Manly sweater, first 20 rows of pattern

I had to dash away to a medical appointment so didn't get to add a blurb to this picture.

The 20 rows are of the pattern, and the next row is another crossing of the cables. It is a great pattern and lovely to knit once you see the whole of it, and can start "reading" the knitting. AR told me that I'd love knitting in the round, and she was right. Thank you AR! Also, Karen, who is my Aran Isle guru, thank you for encouraging me to knit it, and saying that I really could do this thing. I'm just overwhelmed that this sweater is so far along, finally. Yay!

I've had quite a few problems with this sweater that had nothing to do with the pattern itself but arose because I just don't seem to concentrate with the same intensity to detail as once was the case! Senior moments weighed heavily on this poor hapless sweater. I've fallen back in love with it, but I am allergic to the yarn.. Alpaca. The definitive moment was when, having taken an antihistamine my flu like symptoms cleared up! I'll try this again, to knit without taking Benedryl, since I am the only one in my "control group".

Good ol' DH, when he was told of the possible allergic reaction, and that I would knit this sweater if it killed me but I would not be knitting him another one with Alpaca in it, said, "Why can't you just plug up your nose?

Such a Gent! lol!

PS. The yarn is an absolutely perfect match. Having miscalculated the amount needed - Senior moment - I was short a whole lot! Re-ordered two years later, and the same yarn matched! How's that for Knitpicks. YayThem!

Is it just good luck or what?

Quaker myths...

I just found out about this book, and I am certainly going to read it.

Fit for Freedom, Not for Friendship written by McDaniel and Julye, two Quaker women.

The subject of their book is an examination of attitudes and actual practices amongst Quakers, of two centuries past, regarding the myths of their racial enlightenment, and the actual practice of their stated egalitarian beliefs.

Blood Orange Marmalade

I finally made some more marmalade, but wasn't counting on the blood orange being one I picked out of the basket. But really, it tastes very good in that microwave marmalade recipe; in fact DH said that he was going to eat a half a jar of it tomorrow morning. I laughed, and he said, "Oh, so you think I'm kidding?"

It sure is purdy lookin. And, yes, that is a sweet pickle jar on the right. I don't think it's sweet smelling lid will hurt the marmalade one bit.

The next thing to try is a little crystallized ginger in the chop. I did use food processor but some of the skins had to be hand sliced. They got away from the uber grater disc. This is three oranges, 2 and 3/4th cup of sugar and cooked in the biggest pyrex bowl for 8 and 1/2 mins on high in my nuker. One stirring session.

This made the two jars and it looked like it would fill three, but it filled just the two- in case you were wondering out there about the amounts etc. Have fun! Any citrus can be done but keep to smaller amounts, or regrets, or just about anything can set in.

New Bird Cam added in side bar..

I looked in at about 2 am Minnesota time and didn't see anything, but this might not be an infra-red equipped camera. There are lots of other wonderful educational things around the site, it's a great site. Go have a look, and be sure to look in on the Osprey cam, Estonian (Klaara's) Owl Cam, and the Perigrine Falcom cam. It's Spring!

Oh, I meant to say that the little bird calling on the outside video of the tortoises was a lesser goldfinch male, who is in complete breeding plumage. Beautiful little bird!

I have finished with all the sock yarns, lace weights, and most mohairs, and I'll start on the rest tomorrow. No, I'm not knitting. I need to organize this stash of yarns to know how to plan the knitting. That's not a cop out, though it surely sounds like another of my bad excuses for having nothing to show you, it's the truth. I was starting to buy yarn without knowing what I already had. Not smart!

nighty night! Sweet Dreams!

Breakfast in the Box, Baby Torts for Baby Luann

Rho, this also shows their size, as a quarter is in with them. There are three but the other one, probably Milagro, went off by herself to rest and digest all the flowers, of which she always eats the most. I think I'll change her name to Hoggy.

