1) Doris sings that she has her bag packed. Tell us about your luggage. Is your bag easy to spot on the luggage carousel?
Yes. I have no trouble spotting mine.
  And that song is so short.  I used to sing it, along with my mother, because one thing my parents had, early on, was a record player. 

2) The release of this song coincided with VE Day, and so it meant a great deal to troops returning home from Europe. What song has sentimental value for you? Why?  I can't think of a special song. sorry...  But, I think it's time to go watch funny movies.  I'll be thinking of a tiny girl, darling...and her Hello Kitty slippers...She said they had super powers and that they made her feel better...
 3) As a young girl, Doris was passionate about dance. Concentrating in the studio and performing on stage helped distract her from heartache and embarrassment over her parents' divorce. When you want to escape from what's troubling you, what do you do?
I watch funny movies.
 
4) Her dancing days came to an end when, at age 15, she was in a car accident and damaged her leg. During her recovery, she discovered how much she enjoyed singing with the radio, and was delighted to find others enjoyed hearing her. Tell us about a time you unexpectedly found happiness or success.
I think the turning point in my life was finding my DH at the neighbor's party that year.  That was totally unexpected, and sort of a personal miracle.

5) She moved from singer to actress in the late 1940s and was a major movie star for 25 years. She was paired with the most popular leading men of her time -- everyone from Clark Gable to Frank Sinatra to Rock Hudson. If you could share a kiss with any actor or actress, who would you choose?
I would kiss Bette Midler on the cheek.  She could kiss me back if she felt so inclined.  She is an inspiration to me in her animal welfare work.

....OMG....I just looked up the correct spelling of her last name and came across "The TWEET!"

Good lord, I think I'll kiss her TWICE!  And, I just saw "the photo"!....  I've been OFF Melania since she rushed her parents here, under the radar, into full citizenship, using her new "special powers."  This whole thing gets more surreal by the second.   For the record, I have always liked Bette.  I think she has a gorgeous voice!

6) 1968 was a terrible year for Doris. First, she suddenly became a widow. Then she discovered that her late husband and his business partner had squandered her money and she had to file for bankruptcy. Oh, wait! There's more! She also found that, in his role as her manager, her late husband had, without her knowledge, committed her to a weekly TV series. Do you have a 1968? What year you can point to and say, "Wow, I'm glad that's over"? 
Not a personal 1968, really.  I will be glad when this DAY is over, though, and I am back home, so I'll say "Wow, I'm glad that is over!"  Personal junk...
 
About Doris Day, she was only one of many who had to have a MALE handler.  I am SO glad those days are over!
 
7) After retiring from show business, she became an advocate for animal welfare. She has said we should be more sensitive to the loneliness, sadness and guilt people feel when they lose a pet. Think of a time you were grieving. What words or gestures helped you through? Conversely, what's something no one should ever say to someone who is hurting?  I'll tell you when I'm through it.  And what would I tell someone who was grieving?  
I have no idea.  I'd just cry with them I reckon, and hold them.  Some things you just don't "get over".  You feel your heart sink every single time that something reminds you of them.
8) Doris' only child was her son, record producer Terry Melcher. Terry had a successful, years-long collaboration with The Beach Boys. Do you have a favorite Beach Boys song?

9) Random question: What's one thing you've never done, but have always wanted to try?   
I'd like to try out "Being Rich".  I've heard it can be wonderful.  ;o)

Now for something different.  I hope you'll find it fun.  Pandora has been doing Sunday Stealing for years, even though she's in Australia and can't relate to many of the questions, so I invited her to submit an Australia-related set of questions. She checked these with friends and says that Australians could easily answer them.

Many of these you won't be able to answer, but give it a try--and understand how Pandora feels!  (I printed all of them because I figure you'll skip many -- feel free to check Google and learn some new things!)


1. Where to you land on the subject of vegemite? What is the optimum butter/vegemite ratio?
I've been warned by several Aussie pen pals to NEVER eat Vegemite.  I have, therefore, no experience with ratio's but I would do 100% butter.  Would that work? 
 
 Do you also eat Promite or Marmite or do you see these yeast spreads as something akin to treason?

Only if Trump had to match my eating of Marmite, would I do this, either.  You mentioned Treason, you see....
 
2. Who was your favourite Prime Minister of the last ten years? (There have been five – choose wisely) ummmm.... pass

3.  Are you a Monarchist or a Republican? Why?
I'm totally for the Monarchy.  Because I would rather have a Queen than a jumped up Republican who thinks he's a King.  Maybe he's a closet Queen?  Hmmmm

4.  What do you think of our current head of state?
Anything has GOT to be better than what we poor cousins across the Pond have.  But I hear that you have an Azzhat, too.  Mon Dieu!  It must be the Universe... Our system is approaching a black hole?

