Election Protection Number from the NY Times Article

The New York times is giving this number (below) in their article about the weakest link in our democracy being the voting registries HERE

Call Election Protection at 1(866)OUR-VOTE. or, in all numbers: 1(866)687-8683 if you are denied your right to vote. Hopefully it will not be jammed on that day. That has happened before that crucial numbers were jammed.

If you haven't been voting, now is the time to give yourself back a voice in our Democracy. Don't let the foundation be nibbled away under your feet. It may not seem important but your vote is one of your most important tools to be sure your voice is counted. Wear your "I have Voted" sticker prominently and proudly on election day.

This is OUR country. We are the only ones who can really save it, not anyone else. Those "public servants, even the president of the United States, work for us, remember that. They serve the people. That's what the founders of the nation were talking about. That's why politicians are always saying about themselves, "I wanted to enter into public service". Well, make them remember us, the public, when they are serving. It's not a time for them to be helping themselves to everything that isn't theirs but is held in trust for future generations as well.

I'm going to go eat some cherry pie, and try to remember that even the "Great" can be tempted to help themselves to public lands and public money. We are all that stands in their way.

Help spread the truth about ACORN

ACORN has been enabling voters, since 1970, to overcome the defacto jim crow laws put in place to keep them from exercising their fundamental right to vote, as legal citizens of the United States.

Disenfranchisement has an ugly history in this, the oldest Democracy still in existence. It's time to stop a well organized band of thieves from stealing another election by limiting voting rights to the fewest possible citizens in areas in which they succeeded before in disrupting the election process.

Please listen to the truth. Truth is more important to your vision of the future than is fear, which has been raining down on our heads from practically the beginning of McCain's candidacy. Oh yes, the lies he has told just to hang onto power and wield it. That is not honorable in any one's Book of Ethics.

I have a very good base in Catholic traditions. My Father and all his family were Catholics, and I almost decided to become a Nun when I was 17. I've always been a believer, a sort of Congenital Christian, like William Buckley.

I still say that this small statue is a replica of a graven, thanks anon, image reproduced in ceramic. I love my little statue and she is a reminder of all the beautiful things that Mary was. All of them. Holy, Kind, Compassionate, Brave, Beautiful, and Gentle.

Please sign your name next time so that I will know if you are just some sort of republican operative picking a fight, or if you seriously believe that I don't know what I'm talking about.

Mind of Tao meets Fashionista

This battle has been going on for over 30 years. Sometimes the Mind of Tao wins and the Fashionista who loves to sew and knit gives up the color wheel and retreats into deeper philosophies. This may be news to my children but it is so. I Ching, and the study of it should have taught me better lessons like, "Politics Is A Tug of War".

I'm now ready to listen, one reason being that we normally have a lot of people running for president who are never heard but whose IDEAS usually are co-opted by the major two parties. We aren't really talking fringe people, because the Republicans have succeeded, just, in getting themselves divorced from the fringy right wing of their domain. The people I'm talking about are the decent and fair minded middle folk, always under represented. You know, the ones with really workable ideas that don't waste time waiting for the politicos to change horses "in mid stream".

Ah well, someday the color wheel will run over me again, and I will probably start sewing and knitting. If I'm silent til then, it doesn't mean I've died or anything. This for the 8 of you who look in from time to time.

ValScot reminded me that spinning wheels should not be let go to waste. I'm grateful for that. Thank you, ValScot. It's time to spin to a rhyme that must have been made just for me:

Antidotes

 



Does this stuff really work, this dark chocolate therapy? I've been eating a lot of it lately in three-a-day binges, and treating each little hopeful message as if it came down from Heaven amidst lightning bolts and big BIG voices- Cecil B. DeMille voices from the Ten Commandments. Well darn, come to think of it, that was a silent film wasn't it? Is this one THE first commandment from Mother Dove, or did she borrow it from Omar Khyam?

Also, the kitchen has a little Goddess now. I'll show you tomorrow. It would have been a tall, beautiful White porcelaine statue of the Goddess Kwan Yin, but DH broke her head clean off throwing his boot across the room because he was mad at himself for leaving it there and tripping me! So, my mother's beautiful statue died in a beheading. I stood for a long time holding the two pieces of my beautiful statue in my hands, speechless with the suddeness of it all. Why didn't he just whack himself on the side of the head with his boot!

These are all knitting avoidance topics, you know. I'm also attempting to stay ways from anything political that will just break off three more rungs of the ladder out of the mud pit that readers of political blogs find themselves in.

I need to go into the snows of Yosemite and stay there for the next 10 weeks with my dog, my knitting, books and my chocolate. But there really isn't enough snow there at the moment. I really need to go to sleep for three months. Think of it, Three months of Peace from Lies and more damn lies.

