 1) The lyrics tell us about a romantic summer night on a balcony. Does your home have a balcony? No balcony. 

2) Taylor Swift sings that her father warns her boyfriend to stay away, but she sees him anyway. Tell us about a time you defied your parents. Not my parents but the Universally hated paternal unit.  I went to the mountains with my collie on Father’s Day and he was offended. 

3) The castle in this video looks European, but it's in Arrington, TN. Castle Gwynn is the site of the annual Tennessee Renaissance Fair. This May the festival will be back, and among the items food vendors are offering are Scotch eggs. When did you most recently eat eggs, and how were they prepared?  Hard boiled - one- and with a piece of toast. 

4) Love Story is also the story of Jenny and Oliver in a book by Erich Segal and a movie starring Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal. Are you familiar with either the book or the movie? I watch the movie .

5) Taylor was born in Reading, PA. which is home to the Reading Railroad, one of the four railroads featured in Monopoly. Without looking it up, can you name the two most expensive Monopoly properties?  Park place and Boardwalk.  It sort of gets burned into your mind .. 😁😂

6) When she's not performing on stage, Taylor likes to keep it casual and prefers to wear cowboy boots. Tell us about your favorite footwear.  I like my Tevas. I have three pair. 

7) Taylor's brother, Austin Swift, is an actor and producer who studied photography at college. Think about the last picture you took. Did you use your phone, tablet or camera? (Feel free to share it, if you'd like.)  There.. the newest 

8) In 2008, the year this song was popular, the Emmy Award winning show Breaking Bad premiered. Were you a fan? I was a fan until the FBI agent was killed.  Then I never watched anymore of it.  They crossed a line with me. 

 

 9) Random question: You and your best friend sit down to write the story of how/when you met. Do you think the stories would be almost the same or quite different? (In other words, will you ...two remember the event the same way? I’m  certain it would be a little different.  But we really seemed to be instantly BFF.

 1. What issues are important to you? Civil Rights, Animal Rights, and putting the Earth First.  Also, anything that protects children, children ANYwhere.

2. Which breakfast foods are your favorite? I like muffins and a bit of cheese and some fruit.

3. How often do you change your hair style? Every year or so, I chop it all off into a Bob.

4. Your most peculiar talent or interests? I'm interested in how Quantum Physics fits into the so called Para normal or extra Sensory perception. I've been interested in this since I was a little five year old girl.  I had a dream that showed me iridescence and how it worked.

5. Something you’re a natural at Do you mean good at from the get go?  Drawing, Bowling, Tennis, languages.

6. Women who inspire you Eleanor Roosevelt. Hedi Lamar, all the women astronauts, Madame Curie, and Rosalind Franklin.

7. How often do you take a break from everything? Every single day. "Sometimes I sits and thinks, and sometimes I just sits."

Off the top of my head, that would be "Dancing Queen", and most anything by ABBA ...and really anything by Cindi Lauper, Blondie, Chicago, The Doobie Brothers, or Foreigner. 

9. Favorite carryout and takeaway foods to order Veggie Pizza, bean and rice tacos, and Chicken Salad from Panera.

10. People you like to spend time with My hubby, daughters, my sister, other Relatives, and old Friends.

11. Hobbies you started within the last year I already have too many hobbies, so many in fact that I can't even get to them on a rota lasting two weeks.

12. What scents, sounds, and sights of Spring do you like? Rain hitting the roof, the smell of rain on the grasses in the yard, flowers on the lime trees, roses, and all the little weeds growing in the parking strip.  We leave them there because they aren't weeds but escapees from urban gardens that the bees love to visit.

13. Cultural aspects you cherish and enjoy: All the Holiday seasons, Quaker Meeting, Lamb's Players.  The Arts. 

14. TV shows and films you liked this month nada for tv other than the detective shows on Netflix or Prime.

15. What do people usually come to you for help with?  Knitting advice.  Life is lived on lots of levels though if you are in the habit of listening and not firmly glued to your own understanding, you learn more.  

The Universe answers and it also asks.. It's good to be old and committed to the Contemplative Life.

Saturday 9: All I Ever Need is You...

Because I won't be blogging for the weekend....First, before the regularly scheduled Saturday 9...... 

An added bonus of Yarn Porn, i.e., the skeins, the burps and the vomit.  It's not Monday, anymore, the day this was created.  And it's back to the knitting..(well, it WAS Monday at the time this next yarny badness was typed in....).

A little BTW.....A bit about metadata, the sneak little codes that an iPhone puts on the pictures you take, and then share.  Make sure that they are not going up to any social media that you don't want them on.  There are aps that get rid of them, and you should use them. 