PS. Obviously I can't hear while operating the camera, and we are still not on the same page about the sex of these little fellows. In truth, the sex if these little creatures can't be determined until the shell starts to reform in the rear half. Lucky our older teenage tort, was about 8 or 9 years old when that happened. Neither of his parents cut him any slack as far as feeding, he had to fight for his bits of corn and bok choy so we just fed him on his own until his mother, the gentler of the two adults allowed him to "dine at her table".

DH puts out food for them in the mornings, weighted down by some old bricks. Churchy, the father, named for Cherchez la femme in the Pogo comic strip but my little five year old sister couldn't wrap her tongue around that first word, it came out Churchy. And, yes, he's about 55 years old, too. We thought older, but we were able to tack an age on him a few years ago after a picture of Churchy and little sister turned up.

Anyway, Churchy is very aggressive toward all other tortoises since he met up with a MONSTER male, who was as big as a turkey platter, at a friend's house. This monster just pushed poor Churchy every which way and flipped him mercilessly. Torta, the little female was oblivious to it all. But Churchy was a little baby when found and he never was, shall we say, properly socialized. So his shock of socialization never left his reptilian mind. He is just a little brute now.

Since DH and I are THE dominant tortoises, we just pick him up and sling him up in the rose bed to cool him off. It's nice and soft up there and he likes to eat the roses anyway.

Well, good night. More stories some other time. There are a few.

Anna's Hummingbird keeps watch...

This little fellow has a lot of concrete to patrol in order to find enough flowers for his daily needs. But, he's scrappy!

Demistifying the Yarn Stash

After being certain that it was time to stop buying sock yarn, I finally got it all organized, I mean that which I could actually FIND.

Now it's all in an album and I'm starting to upload it to the organizer in Ravelry. I knew that there was a reason to join Rav when I first found the feature, but then, the forums started to grab at me with their delicate little fingers. It is so HUGE that you can end up talking much more about knitting than you actually spend time clacking away with the needles.

Anyway, I'm glad of the friends that I've found at KR and now at Ravelry. Who knew there was going to be a madly passionate Birding group? Or a poodles and pets group? Or the Fibro group or the crockpot group? And on and on it goes! Thrifty Knitters? I'm in 40 groups and counting. It's so fun to yak!

Home is still the Knitter's Review, though fewer are posting there I think it's because, well I hope it's because, they are madly passionately knitting, spinning and gardening, since it's Spring again in the northern Hemi. The southern Hemi should all be knitting and spinning, as the garden should be going to sleep Downunder.

I leave you with a little bit of nature.. more to follow tomorrow. Earth Day is actually today, so here's a brave little petunia, trying to make it in an indifferent world full of water shortages after she bloomed where she was planted.

Vimeo .. Lets see how it works!

Jazz was doing so well in August last year, during the kitchen remodel, that he was still playing at 12years, two months of age. He has changed a lot since that time. We hope to keep him comfortable and enjoying his little life and tiny pursuits. He's a wonderful little guy.

Finally, the video of the Torts in the Dry Grass

For Baby Luann

This bit below is a small tutorial on the HOW of doing this.. if there is an easier way, please email me, and no, I don't use anything but Picasa or blogger, I don't care how much easier it is, just because my head will explode if I have to learn a whole new system. Maybe I'll be ready for change in the future but right now my brain is so tight against the sides of my skull, I'm sure anything else to deal with will cause massive damage to my fragile (there is that Italian word again!) existence.

I need a gin and tonic but chocolate will have to do..

How to do this getting a video onto the blog thinga:

1.In Picassa, download the pictures and videos off the camera.

2. Create a MOVIE from the new camera video (it will be a .wmv extension)

3.EXPORT the MOVIE to a file in My Documents or My Pictures.

4. From there go to Blogspot, and UPLOAD the file into a post, using blogspot's Video button on the CREATE a new POST page.

THIS LAST BIT WILL TAKE FOREVER!! YOU MUST LEARN TO JUST DEAL WITH IT!

How to tell what your cat is actually up to....

Earth Day!

And it's a bright, sunshiney day. In the 90s today.. well probaby 88 at the beach. lol

I didn't make it to the park today to support all the people who give so much of their time to this day, but in the past I've volunteered at many a table.

