You are a person who wants and respects honesty so here goes: The very first thing I think of is the plight of the Australian Aboriginal people. It's sort of Engraved on my heart. This is not because I'm inherently a negative person; it is that I am someone who thinks that problems can't be solved unless people recognize them, and many in Australia are working on this very thing, helping the Aborigines. There is a very interesting group of doctors working on getting the natural diet back into Aboriginal life and the results have been breathtaking. Netflix has the documentary in which these doctor's and nutritionist's work is highlighted. No matter what side of the divide you are on, the work these young medical people are doing with the Aboriginal diet is awe inspiring to say the least. I watched this documentary when it first came out and have never forgotten it. Now Netflix has it up. 32. Ever ridden on a roller coaster? No. It's just really not my thing. 33. Birthstone? Various. Depends on what chart you read. 34. Do you go in at a fast food place or just hit the drive through? There's only one fast food place we go to anymore, and they don't have a drive through. 35. It's fun to read on a Saturday... Also this has taken about four hours to perfect, so that's why I only do these two memes now. Well, these and Wordless Wednesday... 1) This week's song is the theme from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, a sitcom that originally aired from 1970 to 1977. Were you a fan? I watched it from time to time. It was a nice show. Mary Tyler Moore was funny, and her writers were top notch! 2) The song tells us that Mary Richards can turn the world on with her smile. Yet the real-life Mary Tyler Moore said she was uncomfortable with her "wide mouth." If you could improve on one of your facial features, which would you choose? It's too late for me. I mean, really.
But then, I could start smoking Cuban Cigars, and it wouldn't be the thing that kills me. Yes? This image is supposedly from (the Infamous) Pinterest.

But, there is something called The French Facial, that all French women know about. It is not the one that is shown HERE at The Cut. That one is for clearing the glands in the head and it looks very promising for adenoidal misfits like me.

There are two exercises that I've used to ward off two problems over the years, but, unfortunately they have quit working for me. (or maybe I just got plain lazy? Mon Dieu!) Anyway, here goes.... 1. Put your hands on your forehead and push back your head while resisting the push with your head and neck muscles. 2. Put an index finger into both sides of your mouth and pull out with them while pursing your lips. Do ten reps of these two exercises, several times a day but don't overdo it! You will wish you hadn't. Oh yes, the muscles of your face can get sore.. 3) We also hear that Mary can "take a nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile." What do you think makes a day "a nothing day?" I'm not sure, having never had one. To be honest, I don't have "nothing" days, and probably never did. I was always busy with a family of six to look after, plus much volunteering, then after that, a business to run, even if it didn't go anywhere when Nixon opened the floodgates to China.... And Now, time is shorter than it's ever been, as every day and every minute counts even the 'living in the moment' ones where you center into your inner Solace.... 4) Mary works in the newsroom at WJM. Her desk is neat as a pin. Are you neat? Or do you lean to the sloppy side? I used to be very neat and tidy. When the girls were all out of the nest. I started a business. There was little time to keep things orderly. I don't like disorder. Though I love an organized and tidy house, right now I don't have one. Oh, it's organized but not neatly. There's WAY too much stuff in it, and only a little tiny bit of energy in a day to get it completely finished or make improvements, like new paint. And, the garden is also a big mess since the winter wind finally broke down the big patio cover. Lots of dead plants now. Summer sun and Succulents, Bromeliads, and ferns just do not mix.