 Yarn snarls, as we knitters know, are time consuming to get rid of.   Prevention is the best CURE... 

Now HERE we see a Total Skein spit up!  This might be a tosser.

 

That kind of spit up above requires a lot more patience than I have alone.  My sister and I have teased one of that sort apart in a long, lazy afternoon of tea, cookies, and chit chat....

Sis can't help me anymore, so after fussing with the ball left over from the spit up, and a big handful of burped up yarn, and a wonky ball of yarn left over from the accident, it was time to get the winder out and hope for the best.  Thank god there was no blood involved...

First skein, on the right was a lovely gave up a proper little lady like burp, from the first skein. Exhibit A

This skein's mate was a witch, the one on the left and an Evil twin.  After fishing around inside it for a half an hour, a great big wad of yarn came out.  So, I stuck it in an old clean coffee pot, and ..... 

You can see it was a success.  This yarn will be the next short fingered gloves.  Or maybe a sock. IDK  Right now this yarn could be part of a Yarn bombing at the (Locally) famous Library tree..... 

Because it requires four hands

ALL I EVER NEED IS YOU (1971)

1) The lyrics tell us that some men search for silver, some for gold. Are you wearing either silver or gold right now?

 No, I'm not wearing any jewelry atm.

2) This song was a top 20 hit in the United States but sold much better in Canada. What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of our neighbor to the North?  

I think of Freeeeedommmm!  If we went there, we might never come back. And, we have always thought about it, or talked about it, since we were first married.

3) It's performed by one of pop's most successful duos, Sonny and Cher. Can you name another duo that made hit records?  

Yes, I can.  The Carpenters.  I loved their music.

4) In addition to their recording career, Sonny and Cher were TV stars. In a recurring sketch on their variety show, Cher played a "v-a-m-p: VAMP!" These characters were always sexy and seductive. Do you consider yourself a good flirt? 

I do not flirt.  I think it's not for me. 

5) Sonny dropped out of high school in Inglewood, CA. Cher dropped out of high school in Fresno. What's the last year of education you completed?  Three and a half years of college  I have a lot of credits.  After the twins were about a year old, I went back and got within reach of a bachelor's. But I didn't have the stamina for night classes that were 30 miles away anymore.  I'm so glad that the colleges got together and let the girls go to the closest JC which is a little over a mile from our house. 

6) Sonny first became Mayor of Palm Springs, and then represented the district in Congress. The city erected a statue in Sonny's memory. Tell us about a statue or monument in your town.  The big bronze statue of El Cid in Balboa Park.  It's a beautiful statue but it isn't Balboa, who was beheaded for telling the Spanish king that the Governor of California was mistreating Native Americans - might this Governor have been the king's brother?  Uncle?  Sibling?  Oh well.  Señor Balboa, esto me pone triste.

 

7) Cher is often described as outspoken. Ask her for her opinion on anything from politics to plastic surgery, and you will get a frank answer. Does "outspoken"  apply to you, as well?  If anyone asks me my opinion, if I have one, I will tell it.  Frankly, I am Outspoken

8) In 1971, when this song was popular, Sears sold a portable manual typewriter. Described at the time as, "lightweight for travelers," it weighed 10 lbs. Today the average laptop weighs half that. Do you own a typewriter?  Yes, though I regret having sold my mother's little blue Remington portable. It was an electric.  I could kick myself. And I regret letting the twins "Borrow" my little black Spanish character portable.  One of them set it down at a bus stop and forgot it when she got on the bus. 

 

9) Random question -- Which has gotten you out of more scrapes: your smarts, or your charm?  Your charm can't prevent you getting into scrapes in the first place, so I'll go with the smarts.  Having had a childhood where you learned very early on to avoid trouble from a violent person by caution, charm didn't have a chance to raise it's cute little head.

1. The best story your parents or grandparents tell about the good ole days. 

My belovéd maternal grandparents (the ones that my mother and I lived with in Ohio during the war) died in the early 1950's, before I was 12, and I didn't even meet my paternal grandmother until I was 13.  

My maternal Grandparents went where the work was in the Great Depression.  Most people who could, did.  

Grandpa repaired and operated what is called Heavy Equipment- road graders, and bulldozers etc.  Grandma and my mother and her sisters all went along.  There were some pictures of them on the trail but they have long since disappeared.  Mother said that grandma had her singer sewing machine with a hand crank on it and she sewed for her girls and for other people as well. They all lived out of a big black car and pitched a tent while grandpa repaired anything that needed it.  They traveled all over the place, wherever the equipment went.