I'm not Knitting

I think this is probably due to exhaustion and is the closest thing to depression that happens to me. Or just maybe .... maybe it is depression and only FEELS like exhaustion. I want to sleep for three weeks. Or until the election is over.

The ballots came last week and we are going to vote and take them to the registrar and hand them over, eyeball to eyeball! I don't trust anything anymore. Is that also a sign of depression, not trusting anyone to do with the elections?

I've never been actually depressed so there is nothing to compare this to. IN THE PAST I've been sad for long periods of time but it had good reasons. Isn't depression when you haven't got any reason for feeling this way?

I'm tired and this isn't helping. Lol. I need to eat some pasta and some cake. Lots of carbs. That might do it.

Good night. Sweet Dreams! Oh, I just watched a great movie called "Widow's Peak". I'll tell you nothing about it, but it sort of cheered me up for a few hours. Also, Amy Tan's book is funnier than any of her other work. In fact, it shows that she's got a terrific sense of humor. "The Opposite of Fate". I think you'll like it. Night night!

Once and For All! For Anonymous....

I haven't been posting any anonymous comments and it's because I'm tired of them, frankly. I can't figure out if it's a friend who really is concerned that I am being hoodwinked, someone who is terrified that we are going to get stuck at the "last minute" without a candidate, or someone who is just a troll, spreading lies. If either of the former two, thank you, but it's over.. and if the latter, you won't get another mention, either way. Friend or Foe.

But this is the last word on Obama's citizenship. It's from Truth or Fiction Dot Co..

I'm not taking my blog private, and I'm not going to stop accepting anonymous comments.

A Sweet, sweet Story...

K is for Kitchens

K is for Kitchens. So mundane and practical a topic but still.... Our various kitchens have been so important in the life of my family, as they probably are in any family.

The kitchen at our long time residence used to be more the "heart" of our home. Though, until recently, it was pretty much a hodge-podge, it used to be full of family activities like food preparation, bread making, cooking, baking, and even meal eating, because we had only a tiny eating area for the first 6 years here. Six of us sat around the kitchen table. DH made two 6x10 chunks of wood into booster seats for the little twins.

When the twins were born, shortly after we moved here, DH and I knew we needed more room, and another bathtub! So, after much economy and 6 years later, we remodeled to get just that. There was not enough money for the kitchen but the Great Room took on a new dining room table with eight chairs. It had three leaves and eight chairs! Now, company could come over and we could have dinner parties, and, on the holidays, we could have both sides of the family, too! Yay! Our little kitchen table became smaller, to serve for breakfasts, and as a pie crust rolling, bread kneading, kid's craft, all round workhorse of a table, and still in the kitchen.

In that small area we had a chrome and melamine table and chairs that we bought for $5 from our former landlord, a very kind lady. I wish I still had it! But alas, many years later, it went the way of all things for which there is no room, Off to the Salvation Army to be replaced by something half it's size, which was round.

As the family grew up, "Many hands made light the work" as we made bigger and bigger pans of food to feed our growing girls and ourselves. We made pans of egg rolls, huge stir fries of vegetables and beef or chicken, fried rice, or pizza, tortillas, tacos by the dozen, chili, corn bread, Syrian kibby, hummus, tabooli, and even a few times, delicious time consuming baklava and pastries. My goodness, all this food we have made for our own little army! We even grew mung bean sprouts under the sink, and made cheese with buttermilk - an Indian recipe from Sunset Magazine, and yogurt from another Sunset recipe. It was just brilliant fun!

Kitchens are the best rooms of the house for family gatherings. One bit of family lore is that my mother in law had..has... an incredibly tiny kitchen but somehow all the women would all manage to stuff ourselves into it to talk, laugh and trade stories, while the kids all hung around our feet.


In the old kitchen cupboard, I printed out a poem that I found in a Family Circle Magazine, and it was said to date back to the Great Depression, here it is:

"Thank God for dirty dishes;
They have a tale to tell.
While others may go hungry,
We're eating very well
With home, health, and happiness,
I shouldn't want to fuss;
By the stack of evidence,
God's been very good to us."

K is for Kitchens. Oh how I love this room, in all it's modern beauty, it still remains a kitchen full of memories.

May you enjoy your kitchens as much as I have enjoyed all mine, only one of which I tell you about in this little tale from the way back machine.