5.  What are your feelings on compulsory voting.
I'm for it. Drag them out kicking and screaming, but Vote they MUST!  I wish you luck with that one, mate!
 
6.  What is your favourite footy food?
I'll have a go at French fries and Vegetarian cheese rolls. Can you actually EAT Yoyos?  Ooops! Wrong Question!

7.   Your Nana is having her 80th catered for by the CWA. What CWA standards are you looking forward to at the spread? The Victoria Sponge? Yoyos? Asparagus Rolls? Brandy Snaps? 
Brandy Snaps sound good but I'll go with Victoria Sponge.  I watch the British Baking Show and actually know what that IS.  And let's have Asparagus Rolls, and is it possible to have that as a Footy Food too?  I hopeahopeahope...

8.  What do you do on ANZAC Day?
Well, I'm usually celebrating Spring.  But, I watch many Australian shows, and I know that is a solemn day when Veterans are honored,  so I'll be thinking of you all down under... and sending cyber hugs.
 
9.  Discuss the merits of budgie smugglers.
Well, there aren't any.
 
10. What is outside your back door? Gumboots or thongs?
Crocs.  I have a pair of lime green for the outside shoes.

11. As a kid you were given 20 cents for pick and mix. What will be in your bag? Teeth? 
 Gob Stoppers, Jaw Breakers if you are old school, which you aren't. 

Spearmint leaves? Gobstoppers? Freckles?
Yep, Gob Stoppers.
 
12.  Redbacks or Huntsmen?
I'm going with Huntsmen.  I like them and know they can't really kill you, unless you are allergic, which I am.  You can't hold that against them though.
 
13.   The Mullet. Discuss.
Just shave it all off you Chicken!
 
14.   Kath or Kim?

Now this I am going to have to look up.  I'm guessing these two are News Casters.  They aren't two of the Kardashians are they?  *shivers*
 
15.   Cricket – which code do your follow? Why? Do you think that 20/20 games are sacrilege?

I think Cricket itself is a sacrilege, and it's about as good as watching paint dry, but no worse than an American football game, once described by a visiting Russian as, "all get up, all fall down".  I like that tea is served, and that's what impresses me.  So civilized.
 
16.   Football. Which code do you follow? Do you have an opinion about Collingwood or Essendon?

Well no, no opinion on those two things, rivals, teams, or whatever they are.  I refuse to look it up.  Having said that I intend to pontificate anyway.  I'll go with Essendon, because I like the word.  Collingwood sounds stodgy.  Too English.  Besides as far as codes, I follow the code of the Wild West, shoot (off your big mouth) first and go look up the answers later.

17.   Do you agree that the lyrics to Khe Sahn should be on the citizenship test? Do you know the words to Khe Sahn?

I know what Khe Sahn means to Americans.  
In the spirit of truth, Yes to the first, and No to the second.  And, having looked up the lyrics, it's Hell, no to the first as well.  Too hard a look back to the dreadful, troubled past for everyone involved in that Mess.  I wish Kennedy had lived,  he was going to pull the troops (advisors)out of Vietnam.  God, I think I need a big long vacation in the back of beyond..... 
 
18. What is your favourite public holiday? If you're in Victoria, which do you prefer? The day off before the AFL Grand Final or Melbourne Cup Day?
I'd have to say AFL day.  I like to watch Footy on the telly from time to time. 

19.   What do you do at Christmas? Ham sandwich on the beach? Seafood and salad next to the pool? Endure a full English roast with all the trimmings when the thermometer is pushing 35 degrees centigrade outside?

We have a sort of full on English roast, but not the roast.. A turkey or ham.  Fourth of July, in the Northern Hemi summer, we have hotdogs at the water's edge and potato salad with a watermelon for dessert.  That's when you probably have nice warming foods.  It's a funny old Round world tipped on it's side, init?

21.   What is the best Australian invention ever? (And yes, the Hills Hoist can be mentioned)
Ummm  sorry, I don't know.. But there is this musical instrument that I've played once. I'd love to have one.

22.   Describe the following: Sorry, NO, I will not... I'll just tell you what I think they are, without looking them up. K?

    Fairy bread Some sort of stringy fungal growth on bushes that is edible and tastes sweet.

