4) In his role as District Attorney for Essex County, MA, Huey's grandfather Hugh Cregg prosecuted high-profile murder cases. Do you enjoy watching or reading courtroom dramas?  I do.  In fact I'm reading one right now.  The Girls are Gone by Allison Man and Michael Brodcorb. 

5) Huey no longer performs because he has an inner-ear disorder that prevents him from holding a vocal pitch. Of your five senses -- hearing, sight, smell, touch and taste -- which is the strongest?  

I can no longer tell.  They are all sort of on the ropes. My hearing used to be the strongest, and next my sense of smell.  Smell is basically nil now since the last Pratt Fall in the kitchen during the pandemic.  

6) He is a fan of fly fishing. Did you do any fishing this summer? I haven't fished for ages.  But, I used to love to go surf fishing.  Those days are long past.

7) Approx. 10% of Americans are self employed. Have you ever been your own boss?  

Yes.  I used to make ceramics and jewelry to sell at shows.  It was a lot of fun and I still miss it and the people in the Ceramics club and the Guilds.

8) According to Monster.com, 50% of workers have left a job to get away from a boss. Are you one of the 50%? I am.

9) Farmers feel the impact of extreme weather events. Have you ever had a job that required you to be outdoors most of the time? 

No. Except that on mother's farm, we all helped as much as we could.  Well, except for the old man... he was off somewhere a lot of the time.  We planted, picked and weeded along with mother,  and I helped her to preserve the harvests, canning tomatoes and sauce, and make jams and jelly.  We also looked after the livestock that consisted of a couple of rooster, a lot of hens, and ducks, and pigeons.  My parents had pigeons that they ate the babies of.. Squab.  

I had Tumblers, and Peace Doves, and NO BODY ate my Doves or Pigeons.  Nobody but the darn Raccoons.