Triplets

 


While I was dozing late last night, while reading my book by Amy Tan who talks about such thing as dreams, etc., I had a tiny dream. It lasted only for a second, but in it a baby tortoise raced up to me (now in real life they don't move THAT fast)as soon as I stepped out of the side door. Just a few minutes ago, I told DH that he should check for another baby, and lo and behold, there one was, right out on the flat for DH to see. This one is going to be called Mosquito, after a sweet little foster tortoise we once had. Mosquito is on the top, Dusty to the right, and Milagro is to the left in front.

And yes, Baby Luann, they eat roses and rose leaves. This is how they kept themselves well and happy for a week or so until we found them.

To all interested present or future Herpetologists, that is a little scat in the corner, and proves that at least one of the babies is eating enough. ;-)

Mother Poko Ono Regards her Offspring

 


For Baby Luann and other little fans of the Tortoise Family. Poko is getting ready to go into hibernation, we couldn't find the new tortoise's half brother Lucky. He is deep within his hole and won't come out unless and until it warms up enough to do so, and Pappa Churchie is under the deck, which is his favorite hidey hole. He is ready to hibernate too, but we will pull them all in and put them in a place that will not be too cold if the weather turns down sharply to deep frosts like the last two years. Churchie is about 62 years old, so he needs to be protected. This isn't the desert where they can dig down to a place that gives them an even 55 degrees.

Baby Luann, the baby tortoises are eating something called Kale, now, as well as grass. They will stay awake (not be let hibernate) for about four years. I hope you like the pictures. Hug your Mom and Dad for me, ok, sweetie?

And now for Some Beauty

 
This is a basket of organic fresh herbs at the farmer's market today. It looks absolutely luscious, doesn't it.

Pictures or tortoises will be tomorrow. I'm not knitting at all. But it will return sometime I'm sure. I'm reading Amy Tan's book of essays called, The Opposite of Fate.

I just finished reading Vinegar Road, a beautifully written book about what happens in a family with lots of dark secrets. This is a family where no one ever tells about what has happened in the past, so they live twisted lives. It's a story about how destructive of dreams and hopes that is, to not get help with abusive childhood issues.

A person whose mind is full of things other than pretty stories, should really talk it out with someone else who can help. It's the only way to not pass it on and ruin other lives. It's the most important gift that you can give to your own new family.

Just when you thought it was safe to turn on the TV......

It took some weeks to settle the ultimately irrelevant and immaterial question of whether Arizona Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, was eligible to become president. Irrelevant and immaterial because, should McCain win the election, can you imagine the courts invalidating his triumph by declaring him constitutionally ineligible to hold the office to which he had just been elected? Been down that road, as I recall.

Nevertheless, senators from both parties (Patrick Leahy and Tom Coburn) and constitutional scholars of the left and right (Lawrence Tribe and Theodore Olsen) examined the law and the facts and announced that McCain, who was born to American parents in a U.S. naval hospital in the U.S.-administered Panama Canal Zone, met the Second Amendment's requirement that a president must be a "natural-born citizen."

The Constitution doesn't define "natural-born citizen;" as generations of jurists have pointed out, much of that document's brilliance lies in its ambiguity. But a little research showed that the question had actually been asked and answered way back in 1790, when the very first Congress passed a statute declaring that "the children of citizens of the United States, that may be borne beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural-born citizens of the United States." The Senate unanimously passed a resolution recognizing that "John Sidney McCain III is a natural-born citizen." On to more important things.

Or so we thought.

Now making the Internet rounds is a posting questioning whether McCain's presumptive Democratic opponent, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama is a natural-born citizen and therefore constitutionally qualified to be president. I suppose it was only a matter of time.

Anyway, this particular post, whose authorship is unclear, suggests that Obama is "not legally a U.S. natural-born citizen under to the law on the books at the time of his birth...". According to the poster, if only one parent was a U.S. citizen at the time of birth, the citizen-parent "must have resided in the United States for at least ten years, at least five of which had to be after the age of 16." Obama's father, of course, was not an American citizen, having been born in Kenya. That leaves his mother, who was a natural-born citizen, but who was only 18 when Obama was born, on August 4, 1961. In the poster's opinion, Obama fails the constitutional test because his citizen-mother had not resided in the U.S. for five years after the age of 16--not old enough, at the time of Obama's birth, "to qualify her son for automatic U.S. citizenship."

Now pay strict attention, because I'm only going to explain this once: Is Barack Obama a natural-born citizen of the United States and therefore eligible to become president? The answer is yes, according to Ron Gotcher, a noted California immigration lawyer and The Swamp's resident expert on presidential eligibility.

"The poster's confusion," Gotcher writes, "is over the concepts of jus sanguinis and jus soli." Under jus sanguinis, a person's citizenship is transmitted "by the blood" - by inheritance from his or her parents or grandparents. In the United States, we recognize citizenship through parentage in a number of cases.