    Lamingtons  Baby sheep

    Chiko rolls Chicken, deep fried and rolled up inside of pastry.

    Snot blocks *shudders* 

23.   What are the following traditional items found in all Australian homes?

    Dead horse  Something from the Shed, Fred?

    Hills Hoist   Sort of a block and tackle thing for raising the water table?

    A slab a side of bacon, at least that's what it means in the States.  Hmmm, read ahead abit and it seems to be a side of beef or something.

    A ute  I've seen them in Australian movies.  A snub-nosed little utility vehicle, and they are darn cute and I wish that we could have them here, too.  I want one!

24.   Who is your all time Australian hero?
Sorry I can't think of a single one without looking said person up.

25.   Translate the following: “Strewth! Nev was going flat out like a lizard drinking. But he had a nana nap and he's raring. Told him to get here pronto by not to miss the gate cos it’s impossible to chuck a u-ey for miles. Told him to bring a slab. We’ll have a barby. The kiddies can have snags. "It's the truth.  Nev fell down flat as a lizard when he got drunk.  But he took a nap and is Gung-Ho to go and  up on his hind legs again.  I told him to get here really fast, like NOW, and not to drive through the gate because he'll be so far out in the back of beyond that no one would hear him if he yelled.  Told him to bring his own meat, and we'll BBQ it, and the kids can have the left overs.  Joe, an off worlder, and will start his non-stop complaining, such a bastard, Nope, no, he's always a step ahead.

All Americans want to go to a Town Called Alice, you know that.....

I wouldn't. No..

I don't know who they are, but I'd just meditate unless one of them was really smelly!  Then I'd have to scream and cry a lot.

Saturday 9: The Middle (2018)

1) This song is about compromise. When did you recently give in a little and meet someone halfway?  I guess  the last compromise was about what to have for dinner.  Pretty innocuous. 

2) She sings that the floors are wet. Are there any floors in your home that could use a good scrub today? If you answered "yes," will those floors get cleaned this weekend?
Yes, there are, and those are the kitchen, dining, and the bathroom floors.  All the floors get vacuumed every week.  We have, almost, tile floors throughout the house, and those stay pretty clean because we never walk on most of them anymore.   This floor - *points to what's under her feet* - needs replacing, so I don't scrub it. 

3) She also sings that the cabinets are bare. What's currently on your shopping list?
I don't have to do the grocery shopping anymore, so I really don't know.  I would like more noodles, though.  I'm always up for more Pasta or Chinese Noodles!

4) You may be familiar with this song from Target's TV commercials. Do you often shop at Target? 
 We don't shop there very often but they have the best choices for some things we need, and we buy them there.  Target will be happy to know this. 😉  It used to be the Go To place for me when I was younger.  I like Target.

5) The lead vocal is handled by Maren Morris, a Grammy winner for "My Church," which is all about singing with the car radio. What's the last song you sang along with?
I just don't sing anymore.  But I can still whistle tunes.  Once I got pneumonia singing was pretty much a thing of the past - because of lung damage.   

6) This past April, Maren married singer-songwriter Ryan Hurd and they have performed onstage together. Who is the last person you sang along with?   With one person?  I was taught how to harmonize by a young ( like me) guitarist who played guitar for a pre-school in the 70's.  It was a magical thing.... beautiful.  We sat on the floor of the classroom, and we sang together.  

Speaking of Singers... here's my favorite guy singer, singing something that they can play at my funeral if they want to... No one will like it but me, but I love it.  He died on my birthday, in 2014 .... RIP and sing with the Angels, my friend.



7) This song was composed by brothers Kyle and Michael Trewartha. With their bleached hair and sunglasses, they look like a pair of surfer dudes -- which they are, having grown up in Huntington Beach, CA. Is there a body of water near your hometown?
A very BIG one.

The Pacific Ocean, and we used to live along the bay, in the same town as the long beaches that we could surf, fish, and swim at.  I'm a complete water baby, and so are my kids.

8) January 2018, when this song debuted, we had a total lunar eclipse. When things like that happen in the sky, do you go out of your way to watch?
No.  We watch them from close by, but don't go out to Montana or anything.  We made a pin dot "camera" to watch one of the solar eclipses and watched it from right at the top of our hill.


Ours was made more simply than this, and we used a much bigger box.  

9) Random question -- They say we're all young at heart. In what way can you be childlike?
I'm completely, utterly unprejudiced.  That's the way little kids are, in the beginning.

I can spend hours playing with mud.  (clay) 

I baby talk to puppies, kittens, and baby rabbits.  Well, baby anythings....