5) Mary's best friend, Rhoda, worked as a window dresser at Hempel's department store. What department store did you most recently shop at? What did you buy? I haven't been in a department store in decades. And that's way too long ago to remember what I bought. My guess is that it was undergarments, at Sears, or even a Christmas pin at Macy's. My sister and I used to go to Macy's every year to buy a Christmas pin. Now, I get us each one, through Amazon sellers. I really loved Macy's. Heck it may still be there? I can't remember.
6) Mary Richards lived in Minneapolis. What city is nearest to where you are right now? I live in a big city. I wish I didn't have to, but there ya go...I still think we should have gotten out in the 60's just before we came south, when the getting was good. But, Alas, we did not. So, we bought our teeny little house and in a year or two, it had tripled in price but so had everything else here, anywhere on the coast. I feel REAAAALY bad for the generations after us...
7) Originally the part of Mary Richards was written as a divorcee, but in 1970, there were no TV shows that centered around a divorced woman. Think about the women in your life. Are most of them married, divorced, single or widowed? There are a lot of widows amongst our rockhound friends. And in the family, most of the women have been divorced and then remarried, and some are still single and never married. I'd say it's death and divorce that rule. 8) The MTM production company logo featured a mewing kitten. The cat was found in a Minneapolis shelter, and, after her sequence was shot, she was adopted by a crew member who named her Mimsie. What's the name of the last cat -- or dog or hamster or rabbit -- that you petted? Wolfie. He comes to be petted when I finally arise. He and his daddy get up way too early for me. I read until 12:30 or 1 in the morning so get up a couple hours later than they do. Wolfie wants his breakfast at 4 am, but has to wait until 5.
9) Random question -- Would you rather have a job that kept you seated on your fanny or standing on your feet? The Fandango wins, at my age... well, to be honest, even when I was a little younger. I've had several jobs that were standing ones. They are killers. So, sitting is fine as long as I could stand and stretch once in awhile. Sitting at a desk for hours on end deforms the hip joints and leads to work related injury and, subsequently, to surgery.

Here are some food questions from Swap Bot 1. Do you like pie? Pie is my favorite dessert. I like to make meat pies, too, but not for dessert, of course. 2. Italian or Mexican? Yes, please. 3. Can you bake? If so, what are your favorite things to bake? Yes, I do like to bake. I made my first scratch cake when I was 8, and I was Hooked. Bread used to be my favorite thing to bake. I baked all our daily bread until we moved to San Diego. I like to bake anything and everything. I made my own tortillas and other breads for years and years, even after the twins were born. Random factoid: We took 12 dozen tortillas on a long camping trip once. 4. Do you use cook books or do you try to find recipes online? I no longer do any of the cooking except for holidays, but when I did, I used my recipes and cookbooks and some of my mother's recipes. 5. Do you own a kitchen aid mixer? Yes, but oddly, we only got it after the kitchen remodel, and after I had stopped baking. I need to reassert myself in that Realm. 6. Ever cooked a meal for more than 15 people at one time? Yes, used to do that quite often. It was fun to do! 7. Do you like hospital food? Hospital food is quite bad. 😜 The only good hospital food is the catered stuff that is available to the semi secret "Special Wing" at most hospitals. Hospitals won't do that for you or for me, but you can't expect, say, Tom Cruise or some random Billionaire to eat what the peons eat, can you? 8. Favorite fast food restaurant? That would be Point Loma Seafoods 9. Any picky eaters in your family? Not a one in our family. I have seen it in other families, though. 10. Soda or Tea? I like tea and don't like very many sodas. Really good Root Beer and Ginger Beer, though, I do like those. Does that put me in the picky eater category? 11. Hot chocolate? I don't like cocoa. But I do like the kind of hot chocolate you get in Europe. Only I've only had it once or twice. Someday I'll learn to make it. 12. Favorite holiday dish? Corn bread stuffing. I love that stuff- with gravy. I see that you already asked about dessert and, it's not really a dish anyway... 13. What is the most tasteful strangest looking thing you have ever tasted? It was some sort of fruit, or melon. It was Dragon fruit. I like Cactus Pears and it's about the same thing. 14. Fries or tater tots? Fries, but, oddly, I do like me some very crispy tater tots. Probably because I don't know what's in them. 15. Do you like cheese? If so what kind? I like them all. And, yes even Limburger. My half German grandfather gave my mother a taste for it, and she passed that love of Limburger on to her kids. This factoid was something my second grade teacher didn't believe at all and chastised me roundly for "lying about" in front of the class. More fool her! 16. Home made or can soup? I made most of the soups my family ate, except that Progresso soup was progressively a favorite soup, too. It traveled well when camping out. We did as much camping out as we could. Cheap vacations. 17. Do you like to eat out? I do occasionally like to eat out. Yes 18. What kind of food is popular where you are? (Like in Alaska it is seafood) This is a seacoast city with HUGE Italian population so Italian food is popular here, and so is Mexican food ( or if you will....Tex-Mex... )because, well, 170 years ago this WAS Mexico. 19. Do you like cotton candy? Yes, but that's really random, you know? I've always wished for a machine in the kitchen that would spin sugar, easily.... 20. Turkey or Chicken? I like chicken. And, it's a meat that we can get that is organic and humanely raised. I don't really like meat but I now must eat a little bit. So that was the compromise. 21. Hamburger or tuna helper? Not on your life! The food industry has a hulluva lot to answer for. 22. Raw or cooked veggies? Both, I like vegetables except for one, and it ain't okra because I like that one. 23. Do you like salad? If so, what is your favorite kind of salad? My favorite is something that we make at home. It is a build your own green salad with grilled chicken or albacore, pine nuts, cranberries, sliced cucumber/celery/onion, and Greek olives. Tomatoes sometimes. Alas, this year our "crop" failed to plant itself. The volunteer grew happily enough for itself in the shade, but only produced one pathetic little tomato with a soggy bottom. 24. Favorite pizza topping? Real Mozzarella, mushrooms, fresh garlic and black olive. 25. Do you like meat loaf? Only if it's made like a Wellington. I used to make that dish - delicious stuff!- and the kids loved it.

