First, here is Saturday 9 ...  

1) The lyrics ask where the snowflakes go. Sam can answer that: she shovels them! Do you shovel or use a snow blower? Or do you live in a warmer climate with no snow?  We have no snow except in the Mountains, which attracts a MOB when it happens.
 
2) This week's artist, John Legend, recalls his Christmases growing up, singing carols with his family around the piano. Do you have a piano, or any other musical instruments, in your home?  We had a piano for years and years but gave it to a man who refurbishes them for students who need a free piano.  I still have two guitars, and about three flutes.  Not sure if the kids took one of mine or not.  My banjo went to my daughter who plays guitar, violin and banjo.  Ah yes, and there’s the little flea, my ukulele. 

3) This song is from John Legend's first Christmas album, A Legendary Christmas. It was a massive hit. Did you add any new music to your holiday collection this year?  No.

4) John and his wife Chrissy Teigen go caroling with friends. What's the last song that you sang? I sang along with the a song in the sound track of a movie; it was "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond.

5) Chrissy's hobby is cooking. While she likes experimenting with new recipes, her young children prefer their familiar favorites, like mashed potatoes. She tosses a bay leaf into the water as the potatoes boil to add enhance the flavor. Do you have a dish that's considered your specialty?  Probably candied yams but it might be Beef Wellington.  My daughters liked that a lot before they all became vegans after they left home. 

6) John prefers to unwind with a good book and loves comparing reading recommendations with friends. Did you discover any books in 2020 that you'd like to recommend to our Sat 9ers?  There are a ton of books I would recommend but the one I'm reading now is RAGE, by Bob Woodward.  It's a great book. The Coming Plague is another.  The Highland Clans, by Alistair Moffet.

7) This song was written by Motown powerhouse Marvin Gaye. Who is your favorite Motown artist?
Smokey Robinson.

8) In 1972, Marvin wrote another Christmas song, "I Want to Come Home for Christmas." He dedicated it to the troops then serving in Vietnam. Do you know anyone who is protecting us this holiday season? Tell us about him or her. Whether they are in the armed forces, the police or fire department, or the ER, we want to say thank you!  I do.  He was my trainer, and left to join the San Diego County Sheriff's department. He called me "Crouching Turtle, Hidden Flower".  We had a great time, and he's still very special to me.  

 9) Random question: You go into the kitchen to make your perfect sandwich. What fixings do you need?  Half a pita, salad mix, fried falafel, tahini, and feta cheese.  Yummy!

Have you ever gone caroling? Once upon a time, when I was a teen..

Do you drive around and look at the Christmas lights?  Used to.  Haven't done it for a few years.

Have you ever left Santa cookies? Oh, heck yes.

Have you ever had a white Christmas? Yes, when I was little and living with my grandparents in Ohio when me brothers were born.

Be honest: Do you think the season is too commercial? Oh course it is.  I like to think of Yule, and find that more like the real deal.  I think it's coming back...

What’s your favorite thing about the holidays?  Getting together with family.

Do you send out Christmas cards and if so how many do you send? Not any more.

Be honest: holiday newsletters. Love ‘em or hate ‘em? I like them, mostly.

Be honest: photo cards. Love ‘em or hate ‘em?  I like these as well.

How soon do you start shopping?  I used to shop starting in September.

Real or fake tree?  Fake.  We found that we liked them.

When do you put up your tree? Right after Thanksgiving usually.

When do you take down your tree?  I have taken it down in April but usually sooner than that.  I really like the lights.

Describe your typical tree (size, decorations, type)  Six feet, white, handmade and/or old family ornaments, garlands.

What do you top your tree with? An Angel.

Do you put Christmas lights outside your house?  We usually do.  This year we didn't. 

Is there a wreath hanging on your door? No. All the wreaths are inside.

Do you hang up stockings? We used to.

Your favorite Christmas Movie(s) I like a lot of movies, like, "It's a Wonderful Life", which was my daughter's favorite.  And I even like the "Die Hard" series of Christmas movies. 

Be honest: A Christmas movie you hate. "Home alone" springs to mind. 

Favorite Christmas Song(s)  I like them all.

Be honest: If I hear this/these Christmas songs again I will throw up OK, there might be a chipmunk song that I'm tired of.  I can't remember, to be honest.  Can I come back and edit this? 

Give or Receive? I love giving.  Not so much receiving.  I have so much stuff that I can't really think about adding to it.  Well, some of those new little storage things with the wings that snap down.  *thinks about it*

Eggnog or Mulled Cider? Yes, Please!

Ham or Turkey? I won't eat either one. I don't like meat.

 Well, that was a bummer to read I bet.  I'm not very jolly at the moment so, maybe Monty Python should come over and hang me by the neck until I cheer up?  