My paternal Grandma and I didn't get to talk very much, until the 1970's, about anything to do with that side of the family.  

By that time, I was a young mother and wanted to know the heritage of my children.  She was just a sweet and very pious, simple little farmer in Colorado who grew her own food and ground her own corn for tortillas and such.  

She did tell me that my surname was, indeed, French. She also told me about going back and forth across the so called Mexican border, exactly as her family and kin had always done, despite the restrictions. She also gave me a lot of names and family history, some of it translated by her daughter, my aunt. People forget that there were a lot of French families that came to New Mexico and surrounds, when France ruled in Mexico. 

2. The best things in life are... Clean food and Water, but mostly not any material things. The best things are kindness and fellow feeling.  Love.. smiles... joking and gentle teasing.  Music!  Guitars and violins!

3, Things that drive me batty Lies and liars. Also, mean people, like those who decide to cut you dead without any reason at all except within themselves they are somehow inadequate.  They assassinate a person's character because they themselves are very unhappy.  We all know a few of these people.

Happily, I've only known a few. One was a treacherous club leader who seemingly made a habit of befriending people and then turning on them and picking them apart before the group.  People like her are dreadfully sick in the head. 

4. A place I'd like to live and why I would like to live in Northern California, around Arcata.  It's lovely there, and it's still in California. Barring that little city, I'd like to live anywhere in the Northern or Central counties along the coast, well, in Humboldt County, as long as it's within shouting distance of the shore.

5. The best thing I've ever found ... material?  or a living being... human?  Human is my DH,  and the material side......let's see.... 

I once found several pieces (elements) of gold jewelry that were scattered all over the county: one right in front of my house in the gutter, and the others were at three different place.  

There was a letter, "I", and an letter, "A" -both capitals - two Identical rings that were part of some other thing like earrings, but were Identical to each other.  

One ring was at the beach, on the lawn where we picnicked a lot, and the other was at Balboa Park where we usually went for picnics as well.  It was all very, very spooky.

These sort of things put my feet on a path from which I've never departed.  Forgive an old lady for telling her secrets, but life can by absolutely Magical sometimes.  It's something one does not forget.   

6. The best thing that happened recently is.

My sister is finally vaccinated, and my daughter, the last one, has appointments. 

I've worried so long over this.  And now it's going to be lifted for so many more people. 

7. I admire people who... speak out against the madness and who are honest and brave.

8. What makes me special?  I'm not special.  I'm very ordinary, and just try to always be kind and loving, and pray every day to be brave. 
9. I am looking forward to... seeing my sister and the other belovéd ones. 
10. Things that scare me Wars, and the madness that is running through daily life at the moment.  

I'm old and have seen my people go through so much and always we had the will to work together and make a better world for the children.  I think we may be seeing the end of that will.  That's scary. 

11. Complaints I have I want all people to stop the lying they are doing to themselves and each other.  This is not the time to get petty or pout.  It's time to go to work and save the country for the children.  We OWE this to them.
12. I could never live without... Hope

13. Things that make me laugh Babies laughing, and of course, Satire, quirky humor, and Irony.

14. What is a new skill that you would like to learn? I would love to learn to dry tomatoes from the garden. 

15. What brightened your day today? Our little dog didn't fight us when we cared for his eye this morning.  He just waited patiently for us to clean it and put the medicine in. He is so dear to our hearts. 

OH dear God, I love this little dog.

 Saturday 9: Don't Rain on My Parade (1968)

 1) Is rain expected where you are today?  No, but it is sort of misty which is the usual weather for this part of the world this time of the year.

2) In this song, Barbra Streisand warns everyone to not spoil her optimistic mood. What is something you're feeling really good about today?  I just yesterday heard that my sister had gotten her first vaccine.  She is severely disabled and should have been in the first group to be vaccinated. Today I learned that one of the twins has an appointment for her first shot appointment.  Hope that you all are getting such good news. 

 

3) She sings that life is candy and the sun is a ball of butter. Which have you consumed more recently, candy or butter?  I eat a little chocolate every morning, so candy I suppose.  I seldom eat butter, even though I love the taste of it.

4) This song is from the musical Funny Girl. It's based on the true story of Fanny Brice, who starred on Broadway, in movies and on the radio between 1910 and 1951. At the beginning of her career, no one thought she would succeed because of her unconventional looks, but she forged ahead, saying, "I make things happen for me." Are you focused, like Fanny?  I'm a "go with the flow gal" now.  I used to make things happen but that was when we were doing a lot of things with the girls, Ballet classes, soccer Practice and a short session of Brownie scouting.  Etc...Fighting to get my child in a special school so that she could be in advanced classes.  All the things that a mother has to do including disciplining and being strict so that you don't inadvertently raise a criminal.