1) Gidget was a sitcom that ran only one season. Have you ever seen it? No, though I do like Sally Fields. I was busy that year with two babies under 2. And, we didn't watch TV because we didn't have one. Frankly, Mr. Z and I were so busy we didn't miss it at all!
2) Gidget is a high school student who is more interested in surfing and boys than in the books. When you were Gidget's age, was your top priority getting good grades? Or were you more involved in the social side of student life? Getting good grades. I knew it was the best way to get out of the poverty that we always lived in, what with my hyper violent father, and all.... But, I was given some big dreams. One of my mother's wealthy Aunts (that side of Mother's family, though selfish, was extremely wealthy) had promised to send me to college. Well, that didn't happen....
I still think she meant well. She probably just went gaga like the rest of those old aunties.
3) Gidget's father was nearly always unflappable when it came to his daughter's high-spirited shenanigans. Who is the coolest, calmest person you know? My mother was pretty much unflappable. She nearly cut her finger off one day. She said, "oh no!", quickly wrapped her hand up in a towel and ran to the neighbor's house to be driven to the hospital. Also, Mr. Z is quite calm, too. He helps me get my feet on the ground when I'm "UP" to "there"... or even "OUT" there......
4) Gidget spends as much time as she can at the beach, hanging out with her best friend Larue. Fair-skinned Larue doesn't share Gidget's passion for surfing and prefers to stay on the beach blanket, wearing a floppy hat that protects her from the sun. Are you a sun worshipper? Or, like Larue, are you careful about your exposure to the sun? Now? Very Careful. I was in the sun constantly when I was younger. I love the Pacific Ocean and was in it, or on it, as much as possible- and practical...
5) Gidget, the quintessential California girl, was created by Freidrich Kohner, an Austrian-born screenwriter. Can you think of another Austrian import? Once upon a time, a lot of glassware was imported from Austria. I don't know if that's still true. But, I'm pretty sure it is, the quality stuff anyway. Mother had a few pieces from a her paternal Grandmother but they are gone, "down the river of no return".
6) Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller wrote this week's Gidget theme. They also wrote the 1960 hit song, "Everybody's Somebody's Fool." When is the last time you felt foolish? Yesterday morning, Friday. I knit too long on Thursday, and hurt my wrist. I should know better than to do that!
7) This is the show that introduced Sally Field. She went on to win two Oscars and four Emmy Awards. When you think of Sally, what role comes to mind? "Places in the Heart". I also liked "Norma Rae" I've always loved the way she could really BE the person she portrayed. Not that many actors can do this.
8) Today Gidget is a grandmother. Sally reports that her grandchildren especially enjoy "sleepovers at Granny's." Where were you the last time you spent the night away from home? In Santa Cruz, but that feels just like home to me.
9) Random question -- Describe your perfect lazy afternoon. I have to laugh at this. These days, I pretty much have nothing else BUT lazy afternoons. But I'll play nice.... It would be to go to Shelter Island in the afternoon, have a little picnic, then sit and watch the sailboats run their Beer Can Regatta, or the big ships come in and out of the harbor until late evening. Some of them are HUGE..
An Aircraft Carrier is in the distance along the horizon....
I used to like to bird watch here too, as it's a great place to see many seabirds, but, of course, mostly Sea Gulls and Terns. But there was an injured Pelican one year. I called Wildlife Rescue and they sent someone who caught it. It had a very large fishhook embedded in it's wing.
And, I like to stay really late, at least I used to. Now that I'm old, not so much.