Watch "The 10 worst Christmas Carols" Review,  if you dare... It's sort of adult but not too bad.  If you've been to a Bon Jovi concert, you won't bat an Eyelash.

Saturday 9: Happy Holidays!

Sorry friends.  This is pretty basic this week.  I’m working from my iPad and it has few “bells and whistles”.  

So... off we go! 

 1. As you can see, Sam loved giving her annual wish list to Santa. Yet some children are reluctant to climb into Jolly Old St. Nick's lap. Did you enjoy the tradition or were you shy? Or did you by pass it altogether -- either because you wrote him a letter or because your family didn't celebrate Christmas?  I pretty much only wrote letters.  When I was small mother took me to downtown L.A. to see the beautiful displays at Sears and other department stores.  That’s the only time I ever saw a department store Santa.  

2. Are you currently on the Naughty or Nice list? How did you get there?  I’ve been yelling at people in videos too much this year, so I’m likely on the naughty list.  I’ve been using some very naughty words that my mother would not approve of. Santa probably would understand but mother, no. 

3. Did you ship any gifts to friends and family this year? If so, which one traveled the farthest? I didn’t ship any presents this year.  Some one kindly shipped some goodies to our house though. Delicious 😋 little bits of this and that arrived yesterday. 

4. Did you buy yourself a gift this year? I bought a combo birthday/ Christmas gift, a Third Eye singing bowl.  Very nice.  My birthday is a couple days before Christmas. 

5. What's your favorite holiday-themed movie? Have you seen it yet this year? I love a lot of them.  But one of them is is, “ Nothing Like The Holidays” with Albert Molina.  We’ll have to see if we can rent it somewhere. 

6. Thinking of movies, Christmas is lucrative for Hollywood. Have you ever gone to a movie theater on Christmas Day? No.  

7. Have you ever suffered an embarrassing moment at the company Christmas party?  No. 

The Last two questions I can’t see on the iPad. Beverage..hot tea is my favorite. And... last Christmas we got together with relatives and had a feast and played out quarters game.  I also got to see my grandniece from Arizona!  She’s lovely.

1. Day 1 of serious isolation behavior: I don't usually have this happen to me.  I've got so much to do around here, and I'm always so tired, that it's good enough to me if even 3 things get done off the daily list.  Being old, as I am, it changes my whole level, or maybe direction, of Angst.  My angst meter is influenced by the Antics in Washington DC, particularly of The Mad King Donald. 

2. First trip you had to cancel. It was to Anaheim to bird watch and to visit with a DD.

3. Other trips canceled The one that was a summer trip to Santa Cruz to celebrate Birthdays. And the other was the trip written about below...

4. Last trip out of town before isolation. Didn't have a trip planned for the winter months just before covid19 hit.  So the last trip was to Santa Cruz 2 years ago.  We were going to go Fall of  2019, instead I took a Fall myself and put "Paid" to that trip.

5. Furthest from home since isolation. To the clinic to see my doctor.

6. Last Meal sitting in a restaurant before Isolation. In first week of February, with my daughter and her partner.  He took a picture of us together that I really love.

7. How many books have you read? I'm guessing, slightly here... 20+ or so, some hardbacks, and quite a few e-books

8. First event you didn’t attend due to virus. That would be a family Thanksgiving get together at a SILs.  It's always fun, but alas.

9. Date and event of last over 200-person event. Do you mean, say, like a rock concert?  Ah, I see, by the next question, that isn't what you mean.... 

10. Last live music event.  Years ago, to see Neal Diamond.

11. Things you are eating more of since isolation. Actually I am rapidly losing weight but not feeling like eating enough.  I'm not the cook so I don't get foods I really want very often.  I like pasta. And other noodles. 

 An Actress, I forget right now who,  once said that she had to gain 15 pounds for a role she was asked to do.  She said she told the producer that wasn't a problem, saying, "Hey! I eat two Spaghetti Dinners and I'll be there!"

 12. Things you are eating less of since isolation.  No, I'm actually eating less.

13. What restaurants have you gotten take-out meals from?  OK,  There's Sammy's, Rubio's, Panera, Impossible Burger, and our favorite local pizza place.  

14. Have you found yourself bored in isolation? Trust me, I'm never bored.  If I get bored, I can go sort my quilting fabric, or even the yarn stash. It's that old S.A.B.L.E corollary, you know..

15. Have you gained or lost weight?  I've lost a lot of weight.

16. Do you drink alcohol? Regularly? No. I do always have Champagne at New Year's Eve when the ball in New York drops.  And sometimes when we go out to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, I'll get a Margarita.  Lately I don't. I can get giddy far too quickly and then can barely walk.  Too big a chance to take for breaking a bone.   My drinking days are o.v.e.r.