God Bless you all for the wonderful gift of your time - and your blood, sweat, and tears - spent to enlighten and spread the word about our Mother, the Earth.

Sky Watcher's Post

Even when the ugly parking lots and remodels of strip malls confront you, there is the beautiful open sky.. And when clouds abound, there is heart swelling beauty to partake of. Kearny Mesa, last week. I just try to imagine the yellow building and the cherry picker as mushrooms, alien mushrooms.

Followers link.... and adventures with BIOS

I've been trying to figure this gadget out for quite awhile, and finally put one in under my profile.

Happily I have a follower, thanks D., so that part's working. hehe.

I'm still sewing buttons on the red coat, got the green one done. DH and I had a little computer upgrade for more memory (wouldn't it be nice to have something that could implant into a human brain for that?) and some more of something else. I forget right now just what that's called but it speeds things up. I could use an implant for that, too. All of this rejuvenation took place several days ago, and was to speed up the computers for an new game.

Now the fun starts....

I'd never booted up my computer since the change so at 3 am that morning, not being able to sleep, I trotted into what we jokingly call the "Office" to do some stuff, check out bloglists, check forums, you know, the daily general maintenance.

Upon booting up, I was confronted with an unusual boot screen, and it hung there forever. I shut down the CPU, waited, turned it back on and the same old, same old. Figuring it was time to go "pro-active, I hit the escape (flee for your life?) key-

"Oh Bios, Oh!". I thought, "Alrighty, What's this? I have never seen this choice, and it's actually giving me a choice? Oh, what to do what to do?" The curser was inoperable, so, remembering how to get my characters to move around in games, I started pushing the arrow keys-

"Hey, its moving something!"

Finally, I was getting somewhere, and given the choice to save changes or cancel I chose "cancel", getting more worried about all this stuff called BIOS. Uh oh, back to the same screen.

I twiddle with the various ornaments and antennae of my tinfoil hat, sat up straighter in my chair, and peered at the choices. "OK" or "Cancel". Well I already knew the "cancel" thing got me nowhere. So, I clicked "OK".

Somehow this is what it wanted, this bossy BIOS screen, and let me into my "stuff". I worked awhile, shut down the computer and tiptoed off to bed.

The next morning, when I finally woke up very late, I told DH all about the adventure. As his expression showed increasing alarm, I vaguely remember hearing him say, "I'll be right back."

He went in to check on the BIOS. He came back a bit later, being assured that all the settings were fine and the computer was fine. Then he asked me exactly what happened, starting with how I even got into BIOS setting at all?

I said, "well, I pushed ESC because it said to, and the other thing didn't work at all anyway".

He said, "Well it's a good thing!"

I asked him if that would that have made the BIOS disappear? He started laughing.

So I said, "Well, I figured they would have had to make computers pretty idiot proof, or else computers would never had made it THIS far".

He laughed and I laughed, and he kissed me on the forehead and walked out of the room, chuckling to himself. The only thing I knew about BIOS up to that time was that you could "flash it". Sounds sort of Kinky, eh?

One of the coats

The buttons are going on tonight as we watch a video, but this is the finished coat. The hood is generous and almost the size of a Kinsale cloak. The pockets are big for nice warming of mittened hands. It's a very snuggly coat. It's an adaptation of a Saf-T-Pockets long coat, but only one layer of 300 Polartec, which is a lovely soft fabric.

Meanwhile, Right here at Home..

Do we have a dime's worth of difference since the change at the White House, at the V.A. Hospital in Washington, D.C.?

Read THIS and tell me what you think of the respect our government employees of the people.. Remember, It is all our money that pays their salaries! .. have for the things we call civil rights. Things like Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press.

Isn't it odd when they have built private, well paid little feifdoms out of stacks of your greenbacks? You would think they were minor Aristocracy and not just salaried employees of the People, wouldn't you?

We need to let them all know that ALL of us expect something better than this for our hard earned money to go into their hands. Tell them.. it's your bucks!