If you could take the train from anywhere to anywhere, where would 'anywhere' be? Santa Cruz, and the problem is that you can't take a train from HERE to THERE but nice try. But, It is where I want to go. The California train system absolutely SUCKS! I have to take two trains and a bus to get to Santa Cruz. What the Hey is WITH that anyway? Is this the 21st Century or isn't it? What will you always pack in your suitcase? Underwear What will you never pack in your suitcase? Expensive Jewelry BUT that's because I don't have any!
Fun Fact: The Bulgari Diamond Jewelry for a multi million dollar show in San Diego traveled in the belly of an Airplane in Plain luggage? Interesting isn't it? That name is spelled with a V but no one does that anymore.

1) Before today, did you know that the "I Love Lucy" theme had lyrics? No, I didn't. 2) Since its premiere in 1951, I Love Lucy has never been off the air. Are you a fan? My mother liked it so we did watch it but I'm not really a fan. 3) On the show, Ricky Riccardo supports his family by performing in a nightclub. Do you know anyone in show business? No, not anyone. 4) Lucy and Ricky's best friends are Fred and Ethel, their landlord and his wife. Are you friendly with your neighbors? I was friendly with two or three couples from way back, and we are still friends with the one who is still here. Some of the new ones now, too. I like my new neighbors. They are cool. 5) One of the most popular episodes has Lucy and Ethel working on the conveyor belt at a chocolate factory. When did you last have chocolate? This morning. I have it every morning. 6) Another famous episode has Lucy promoting Vitametavegimin. This tonic is made with vitamins, meat, vegetables -- and 23% alcohol. Do you read the ingredients statement before you take an over-the-counter medication? Or do you trust that it's safe because it's on the store shelf? I read EVERY thing. 7) I Love Lucy was filmed before a live audience. Desi Arnaz (Ricky) always maintained he could identify the chuckle of his mother-in-law, who attended every taping. Do you know anyone who has a distinctive laugh? Yes, but not just the laugh. I can still hear my mother's voice, and my daughter's, as well as the way they laughed. I can remember the voices of most of my aunts and some of the uncles and my grandpa's voice but not my grandmother. I'd bet that most people who sing have a good memory for these things.
I can still hear my Mom from when she called and the first thing she said was, "How About them Padres?!" The Padres had just won the pennant that year. I can still hear her voice saying that to me. It's a blessing I am forever grateful for. 8) The show ended when the Lucille Ball/Desi Arnaz marriage ended. Have you ever had to choose sides when a couple broke up? Yes, and it was heart breaking. Everyone was in shock. 9) Random question -- You must eat the same dinner, every day, between now and Labor Day. An identical menu, no deviation. What will you be having? When the heck is Labor Day? OK... It will be linguini with three different sauces on the side, and salad with garlic toast. And I'll have a beer with that. And I'll have a skinny slice of French silk chocolate pie. I do remember, when I was three, reluctantly eating a portion of a wild rabbit my grandfather had shot for dinner. I got a little round lead ball in my mouth with some fur, choked and spat it all out. That was pretty dramatic. Grandma glared at poor hapless Grandpa, who was responsible for skinning and cleaning it before handing it over to Grandma to prepare. So, he carefully checked over the rest of my rabbit bits after removing the whole plate from the table.
3.Is there anything pink within 10 feet of you? Yes, but only three things. I must remedy this immediately! How annoying! These three things are,: a pink stick on heart on my smart phone, a nail buff, which I can't show you because, well, it's ON the phone...