 17. If so, more or less in isolation? N.A. 

18. What entertainments have you explored?  Movies and that Amazing Baking show - The British one.  I watch lots and lots of mysteries.  I've even started watching the French, German and Norwegian mysteries.  And the Spanish ones, and the Italian ones ..... Everything the BBC has put up at least twice.

19. Gotten into anything new? No, because I have done a small business with a lot of various crafts that people call hobbies, and I'm not at a loss for any new ventures.  And, I'm just too old for hang gliding, which is something that would be wonderful to do.  I'd break a bone or a gland or something just getting that harness on.

20. Have you done crosswords? Board games?  Jigsaw puzzles?  We talked about dragging out the board games but no, we didn't do that.  I want to play Cribbage because it's the only game I win apox 90% of the time.  DH would rather play poker, which I can NEVER WIN.  So, no card games.  I do daily jigsaw puzzles from an online app you can download.  Starts with a K.  We both do daily crosswords from the newspaper. He does three and I do two, sometimes three. Also, I play "Solitaire" and "Free Cell" constantly, as well as "Spider".

21. Have you cleaned out some cabinet, drawer, closet, etc. thoroughly?  Please define "thoroughly".  😂 I clean a drawer "up". But since covid19 hit I've just let them sort of "Marinate".

22. Are you spending about the same amount of money?  We are spending a lot less because of the missed trips and things. 

23. Done Zoom, Facetime, etc. meetups? My daughter wanted to do "Zoom", and so did we, but we all haven't gotten to it yet. 

24. Had a social occasion with a small group of people you consider safe?  No.  Among the people- family- here there are members who don't wear masks, and who go everywhere they want to.  So we don't plan on getting together anymore until this terrible thing is over.

 25. Did you vote? In Person? On Election Day? We did vote.  And we did it the way that California has allowed us to do since we turned 70, by Absentee ballot. 

I once was one of the people who work at the polls, and it's insulting what has happened.  

We, all of us at the polls, put our country and our duty first.  We would never continuance any abridgement of rights or abuse of the ballot.  I feel so sorry for the man that was singled out for a death treat.  That is asinine. And it's actually, if looked at correctly, a criminal offense.

Saturday 9: Santa Baby (1987)

1) In this song, Madonna refers to Santa as "baby," "honey" and "cutie." What's the most recent endearment someone called you?  

I was called, "Dear".  It was a friend on the web, as in, "Hello, Dear".

2) At the top of her list are a fur coat, a new convertible and a yacht. If you could receive any of those luxury items, which would you choose?

I need a new car very badly, so I'd take that. 

3) She would like to decorate her tree with ornaments from Tiffany's. Do you have a favorite holiday ornament or decoration?  

My close friend (..ie, my younger sister) and I made these one year.  The are pretty special to me. 

4) "Santa Baby" was written in 1953, before electronic payments. While her wish list includes blank checks, a 2017 survey revealed that 51% of consumers felt check writing was "a pain." Who received the last check your wrote? Who most recently gave you a check?

Drawing a blank here. I don't write checks at all.  Sorry.  I can say that no one has given me a check for a coon's age.

5) Madonna has been a successful singer for decades, and 1985's "Into the Groove" is her top-seller. What's your favorite Madonna song? 

"Don't Cry for me Argentina"  I don't care who sings it, it's a gorgeous song.  Madonna does a great job with it.

6) Madonna was born in Bay City, MI, and traveled to New York City to find fame and fortune. When she first arrived, she supported herself by working at Dunkin' Donuts. What's your standard DD order?

Sorry, I can't eat donuts.  Do they sell Bagels?  Muffins?

7) The only Christmas card Sam has received so far this year is from her dentist. Have you received many cards this year?

 Two, and from friends.  I don't generally send out cards so the whole thing has crashed except of a few very dedicated folks whom I treasure for their persistence.  I send a card out if I get one and so they inevitably  get there late. 

8) Will you wrap many presents? Or do you prefer to use gift bags?  

I use gift bags, though I would wrap them if they were for a kid.   

9) Madonna recorded "Santa Baby" to benefit The Special Olympics. Here's your chance to plug a cause or organization that's near and dear to you.

The IRC aka International Rescue Committee.  They do AMAZING work all over the world.  And they have a stellar record.  Here's a blurb:

The more we understand this thing and how it's spread, the better we will be able to respond to another emerging threat in the future.  

Being slow off the ball on this was NOT the answer, and wishful thinking, magical thinking just doesn't work on something that has the potential to be a "Satan Bug".

Follow the guidelines, and help stop the spread.  Don't be crazy.  Wear the Damned mask! 

I just have to go knit and watch things that give me some angst relief.  Maybe I'll do a Wordless Wednesday.