1. What's the coldest temp you've experienced?
Mark Twain once said that the coldest winter he'd ever experienced was summer in San Francisco.  
Me?  I guess that overnight temperature of 18°F, in the Astrovan at the parking lot near Mt. Palomar Observatory.   Frozen!

2. What's for dinner tonight?
Pasta with chicken meatballs and Salad.  This would be tomorrow night, actually.  We like accuracy in our reporters here at Sunday Stealing.  Tonight, it's potluck.

3. Would you consider moving to Australia?
If I were young?  Yes.  Like, in a heart beat!  Now I only want to move to the Upper part of California.  Which is a lot like parts of Australia, actually.  SoCal is ruined.  

4. What was your favorite subject in high school?
Just one?  Geometry, English Lit, and  History.  Science was pretty BLAH in high school.  It was WAY better in college.  Geology and Anthro!

5. How many hours a day is your tv on?
It's on a couple of hours in the evening. 8pm until 10pm usually... We are watching "Once Upon a Time", and "Designated Survivor" on Netflix.  The second one is  a lot better than the first but the first hath it's charm... if you like evil witches.  They are both stories about the fight of Good against Evil, so maybe are more alike than not.  

6. Have you ever received an award?
If I did, I can't remember... probably not, but maybe?  I received  Rock Hound of the Year award, twice.  It came with a plaque.

7. Whats your mousepad look like?
It's a rectangle and sort of floral but an abstract floral.  I didn't pick it out.  but now I'm glad that it does it's job well, just sitting there being quiet and relatively mono-toned.

8. How many browser tabs do you have open right now?
Six of them.  I just usually open another browser when I want to do research or something here... 

9. If you are a parent, have you or did you ever put Vicks VapoRub on your children under the age of 2?  No.  

10. As an adult, do you like the scent of Vicks VapoRub? No.  

11. If you had to pick one insect to infest your house for 1 day and after that day they would just suddenly vanish, which insect infestation would you pick?
Lady Bugs!

1) This song is about a woman waiting impatiently for a phone call. Do you consider yourself patient?  Yes, I do.  

2) Other women (most notably Shirley Bassey and Dottie West) have recorded this song. Harry James and Doc Severinson did instrumental versions. But there's no record of a male singing "Oh dear God! It must be her! Or I shall die!" Do you think that's because waiting for the phone to ring is more "a chick thing," and men simply don't do it?
Men usually are the ones who instigate things, and especially when the song was written.  I know men who would DIE rather than to sit around listening for a phone to ring. So, No...

3) This recording enjoyed a sudden surge of popularity after 20 years when it was included on the soundtrack of Moonstruck, the 1987 film that won Cher an Oscar. Have you seen Moonstruck?
I own the movie, like it, and have watched it many times.  Maybe it's time to watch it again.  But it's on VCR..  😢 

4) This week's featured artist, Vikki Carr, was born in El Paso, TX. El Paso can proudly proclaim itself one of America's safest cities. What can your hometown be proud of?
I actually have no true Home Town.   After the paternal unit was deployed, Mom moved in with her parents and I was born; but all three of us moved out to California when I was 2.   Maybe Alhambra is my "home" town?  

5) She was a staple on Jerry Lewis' Labor Day Telethon, raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by performing this song. Is your TV on right now? If so, what are you watching?
It isn't on.  I don't watch anything this early unless it's something dire.  This was typed at 8 am on Friday...

6) In 1971, Vikki fulfilled a dream of hers by establishing the Vikki Carr Scholarship Foundation. Every year the foundation awards Hispanic American students money to use toward higher education. She says it's her way of returning "the support and encouragement she received from others" early in her career. If you could establish a charitable foundation, what cause would you like it to benefit?
Like Vicki, I would establish a fund for children, to make sure that they were supported in their goals, re: Education or trades.  America WASTES it's children's lives with it's collective stinginess.  Higher education is just one more victim of an increasingly elitist society.

7)  In 1967, when this song was popular, Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the first heart transplant. Today, one of the most common surgeries performed in the United States is the coronary artery bypass surgery. Have you had any surgeries?
Yes, and, at nearly 76, I've had my fair share of them.  

8)  Also in 1967, the RMS Queen Mary was retired after 31 years of service. Have you ever traveled by cruise ship? 
No, and I would much rather not be on a cruise ship.  Too BIG!  
I'm a sailor at heart, and always wanted to sail around the world in a Sloop or a something like that.

Blood relative?  I don't know.  But I do have an in-law who is a whopping 100 years old.