The other side of Piracy, Somalian Style....

Pirates are bad. They really are but there is not where the story ends. It's where it begins that we should be looking at! Why aren't we ever told anything in this country that comes close to what is really happening to people across the planet?

This is the OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY of Somalia. I am posting this here because I'm sick of the local rag, the San Diego Onion.. ooops, Union, not having the common decency to look at the big picture.

Is everyone who can't defend themselves just supposed to roll over and die, like all others have before them, just because a war they have nothing to do with has impacted their lives unto the death?

I hate this local paper. They have no sense.

Owls again....

I made a button and put them on top, this way it's really easy to find the link.

These owls are fabulous little critters for putting up with that whirring sound over their heads. If I had ears like theirs, I would have smashed the camera by now. But, that's just me.

New Knitpicks Lettuce yarn..

That's about as close as it gets for yarns that are separated by about two and a half years of dye lots, eh? I have laid a strand of the old down between the two new on the new skein, and I cannot pick out any color differences at all, even though sunlight is low all around because of a cloudy day- thus a somewhat lousy picture.

This was a lot more than I ever could have hoped for. Whew! I'll still mix a skein to see exactly where I'm at with this sweater but the worst is over. DH will be able to tell much better than I because he doesn't see colors in green, but rather shades of gray which are much more telling.

Li Young Lee

One of the most beautiful of all the beautiful poems of Li Young Lee is called "The Gift". If you have never read his poetry, you are in for a treat.

The Gift

To pull the metal splinter from my palm
my father recited a story in a low voice.
I watched his lovely face and not the blade.
Before the story ended, he'd removed
the iron sliver I thought I'd die from.

I can't remember the tale,
but hear his voice still, a well
of dark water, a prayer.
And I recall his hands,
two measures of tenderness
he laid against my face,
the flames of discipline
he raised above my head.

Had you entered that afternoon
you would have thought you saw a man
planting something in a boy's palm,
a silver tear, a tiny flame.
Had you followed that boy
you would have arrived here,
where I bend over my wife's right hand.

Look how I shave her thumbnail down
so carefully she feels no pain.
Watch as I lift the splinter out.
I was seven when my father
took my hand like this,
and I did not hold that shard
between my fingers and think,
Metal that will bury me,
christen it Little Assassin,
Ore Going Deep for My Heart.
And I did not lift up my wound and cry,
Death visited here!
I did what a child does
when he's given something to keep.
I kissed my father.

I found this on the web at THIS SITE Some of the other sites that are higher in Google are big ads for junk. As if.....

"The Gift" was also printed in "The Sun Magazine", August 2005 issue, and is part of an interview of the author by Ilya Kaminsky and Katherine Towler entitled, "The Saint, The Murderer, All of It".

Out and about with Jazzie

J just got groomed and looks very fluffy. He also smells just like Cotton Candy. Yum! Check out the Kerchief. The last two nights he has gone into play stance and played. In two more months he will be 13 years old and sure feels his age somedays. That's about 78 years old in human years. He's the best little friend and napping/knitting buddy in the world.

New Header and how it was made...Kudos for creators...

I created the flower background using the Flower Generator developed at procreo.gp at this site:

http://www.procreo.jp/labo/flower_garden.swf

Then I used the tools at Jasc to crop and Picasa3to add the words. It was a lot of fun and I hope you will go see more about what this group is doing to brighten up the web.

Thank you procreo.jp!

Try some fun things with this one. too!

Coral Trees are Blooming In Cali...

This was a sunny and cloudy day, so therefore the white sky. DH and I found these trees blooming away at a location close to the beach.

And this lovely little fun tool I just stole from KR forums.

Flower Generator

Try it, I think you will love it.

I'm awake because I watched and episode of "Speaking Freely' which was an interview of the amazing and prescient Professor Emeritis, Chalmers Johnson. He's someone at whose feet I could sit, contentedly, to learn any way to derail a runaway freight train of short sighted bobble heads who got us into this long term mess. The thing that scared me was that it is very late in the day to save our Democracy, and in gorey detail just why that is so.