1. What is the craziest, most outrageous thing you want to achieve? Other than to establish World Peace?  I'll give it a pass.  The things I want to achieve would probably get me arrested.  I try not to think about them.  They also would require a magic wand.

2. Have your parents influenced what goals you have? My mother wasn't a quitter. My Dad was a Sociopath.  My goal in life was to be like my industrious little Mamma and to NEVER be like the paternal unit.  Except for the few years of my early adulthood, I think I managed to follow the best one of the two.

3. What is a fashion trend you’re glad went away.  Since I still wish I could get navy style bell bottoms it's not those.  Having said that I  am VERY glad that shoes that were stacked so HIGH that you could easily break your neck wearing them, are not now a thing of the past.

4. What word or saying from the past do you think should come back?  If it was left back there in the past, any word or saying would be completely irrelevant today.  So, I say none. 

5. What do you bring with you everywhere you go? My purse.

6. Is there such a thing as a soul? I've lived long enough to say there is such a thing as a soul.  I won't go into details here, but there's been ample evidence, in my view, that souls exist.

7. Is there life after death?  Life is just a dream, Sweetheart.  Death is a door, and we get out of this monkey cage by going through it.

8. Do you think there will ever be a third world war?   Given our miserable little past, I'd say yes.

9. What smell brings back great memories?  The smell of pine trees, and wood smoke.

10. How would you like to be remembered?  As a Stargazer, which is actually my Native American name. 

11. What kind of music are you into?  Guitar and Lute music of all kinds, and Classical Music.

12. What is the biggest surprise of your life?  That a tiny one (not three as I had said) pound poodle puppy could steal my heart in a nano second when he dropped down into play stance in a quiet room at the rockhound round up.  DH scruffed the rug in front of him, and Jazzy did that.  I'd told Mr. Z that I did NOT want another dog after my dear heart, little Muttley.

1) The bridge that inspired this song is The Queensboro Bridge in New York City. Are you near a bridge right now as you answer these 9 questions? Nope, no where near a bridge.
 
2) Paul Simon says he "loathes" this song and only performs it because fans want to hear it. What's your favorite Paul Simon song?  I love so many of his songs but the one that always gets right to the heart of me is about a poor boy, whose story's seldom told.
 
3) "Groovy" is such a 1960s word. What common word/phrase from 2020 do you predict will sound just as silly and quaint some day?  I'm really afraid I'm not up on the current catch phrases. 
 
4) Paul is a lifelong Yankees fan and was thrilled to meet his all-time idol, Joe DiMaggio. Mr. DiMaggio was, at first, less than thrilled to meet Paul because he thought the song "Mrs. Robinson" made fun of him. Once Simon convinced him it was an homage, the men got along fine. Do you have a celebrity encounter to tell us about?  The closest I've ever been to a celebrity was David Ogden Stiers across the huge lawn near The Old Globe Theater.  I looked up and saw him, stood and did a little Curtsie, and he bowed back to me.

5) Art Garfunkle was the other half of Simon and Garfunkle. Art and Paul met in sixth grade, when were both in a school production of Alice in Wonderland. Tell us about one of your school theatrical appearances.  I played Wiggins the Witch in a 7th grade All School play.  It was fun being wicked.

6) "Artie" used to love needling Paul about his height -- or lack thereof. He maintained he was trying to be funny, but Paul thought is was mean and says the constant digs hurt. Is there anyone in your life who similarly enjoys teasing? Mean teasing? Yes. I can say no more about her.
 
7) Paul told NPR that his impulse to write new music has always come "in bursts." He'll go years without composing, and then he'll write every day for months. Do you often feel creative?   Yes.  I just found some of my older drawings in a drawer and thought about drawing and painting again, a Grandma Zippi sort of vibe, ya' know?
 
8) In 1966, when this song was popular, First Daughter Luci Johnson married Patrick Nugent. Their reception was held at the East Room of the White House. The couple had an 8 ft. tall wedding cake and when the bride threw her bouquet, it was caught by her sister, Lynda. Sure enough, Lynda married a year later. Tell us about a wedding you attended (or your own).  I went to a friend's niece's wedding in a black dress.  

Story time: I had made a beautiful dress for this wedding, and when I got into our ramshackle Dodge station wagon (it's knick name was "Moby Dodge" because it was 21 feet long and white) in order to drive to the church, the seat spring that couldn't rip through my jeans on a normal day, took GREAT delight in ripping through  the lovely material of my new dress.  I had to quickly change my poor, new dressy dress out for the only other good thing I had.  That was a black pants' suit.  Later I took a pair of pliers to that damn spring and shoved it way to the backside of beyond. 
 
9) Random question: Which do you regret more -- the times you were cautious or the times your were reckless?  I've not been reckless in my whole life.  But I'm not timid either.  So, there just isn't anything I can recall for being too cautious, either.