4.When is the last time you went to the mall? THE Mall as in the shopping mall? Ok, it has to be at least five years since I've been to a mall type mall. There is a Food mall at Liberty Station and that was last year. Summer or maybe fall. Nice summer place to get a meal. Then you can go for a stroll on Shelter Island.
5.Are you wearing socks right now? No, I'm bare of foot, and that's because it's 96°F outside, and it's about 80 inside. It's just not sock weather. Yesterday, Friday, it was 105°...so, this may be a trend. It's cooling off. Praise God!
6.When was the last time you drove out of town? Out of town.. Not counting the little cluster of towns that surround me here in the Badlands, that drive would have happened last year about this time, when we went to see the girls.
7.Have you been to the movies in the last 5 days? No, I haven't been inside a movie theater in 5 years or more. It's that disgusting thing they spray all over the place to get you to buy their popcorn. I'm willing to wait for any hot new thing to arrive on Netflix or even Amazon -or, amazingly, at the Library. Thank you, Diana!
8.What was the last thing you had to drink? Earl Grey tea. It makes me feel so much like a Duchess. The Duchess of Quandary?
9.What are you wearing right now? A Summer dress, and I'm barefooted. (Almost typed, "Bear footed")😉 Speaking of Bears, do you think that we should be allowed to have an open season on illegal bear hunters? I do.
10.Do you wash your car or let the car wash do it? Mister Z, is the Master of all things AUTO. He gets Jeeply washed at a car wash. I reckon he doesn't do it more than twice a year. This twice yearly event happens both before and after our longish trips when every manner of BUG gets stuck in the Grille.
11.Last food that you ate? I had a chocolate mint Cliff bar and a nectarine with tea. Boy am I ever a "duh" person. WAIT! I'll go get a handful of jelly bellies and scarf them down so as to make it all more interesting. BRB.....
12.Where were you last week at this time? I was right here, at the computer, typing out a Sunday Stealing that will publish on Saturday. I'm so "duh".
13.Have you bought any clothing items in the last week? No, but I did buy some lovely Chooz! I also have the exact same shoe in Black...

14.When is the last time you ran? I fast walked on a treadmill for a few months last year but that's not what you mean. Let's see? 🤔 That would be several years ago, before 2013. I don't run on my bionic knee. It has to last even though I don't care when that ax falls, only the HOW of it. No hit men please, even for a Best Birthday Present EVER post sort of thing.
15.What's the last sporting event you watched? A College Basketball final. On the big screen, at a Pub, on my birthday. It was very nice.