5) When the stage version of Funny Girl was in pre-production, the part of Fanny was offered to actress Anne Bancroft, but she felt the songs were too difficult for her. Singer Eydie Gorme dropped out when told her husband, Steve Lawrence, could not play the male lead. Carol Burnett said she'd love to do it, but also admitted she thought she was wrong for the role. Running out of time and options, producer Ray Stark decided to give lesser-known Barbra Streisand a try ... and the rest, as they say, is history. Has there ever been a time in your life when you were glad things didn't work out as you'd originally planned?  Anyone over ten years old has had things go down and has known  immediately that it was a trajectory change; so yes, I have... and I've been glad...

 

6) Funny Girl was the top grossing movie of 1968. #2 was 2001: A Space Odyssey. Given the choice, would you rather watch a musical or a sci-fi flick?  In this case, with this choice, I would pick A Space Oddity - o darn that wasn't the choice.. I'll still pick the sci-fi... hehehe

Fellow Niners, here's a Blondie for you all... because I learned how to do it after the changes.....finally!  Music is the best thing  that Humans do, besides learn to love unconditionally, like the Angels do......

7) Streisand's favorite color is burgundy because it reminds her of when, as a little girl, she received a hand-knitted sweater as a gift and wearing it made her feel special. What color is your favorite sweater?  I have a very dark forest green woolen pullover that I love. It goes with us when we travel.  It's THE most AWESOME sweater.  I always feel better when I'm wearing it.   

8) In 1960, she began performing in New York clubs but she had a hard time getting work because she was only 18 and most nightclubs wouldn't hire a girl not yet old enough to drink. Do you remember your first legal alcoholic beverage? What did you have?  Legal.. hmmm... lol  I was drinking far earlier that so I can't remember when the first legal one came around.  I was already married and already a mother when it became "Legal" for me to drink.  heeheehee

9) Random question: How many people know the real you.  My sister, my husband and my friend Diana, a minister in a neighborhood church who had an open mind. They all know the real me.  They know and work on some of the same questions and problems that the spirit raises in us.

Almost Wordless Wednesday: Short Fingered gloves, socks..mending Miss Maeve

Well actually, forget about wordless.  I've got knitting stuff to report on.  Two pairs of socks and one new pair of sf gloves.... and then there is Maeve Binchy's lovely book which I'm re-reading.

1. You have just been hired to clean your own home, what is your first complaint?  "Say, most of this stuff has to be sorted into piles first."

2. Are you able to ignore a ringing telephone? Yes, it goes to voice mail.. easy peasy

3. How often do you allow a ringing phone to go to voice mail? The land line?  Always.  The cell, I check to see who it is, and answer if I know them. 

4. Do you answer your cell phone, out in public, every time it rings? Or do you silence it and get back to it when you’re in a more private area?  I turn the ringer way down, or off, in public places.  

5. How often would you say you’re on your home phone? Almost never. And I never answer it.   Your cell phone? Almost never for calling. Several times a day for Texts. 

6. Do you like talking on the phone or do you view it as a necessary communication tool?  It's a tool to stay in touch with family and friends, all of whom know I don't answer calls unless I can. So they text.

7. When did you last go for a bike ride?  The last time I fell on my Mountain Bike.  Somewhere in 2009 when I got a knee replacement.

8. Do you own a bike? No. 

9. Given the most popular New Year’s resolution of losing weight, would you consider putting bicycle riding as one of your exercise options? Why or why not?  No.  I'm losing so much weight as it is that I don't need to exercise for that reason.  I just started playing WII tennis again which is safe and fun for me. I loved to ride my bike and rode down to the lake several times a week before I couldn't any more. I rode a bike and owned a bike from the time I was a tot.  Having to give it up was a dreadful time for me. 

10. If you had to name a smell that always makes you nostalgic, what would it be? What sorts of memories does the smell evoke?  Bread baking.  I did, for some time, make all the bread my family ate.  It was a wonderful time in my life.  I was gearing up to go back to Uni and earn a degree.  Life was being handled properly, you know?

11. What did you do over the weekend? No detail is too small. This is your journal, so tell us about the mundane tasks in your life.  Nothing comes to mind. 

12. If it weren’t for my blog, I’d not likely be able to remember what I did back in 2004 and all the ensuing years hence.  