The fat and apple cheeked hooligans who have been delivering the news to us in propagandist outbursts have failed us, and we should tar and feather them wherever possible. Look under all the porches, they are hiding out somewhere in middle america where they feel safest.

Klaara the Estonian Owl cam

I finally found a good link to put here, and have put it in the side bar. It's very sweet to watch her feed her owlets.

It's down by fun stuff... go take a peek.. very sweet..

PS. There are snaps of the earlier times on buttons at the bottom of the page.. There was an egg thief! And some other more benign visitors.

Woodly Board

Yes, that's how the manufacturer spelled the word. DH, who still has good knees, kindly put this together this morning. It is an amazing design. It's from Lacis, but I bought it at Overstock.com. SQ, are you smiling?

Real knitting progress here..

These are the correct colors for the yarns I'm using for the squares; that other dark and mysterious rose pink was not. I am half way to the goal of 12 squares. YayMe! And yes, the green is Vanna's choice. It's really rather nice acrylic. I'm not used to knitting with acrylic this soft to the hands. If it doesn't PILL, then well, I might just chug off to sales and get an afghan's worth. Yup!

Obligatory doggie report:

My little dog is bravely hanging in there; he and I spend a lot- LOT!!- of time together. Now that he's agéd, he walks like a rodeo cowboy that just got thrown off a brahma bull- you know, sort of tensed up and slightly bent? He's so cute and tiny that I want to smoosh him when he looks at me with those little "big browns". I do need to go walkabout more again though, so he'll have to adjust. It's not good for me to sit so much. nononono...

Brandy, the rose rescue, got planted, and she is making a brave comeback from her near death experience last summer when it got hot enough outside to bring the poor bugs to a broil if they dared to venture a dash across the rocks. I kid you not, I could hear them making funeral arrangements before they tried it. Such tiny voices.. so sad.

The hummingbirds come down into the water spray now and the scrub jays checked me out to see if I would dig up any grubs for them. I didn't dare even touch the shovel because DH had his beady eye fixed on me from the back slider.

Well, good night and sweet dreams.

Word of warning: Don't be listening to the politicians on TV newscasts before bedtime, either. There is irrefutable, scientific research done at John's Hopkins ( I believe) that doing this will give anyone between the ages of 8 months and 110 years of age lurid, technicolor nightmares! Yes, it is a fact. Google it!

Searching for Answers?

Do you really want to know how we got here without knowing the secret hands that sold our honorable intentions?

This book, and it's companion book, Confessions of An Economic Hitman, all of Susan George's fundamental books,as well as her interviews in "Speaking Freely", and Chalmers Johnson's Trilogy of books in the "American Empire Project" will start you actually knowing what has been happening.

Not only will these books lay it out for you, in a concise and understandable fashion, what was done in your name and with your money-because it was your money - they discuss what can still be done to salvage a workable world from a monumental amount of greed.

Little pink square, Crummy looking heart

I'm working on getting the heart centered and more shapely. My idea is to put a little heart into all the pink squares so that Peace and Love are knitted in together. The green ones, well, I'll have to think of something else. A small frog, an olive leaf?

Oh, the peeps are starting to make calls but there are less of them every year. It's peep season, only just a little bit early. I'll keep you all posted on peeps in between the fire breathing dragon posts.

ETA: I guess the tiny tree frogs aren't called peeps but peepers. Peeps are those marshmallow things! Ooops!

Nighty night.

Ok, I'm going to the side I believe in..

I'm not going to sit on my arse anymore about what is happening and HAS been happening since Obama fell into the foxhole, hopefully not onto someone's bayonet.

This is a quote from an interview that that dangerous wadical wabbit, Mme. Amy Goodman, did with Noam Chomsky, whom we ALL know is a baaadass radical. He's also one of the best analytical minds on the planet, and, happily for those who care, he chose truth as his medium.