But it is not necessary to look to the statutes that deal with citizenship through jus sanguinis, since Senator Obama's citizenship derives from jus soli - citizenship through place of birth.

According to Gotcher, "The Fourteenth Amendment commands that "[a]ll persons born or naturalized in the United States , and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside."

"This was clarified by the Civil Rights Act of April 9, 1866, which provided that 'All persons born in the United States and not subject to any foreign power are declared to be citizens of the United States.'"

"Senator Obama was born in the State of Hawaii two years after it became a state on Aug.21, 1959 As such, he acquired United States citizenship automatically at birth. While it is not necessary to go into all of the other legal errors contained in the posting (and there are many), the simple fact is that, with rare exceptions (children of diplomats), everyone born in the United States is a citizen of the United States at birth."

But what about the age of Obama's mother? Remember jus soli--citizenship through place of birth? (c'mon--there IS going to be a quiz). In that case--which happens to be Obama's case--the age of the parents has nothing to do with anything. Under jus soli even the children of illegal aliens are U.S. citizens at birth--just ask the pregnant women from Mexico near the end of their third trimester who try to sneak across the border in hopes their child will be born in a San Diego hospital and leave with a U.S. birth certificate clutched in his or her tiny hand.

Except for the children of diplomats, every child born in the U.S. is a natural-born U.S. citizen, period. The parents could be citizens themselves, could be from France, could be Coneheads. Nothing else matters. Only if the child is born OUTSIDE the United States to one citizen-parent does the issue of the parents' age, citizenship, or whatever, come into play.

"All that matters is that the child is born here, " Gotcher says. "This is the reason that you are hearing so much fuss in Congress about changing the law that grants 'birthright citizenship.'" But even such a law, however unlikely to pass, would not be retroactive. If Barack Obama wins the presidential election he can begin choosing the furniture for the Oval Office without watching for immigration agents over his shoulder.

It's Twins!!

 
DH found another little jewel like creature, who will now be called Milagro because DH wanted to call the first one Dusty as it was very dusty when found.

The next door neighbor found another one, but it had expired in the heat of the neighbor's driveway, poor little thing. There could be more. We told our neighbor that if he should find another one, he should keep it and raise it. They also have three tortoises. He told us that his wife would be very happy to do that.

If these two little ones live to be five years old, past infancy and childhood, that means we will have five tortoises. That has to be enough for any one family to handle. I'm really over the moon! What a delight. They have to be kept up all year for several years, no hibernation for these tiny ones, so it's going to be fun.

And, I am through with politics because Palin has taken this where it should never have gone. She has no sense. And, neither does McCain, apparently, and he must approve of this baiting that's going on, or she wouldn't be doing it.

The charges she's made were false and the matter was long ago laid to rest, even by her own party. Many people could be hurt, physically, by what the McCain campaign, in it's desperation, are attempting. I just won't give it any more space here.

DH came inside last evening, about 5:30, and called out from around the corner of the hallway, "Don't look! Close your eyes; close them tight and don't open them." He came closer to me and said, "Hold out your hand, and this may move a little but don't be afraid, it won't hurt you." He put something in my hand and I felt those tiny nails of it's feet. When I opened my eyes, I saw that I was looking down at a tiny miracle, one I never expected to see again in my lifetime because so many nests had failed in the last 10 years. There was Milagro, perfect replica of her parents, blinking at me from tiny brown eyes. It was love.

I am calling this one a girl because she is flat like Poko Ono, her mother. I haven't a clue at this age how to tell them apart, in fact I don't think it's possible to do so.

DH found it, upside down in the garden. I'm sure the others are all hiding out. There could be a dozen of them or more. I hope we find the rest before the birds do. And it's dusty so maybe it just dug it's way out of that nest that it's mother dug in the rose bed. They usually hatch out at the end of September. It's very flat like it's mother but has brown eyes like it's daddy. I am so excited!

Aches and Pains

 



This small Maeve Binchy book, written in colaboration with her friend and illustrator, Wendy Shea, will keep you entertained for a pleasant hour or so as Ms. Binchy takes you through the various fears of aches and pains in an aging body. It's a lot of fun to read, and it gives some very good advice, particularily on, "chest pain". Prepare to laugh, a lot!

Ancient Giant

 
They are really bigger than you can imagine them to be. How much of this unique and ancient forest was there before it was logged? Since the trees existed with large open spaces that were of other species of conifers, it's very difficult to estimate the original size of the forests. It isn't hard to estimate the amount of board feet that were hauled out of them, however. It was a brutal amount.