13. When was the last time you replied “because I said so”? Do you find yourself saying that a lot? Or do you prefer to tell people WHY you want them to do something for you.  The last time I said that the twins were probably 12 years old.  That is almost 40 years ago. 

14. What is the worst gift you’ve ever received? A rather horrid. little purse from someone.  I'm pretty certain a point was being made.

15.  Tell us the worst gift you’ve ever given. What was the reaction of the recipient?  Probably a little box of butane cylinders for their fancy butane lighter.  The person graciously laughed and said, "And, here I was planning to quit smoking."

Would you rather go for a long walk along a beach or a hike in the woods?  Rather?  I would rather go hiking especially in a forest,  but I love being close enough to go down to the Ocean whenever I want to.

What's something you have done well lately? (Go ahead. We want to hear about it!)  I'm happy about some things I've been working on but the threads are still being gathered.  We'll see...

For the awards show last month, Maren put a lot of work into her look, including lightening her hair and lipstick and reshaping her brows. She was surprised when saw on social media that people confused her with reality star Khloe Kardashian. How long does it take you to prepare to face the world (on an average day, not for an internationally telecast awards show)?  About 10 minutes.  Brush and twist up my hair, fasten it with a clip, wash my face, and E, Voila!

 

6) Experimenting with hair and makeup comes naturally to Maren. Her parents have owned the same hair salon for decades. She and her sister played there as children and took turns working the reception desk when they were in high school. Do you have a hair appointment scheduled?  No.

 

7) Mom and Dad do not go out of their way to play Maren's songs in their salon. They don't want to "bombard" clients with her music, just because she's their daughter. But, if one of Maren's songs happens to come on, they are naturally very proud. Where were you the last time you had to listen to someone else's choice of music? (Bank, doctor's office, friend's car, etc.) Did you enjoy it, or did you wish you could change the station?  I don't listen to the music.  But if I did change it, It would all be "Foreigner", "Doobie Brothers", and "Chicago"...

 

8) Maren says her favorite foods are tacos and tortillas. When did you most recently eat Mexican food?  My Hubby made us Quesadillas, last night. 

9) Random question: What do you call that thing in your living room? Is it a sofa, couch, or a davenport?  There's a Hide-a-bed, and we call it a sofa.

1) Which do you prefer: colored hard-boiled eggs, chocolate marshmallow eggs, or plastic eggs with coins inside?

I like to color and decorate eggs still. Sometimes we do this, and sometimes we don't anymore.

2) What's your favorite color of Peeps (yellow, purple, or pink)?
OK.. I have not eaten a Peep for decades but Pink is my favorite color of ANYTHING, so I'll go with pink.

3) All this talk of sweets is making Sam hungry. What's for lunch?

Greek Yogurt, plain.. lemon ginger tea.. *raises her Mug of Tea to the Gal*

4) This song was introduced by country singer Gene Autry and it's still a favorite. Please share some of the lyrics. (And you're on your own; Sam didn't include a link to the song this week.  Nyet! lol

5) Gene Autry was so popular that a town in Oklahoma named itself for him. Have you ever been to Oklahoma?  If the transcontinental railroad goes through it, I'm sure I've been through Oklahoma.  

I was nearly a 2 year old when Mother, with Dad, took me with them when they came back home to California from Ohio.  She and I went back to Ohio when I was 2 and 4 years old for my little brothers' births.  

6) He and his horse Champion also had a TV show. Can you name another famous horse?  Let's see....  There is Hidalgo, Trigger, Silver, Diablo and Scout.  And, Seabiscuit of course!

  

 
7) Gene Autry also recorded "Rudolph, The Red Nosed Reindeer," and it was, of course, wildly popular, too. Who is your favorite recording artist?  I'm old, always a singer, and my memory goes back to the forties so this is not easy to pick a single artist.  Pavarotti is my favorite male opera star.  The Andrews Sisters are my favorite female singing group.. etc etc... so many others..  Dooby Brothers, Simon and Garfield. On and On....

8) In 1950, the year Autry recorded this song, Diner's Club issued the first credit card. Think of the last thing you purchased. Did you use cash, a credit card, a debit card, an e-wallet service (Visa Checkout, Paypal, Google Pay, Apple Pay ...) or a check?  Paypal, a donation.

9) Easter is recognized as the start of the spring season. What are you looking forward to this spring?  EVERYONE having their COVID19 vaccination!  I mean the wise among us.  I'd hate to see natural selection played out by a virus, but then, I'm sure viruses have pulled this off before, the sneaky little devil spawn.  Natural Selection by the cruel fickle finger of fate.