....."Now that—side-by-side with that is something else that’s been happening. There is a significant peace movement in Afghanistan. Exactly its scale, we don’t know. But it’s enough so that Pamela Constable of the Washington Post, in a recent article in Afghanistan, argued that when the new American troops come, they’re going to face two enemies: the Taliban and public opinion, meaning the peace movement, whose slogan is “Put down the weapons. And we don’t mind if you’re here, but for aid and development. We don’t want any more fighting.”

In fact, we know from Western-run polls that about 75 percent of Afghans are in favor of negotiations among Afghans. Now, that includes the Taliban, who are Afghans. In fact, it even includes the ones in Pakistan. There’s the difference—the really troubled areas, now, are Pashtun areas, which are split by a British-imposed line, artificial line, called the Durand Line, which was imposed by the British to protect British India, expand it, and they’ve never accepted it. It just cuts their territory in half. Afghanistan, when it was a functioning state, never accepted it, right through the 1970s.* But certainly, the Afghan Taliban are Afghans. And President Karzai, formerly our man, no longer, because he’s getting out of control—

*(Italics are mine, to put it out plainly that it's a mistake to say, as we do here, "Those people have been fighting amongst themselves forever!" I'm sure you've heard that comment, and it's patently unfair)

AMY GOODMAN: How? How is he getting out of control?

NOAM CHOMSKY: Well, interesting ways. When President Obama was elected, Afghan President Karzai sent him a message, which, as far as I know, was unanswered, in which he pleaded with President Obama to stop killing Afghans. He also addressed a UN delegation and told them he wanted a timetable for the removal of foreign forces. Well, his popularity quickly plummeted. He used to be very much praised for his nice clothes and great demeanor and very much admired by the media and commentators. Now he’s sunk very low. He’s suddenly corrupt and so on.

AMY GOODMAN: You mean in the Western world, the Western press?

NOAM CHOMSKY: In the Western world, primarily in the United States, but in the West altogether. And it directly followed these expressions of opinion, which are very likely those of maybe a majority of Afghans, maybe even more.

In fact, he went even further. He said that he would invite Mullah Omar, the head of the Taliban, to Afghanistan to try to work out a solution. And he added, “The United States isn’t going to like this, but they have two choices: they can either accept it, or they can throw me out,” you know. In fact, that’s what they’re doing. There are now plans to replace President Karzai, to sort of push him upstairs and leave him in a—it’s assumed that he’ll win the next election, so put him in a symbolic position and impose, basically, a US-appointed surrogate who will essentially run the country, because that can’t be tolerated."

IF you would like to read the WHOLE interview, go HERE It contains other things you may not like either, but I'm not focused on them.

I'm just so sick to DEATH of the liars, frankly. I want to just skip along looking for butterflies and pretty posies, but life is being lost, and a lot of it is YOUNG life, and I'll just save the gamboling through the tulips for some other time.

Woolyboard arrives and Beastly/Manly debute 2

Posted by Picasa

Actually, the Woolyboard came at least a week ago. I'm behind times here. The Beastly/Manly Aran Sweater- after being ripped back to the GILLS, is now showing some life! It would be nice to get it done in THIS CENTURY since it's an actual gift, i.e., has a body to fit into it.

I won't be blogging, at least not pictures, until the new Specs come from Zenni, which could be awhile. It's very unpleasant to discover that every picture you thought was in focus looks like it was taken through a piece of saran wrap, or maybe through an aquarium full of greenish water.

Time to knit some green and pink squares and snuggle the pup.

PS. Yes, the African violet is sadly neglected. I need to split it and repot the youngins

The public reaction

Wouldn't it be fun to just have some dance-ins? I mean as long as the police didn't go all Freak on us, it would be fun, Eh?

Let' have some serious fun.

J, this really is for sharing....

I'm knitting. Serious knitting. And yes, I'm using acrylic. I'm in an acrylic non wrinkle or shrink mood. Now, Go have some fun. This really didn't have to be a commercial, but it does take organizational powers. Dance ins. Wouldn't those be fun?

I messed up my theme.

And I can’t get the old one back.  Hope this is readable.  Still working on it.  Tried something from the P.C.and that was a  MISTAKE,