Saturday 9: "Chains"
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here 1) The song is about a woman who is in love with her boyfriend, but still attracted to someone else. Do you believe a woman can be in love with more than one person at a time? No. I don't believe it's possible. Attraction is not Love. Love is a deep commitment. 2) What about the male of the species? Carole was a favorite guest of David Letterman's. When she appeared on his show, he often commented on how impressed he was by her firm handshake. She credited her memorable grip to time spent milking goats on her Idaho farm. Have you poured goat milk on your cereal? Eaten goat milk yogurt or cheese? Yes. Grandma kept cows, and we drank their milk (and the home cheeses that were made from it )throughout WWII, though she kept no goats. And, the only animals my mother kept on her little farm were small ones which she raised for eggs and meat. But a nearby farmer kept goats and, later on, another kept cows. Mother traded for those products. So, yes, thanks to the "Farm Barter Network", I've consumed both goat's milk and goat cheese. And you expected a simple "yes", or "no". Buhahahahaha! 4) When it first came out, "Chains" was a favorite of 18-year-old George Harrison. It was at his recommendation that the Beatles added it to their early stage shows and even recorded it on their first album. When you were in high school, what was one of your favorite songs? "Earth Angel" was the first one that lept to mind. That's when we all were collecting recordings on little 45's. I tell you, it was so much fun to go into a record store and buy these little things.
But then there was "Rock around the Clock"! I have this record though, sadly, it's cracked.
5) In 1962, when this song was released, epic movies were popular on the big screen. The Longest Day was three hours long, and Lawrence of Arabia ran more than three hours and a half hours. Today's most popular movies are nowhere near that long. Do you think the average American has a shorter attention span today than he did in 1962? Sadly, I believe this is true. I blame all the poisons in the air and water. This is no joke. 6) In 1962, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy went on a two-week goodwill tour of India and Pakistan. She received a ceremonial "welcome necklace" in India. Made without jewels or precious metals -- just beads, sequins and paper -- it was valued by the First Lady for its delicate appearance and craftsmanship, and today it's on display at the John F. Kennedy Library. Tell us about a piece of jewelry that means a great deal to you, and why. I have my Grandmother's Locket. She died when I was ten, and my Grandpa sent it to mother, who gave it to me. 7) In Pakistan, Mrs. Kennedy made headlines by riding a camel. Have you ever ridden a horse, donkey, camel or elephant? I've only ridden horses. Well, maybe there was a donkey in there somewhere.. can't recall. I was going to ride a camel one year, at a circus, but the line was "a mile long" and I felt sorry for the camel. 8) Also in 1962, the New York Newspaper Guild went on strike, so the nation's largest city went 114 days without a single daily paper. In 2018, how do you get your news? I get it on the internet. The local Paper is a rag. I'd like to live in an enlightened city because here, the whole place seems teeming with and being run by Big Moneymen. My favorite newspaper person retired and went on to write for the Reader. That's something I DO read from time to time. 9) Random question -- Complete this sentence: Before I go to sleep, I always brush my teeth, take a couple of meds, and start to listen to the "...wind of my soul".

Today is the Fourth of July, and Houston, we have a problem....
This event is the sort of outrage that is happening to black citizens. Do you like that this fear is what million of American Parents live with? I don't.....
I've eschewed Politics; but this is Civil Rights. Human Rights. And it's right here, right now.
"This isn’t the story that I expected to be telling at this point in my life, having just received my doctorate from one of the top schools in the country. The bigger story of my life is growing up without knowing my father, losing my mother to illness when I was 8 and becoming a ward of the state.
Many people — black and white — stepped up to serve as mother, father, sister and brother to me. I persisted. The day after my foster mother kicked me out because I refused to join the National Guard, I applied to Stanford University and got in. After four years, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in engineering.
I’ve done everything in my power to defy the odds. Yet I feel as though I’m forever going to have to explain myself. As for the arresting officers, are they doing any explaining? Will they have to answer for the rest of their lives for their decision to wrestle me to the ground, pummel me and charge me with a crime?
A fellow student’s impulsive action and her hasty decision to call the police have put all of my hard work in jeopardy. The arrest, the charges and the trial — a scarlet letter to go with the dark brown skin that I will wear for the rest of my life."
Think about it. Think HARD about it. It happens far too often, and it's happened in San Diego in the past.
